ERIN “Hey, I’m glad I can repay the favor,” Sasha says, as she lays out a blanket and pillow for me on the spare bed. When I arrived at Sasha’s grandparents’ house, I didn’t expect it to be so stately. It’s not that it’s a mansion, but it’s the sprawling acres that impressed me. She described it as a ranch, which made me think of a few tumbleweeds floating by in a dirt backyard. I did not expect horses, sheep, and a chicken coop, against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada’s. I try to hide the pain behind my eyes as I lay my bag on top of the mattress, but I didn’t have anywhere else to go. After I left Jack, I didn’t want to be alone in a hotel room.
