56 I was upstairs in my office, working on my computer when the doorbell rang. Not wanting to be bothered by a salesperson and wondering who would be calling on me in the evening at dusk, I shuffled over to the window and looked down toward my front stoop. The angle was such that I could never see the person if he were standing close to my door. Only if he backed away ten feet or so could I eyeball him. When he didn’t appear in my vision, I glanced at my drive and in the street for a car that I might identify. The streetlight’s glare would help me see the car, especially one that was familiar. There was no car in sight leading me to assume it was a door-to-door salesperson. I padded back to my desk thinking I could ignore the ring when someone loudly knocked on my door. Noisily, I exhaled
