Lara owned a one bedroom condominium in a nice section of town that was attractively landscaped and offered a pool as one of its amenities. A vacancy sign hung on the building. It couldn’t be Lara’s unit yet. The skyrocketing housing costs in Seattle eliminated living affordability for thousands of people who were forced to commute to nearby communities. The upside for residents who had bought their property years ago was a huge increase in their homeowner values. The heirs would benefit by the appreciation because if the residents sold, they’d have to buy new housing at a steep price. Because of Lara’s young age, I didn’t think her condo had appreciated much. It would go to her heirs. Who they were had not yet been determined.
