04: Revenge

Kane turned around swiftly like I wasn’t meant to see him in that position. I was curious as I stood up, half scared about what was about to happen. I didn’t do anything bad. But I was watching him when I was meant to be inside, in my room asleep. I watched him closer with a beating heart. After what felt like forever, he turned around and his eyes were back to normal. Under the moonlight, I couldn’t make out his expression clearly. But what I did know was, he wasn’t mad which was a good thing. I stood up quickly on my feet when he came over to me. He looked at me for some time like he was in a deep thought. Opening his mouth to say something, he closed it back and that action made me more worried. Was he going to scold me for watching him? “You shouldn’t be out here. It’s cold,” He said without emotion and I took a moment to recollect my thoughts. Is that concern I hear in his voice? No, I had to be dreaming. “I’m…I’m fine. I’ll go inside soon enough,” I stammered and looked down at my hands when his gaze became too intense. I couldn’t stare into those two deep pools for so long like they wanted to suck me in and swallow me whole. Without saying a word, he walked off and I released the breath I didn’t know I was holding but that was only for a short time as he was back again. But this time, he was holding a jacket. Before I could think what he came back for, he dropped the jacket carefully on my shoulders and walked off again without saying a word. This time, I might have turned into ice. What just happened? Kane dropped a jacket on me. Not just any jacket but his own! I sank back into the jacket and inhaled all of him. My wolf purred in my head. Kane’s smell was heavenly. He smelt of freshly cut grass with a mix of rain and hot chocolate. My mouth watered at his smell. This couldn’t happen. I can’t be craving his smell. Not Kane’s smell of all people. I loved Derek. But Kane was different. I wanted him in a different kind of way. Something I couldn’t explain. And I had no idea how he felt about me. Talking off the jacket as soon as I got into my room, I took a bath and fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. My dreams were filled with images of him. “Wake up! Sleepyhead! You’re here to work not sleep your butt off!” Xena screamed and light flittered into the room, hitting me square on the face and I groaned in displeasure. It’s been three weeks since the last encounter with Kane. And I haven’t seen him since then to return his jacket. Mrs Gertrude told me not to worry as Kane had been so busy these past few days preparing for his alpha swear-in ceremony. “Go away, Zee,” I groaned covering my face with the covers but it was yanked off me in one swoop movement. Xena’s strength couldn’t be matched to mine. And it all has to do with the fact that she is a gamma by blood. “Wake up. We have to prepare you for tomorrow,” she laughed out loud, her joy couldn’t be hidden. “And make that jerk regret hurting you,” her laugh increased and I groaned louder. I wasn’t as enthusiastic about tomorrow as Xena. Tomorrow was Stan’s birthday - Xena’s mate and boyfriend. He would be turning twenty-one. And would be finally called an adult as he would be allowed to attend pack meetings for the grown-ups. However, he wants to celebrate his birthday in a grand style. I sighed as I covered my face with my arms. I hated parties. Especially one that had to do with seeing Derek again after he shattered my heart a month ago. “Can we not do this?” I whined. Xena’s hand resting on my arm and yanking me up was my answer. She ushered me into the bathroom. And after a hot shower. She brought in what I had been dreading; a dress. And a very sluty one at that. Her face was split into two in a grin as she held the deep green dress that matched the color of my eyes. “No.” “Yes,” Xena responded still with a smile and a glint in her eyes, “I mean, no one would be able to take their eyes off you. Especially…” “Derek,” I completed her sentence with a roll of my eyes. Yes, I wanted to make Derek pay for what he did to me. But right now, I doubted I had the mind to do this. To humiliate him when a little part of me still loves him. As stupid as that sounds. Derek is my first. The only person who had cared for me. Even though it was fake. Some part of my heart still couldn’t see some truths. Stupid heart. After so much back and forth with Xena, I finally decided to wear the dress tomorrow. A gasp left my lips when I saw myself in the mirror. Gone was the girl with excess fat on her arms, thighs, and stomach. Instead, a girl with a killer smile, a small waist, and rounded curves looked back at me. “I know right?” Xena cooed from behind me. “It was all worth it,” she said, her voice shaky with emotions. I was emotional too as I took in every detail of the dress. It was a body con dress that accentuated every dip and curve of me. With a low slit that stopped at my mid-thigh. The neckline was lowered to reveal an ample amount of my boobs. I looked like a seductress. But that was the goal. Something I had never felt in my entire life. And had never even dreamed of becoming. “Let’s go show the world that a new Summer has emerged!” Xena yelled with joy of laughter and I joined in, happy for my transformation. Xena taught me how to walk in heels and at the end of the day, I was beyond exhausted. How do girls do it with a huge smile on their faces? I groaned as I applied my makeup. According to Xena, we ought to make a lasting impression. Sadly she had to be there at the party early to help out with decorations. So here I was, stuck with applying makeup on my face with the help of a complicated video on my phone. “s**t!” I cursed loudly when I checked the time. I was two hours late. How did this happen? Hurriedly, I left the house and arrived at the destination in a cab. On getting there, the party was in full swing. And for the first time, I got heads to turn my way. With some boys whistling at me. I bet they didn’t recognize I was the Summer - a bag of dirt. Opening the door, I stopped in shock when everywhere went silent. Not because I looked gorgeous but because I entered through the wrong door. I was supposed to come from the back. But here I was, in front, facing a crowd of people with a beating heart as they stared back at me. Having the mind to turn around and run back the same way I came, I spotted Xena beside Stan giving me a thumbs up and mouthing how beautiful I looked. That regained some of the confidence I lost and I strolled into the room. Soon, the party came to normal with some people giving me second glances. I quietly stayed by the corner of the room ignoring everyone because Xena was too busy with Stan and his family. I understood but when our eyes had met earlier, she looked apologetic. I didn’t mind being alone really. “Hello,” I turned around to see a boy about my age or a year older than me standing before me shyly, rubbing his neck and avoiding eye contact. He looked cute and I instantly liked him. “Hi, I’m Summer. And you are?” I carried on the conversation because he looked too shy to be able to do so. But after a while, he loosened up and I had a great time with him. I learned his name is Aide and he is one of the warriors in the packs. I tried to ignore two certain people. But it was so hard considering the fact that they had been staring at me nonstop since the moment I stepped into the room. One was Derek and the other whose gaze was more intense was Kane. His gaze made goosebumps break out on my skin. What was his problem? His stare was unnerving. I had to switch positions with Aide to avoid looking into his eyes each time I looked up. “Can we talk?” Derek finally came up to me, arrogant as ever with a smirk and some intrigue in his eyes. Aide recognized him at once. “See you later, Summer,” he smiled and walked off leaving just me and Derek.
