Chapter 5
Lily had spent the entire day immersing herself in the intricacies of Aiden’s world. His calendar was packed with meetings, business luncheons, and corporate events, each requiring precise planning and execution. Her fingers ached from typing, and her eyes were strained from staring at the computer screen, but she couldn't afford to show any sign of weakness. Not on her first day.
As the afternoon sun dipped behind the city’s skyline, casting long shadows across the floor of Aiden’s office, Lily’s thoughts drifted to Michael’s request. She hadn’t had a moment alone with Aiden yet—no opportunity to begin the task she’d been hired for: uncovering evidence of infidelity. Her stomach churned at the thought. Michael had made it sound so straightforward, but being here, in this sophisticated environment, made everything feel more complicated.
She looked up when the office door swung open. Aiden walked in, his expression unreadable, a thick file in his hand. He placed it on her desk, his eyes briefly meeting hers.
“How are you settling in, Miss Robinson?” he asked, his voice neutral.
Lily straightened in her seat. “I think I’m managing well, Mr. Sinclair. I’ve organized your schedule and have familiarized myself with the ongoing projects.”
He nodded, seemingly satisfied. “That’s good to hear. I need you to prepare for a meeting tomorrow with one of our top clients, Gregory Whitman. He’ll be here at 9 a.m. sharp. Make sure the conference room is set up and have the financial reports ready.”
Lily jotted down the details in her notebook, her mind racing. “I’ll take care of it, Mr. Sinclair. Is there anything else?”
Aiden hesitated for a moment, then his gaze sharpened. “Yes, actually. There’s a charity gala this Friday evening. I’ll need you to accompany me. It’s important for my assistant to understand the social aspects of my business. Are you available?”
Lily blinked, caught off guard. “Yes, of course,” she replied, masking her surprise. She hadn’t expected to be thrust into his social circle so soon.
“Good,” Aiden said, his tone final. “Dress appropriately. It’s a formal event.”
Lily nodded, and Aiden turned to leave, but he paused, glancing over his shoulder. “One more thing. Be careful with Amanda. She can be... ambitious. If she offers advice, take it with caution.”
Before Lily could respond, he was gone, the door clicking shut behind him. She stared at the closed door, his words echoing in her mind. Was Amanda a threat, or was Aiden testing her? She hadn’t missed the undertone in his voice—the suggestion that she might need to choose sides in some unseen battle.
Lily shook her head, pushing the thoughts aside. Her job wasn’t to navigate office politics; it was to do her work and find a way to help Michael. The thought of him sent a pang through her heart. She had to succeed, for his sake and her own.
As the office quieted with the end of the workday, Lily stayed behind, determined to make a good impression. She was sifting through emails when she noticed one marked “URGENT” from Amanda. She opened it hesitantly.

Subject: Tonight’s Event – Attendance Mandatory
Lily,
You are required to attend a business dinner with Aiden tonight. Please be at the Del Mar restaurant by 7 p.m. sharp. This is a last-minute addition to your schedule, but it’s crucial for you to be there. Dress code: business formal.
—Amanda
Lily frowned. Why hadn’t Aiden mentioned this to her directly? The message left no room for questions, only compliance. It was already nearing 6 p.m., leaving her barely any time to get ready. She quickly shut down her computer and gathered her things, a sense of urgency pushing her to move faster.
By the time Lily reached Del Mar, a high-end restaurant known for its exclusivity and panoramic views, her nerves were on edge. She stepped out of the cab, smoothed her dress, and took a deep breath. The valet directed her to a private dining area in the back. As she entered, her eyes immediately found Aiden, who was seated at a table with a group of well-dressed individuals.
Aiden looked up, his eyes locking onto hers. His expression softened for a fleeting moment before he gestured for her to join them. Lily walked over, aware of the curious eyes that followed her.
“Aiden, who is this lovely young lady?” a man asked, his tone jovial but laced with curiosity. He was older, with gray hair and a robust build, clearly comfortable in the setting of power and wealth.
“This is Lily Robinson, my new assistant,” Aiden introduced smoothly. “Lily, meet Gregory Whitman, one of our top clients, and his wife, Marissa.”
Lily extended her hand, offering a polite smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Whitman, Mrs. Whitman.”
“Charmed,” Marissa said, giving Lily a once-over before turning her attention back to the table.
“Please, sit,” Aiden said, pulling out a chair for Lily beside him. She sat down, feeling a mix of relief and discomfort at being so close to him.
As the conversation flowed around her, Lily did her best to keep up, taking mental notes on the topics discussed—investments, mergers, and the latest corporate scandals. She nodded at appropriate times and smiled when necessary, careful to blend in without drawing too much attention to herself.
Halfway through the meal, Lily excused herself to use the restroom. As she made her way down the hall, she heard Amanda’s voice behind her.
“Settling in well, I hope?”
Lily turned, surprised. Amanda stood by the doorway, a glass of wine in hand, looking effortlessly poised.
“Yes, I think so,” Lily said carefully.
Amanda smiled, but there was something unreadable in her expression. “Good. Aiden has high expectations, and this environment… well, it’s not for everyone. But I’m sure you’ll adapt.”
Lily didn’t miss the implication. “I’ll do my best.”
Amanda tilted her head, as if assessing her. “You should,” she said smoothly. “I was in your position once. Aiden values competence, but he doesn’t have patience for mistakes.”
It wasn’t an outright warning, but it left a strange feeling in Lily’s chest.
“I appreciate the advice,” she said, keeping her tone neutral.
Amanda gave a slow, knowing smile. “Of course. We’ll be working closely together, after all.”
With that, she turned and disappeared down the hall, leaving Lily with an odd sense of unease.
As she returned to the table, she met Aiden’s gaze. His eyes searched hers as if he could sense the shift in her mood.
The dinner continued, but Lily’s thoughts remained on Amanda’s words. She wasn’t outright hostile, but something about her felt… off. Not openly scheming, not yet, but definitely someone to watch.
When the evening ended, Aiden stood, offering his hand to help Lily up. “You did well tonight. But remember, trust is earned, not given. This world is full of shadows. Be careful who you trust.”
Lily nodded, her heart pounding.
She was already in too deep to turn back.
