Several times that day I replayed my meeting with Cole and the thing that stuck out like an oasis in a desert was that opioid users become constipated. Strange how the mind works sometimes. Was it because of the subject matter? Was I like some little kid at school who cracked up when the teacher mentioned the planet Uranus, and joked about it with other kids for months? Or, was it because I have patients who are users and thought I should have known this? Maybe some part of me considered the information relevant to the case. In any event, the fact that opioids contained both heroin and morphine and create havoc with the gastrointestinal system making it difficult to move one’s bowels was a new one on me.
