10: Heated

Hell yes! It was clearly because of him. Didn’t he know that? He came in here with a whole lot of bad energy. The little comfort I felt in Raphael’s presence disappeared the moment he stepped into the room. I doubted Kane had the slightest idea he was even more scarier when he was pissed. I swallowed, “No,” avoiding his gaze. He made me feel a lot of things at once. But the two I could recognize were fear and pleasure. Fear at his gaze. And pleasure at his gaze. It was confusing how someone could make me feel fear and pleasure at once. “Don’t f*****g lie to me!” He growled and I moved a step back, breathing heavily from my lack of air. I still didn’t dare to take a look at his face for fear that I might regret it. Raphael cut in, “This sounds interesting. And I would love to know what happened between you two last night…” Mrs. Gertrude brought in the food and Raphael stopped to take it from her. She cast me an apologetic look. She too wasn’t immune to Kane’s rage. She once told me to keep my mouth shut whenever Kane was mad. He was barely mad but always cold. However, once he gets mad, he gets irrational at everything. Even logic. She once told me. And it was best to keep a distance. But how could I keep a distance when he was fully concentrating on me? “…but Kane you have to give the girl some slack. You’re scaring her.” “I’m not. She’s just…” Kane stopped and took the plate of eggs from Mrs Gertrude. “Just do whatever pleases you,” Kane hissed took up his plate of eggs and toast, and walked toward the door. I breathed out the air I didn’t know I had been holding. But it wasn’t for long because Kane stopped at the door. “Come with me, Summer. We need to talk.” He walked out without waiting for me to follow him. I closed my eyes, willing myself to stay calm. This was bad. Why did we have to meet when he was in a bad mood? I couldn’t deny that the sound of my name on his lips made my heart flip. Even though he pronounced the sentence like bad news, the sound of my name sounded like spring. Maybe the fear in me made me delusional. “I’m sure he won’t bite,” Raphael filled his mouth with food, “But even if he does, I’m sure it would be nice.” He chuckled at his jokes. Seeing the look of fear and disbelief on my face that he was making a joke at my expense, he shrugged, “Not me. It’s what the ladies say.” I turned around and left not waiting for him to say anything more. I concentrated my eyes on Kane walking furiously in front of me until he entered his room. I tried not to let Rapheal's words get to me but it did. What ladies were he talking about? I thought Kane had a clean slate about women. Who was I even kidding? Kane is a full-blooded man who likes women as much as other men do. I walked in after Kane, opening the door slowly. The room was dark. When I walked in earlier on Raphael, the room had some light. I guess Kane put down the curtains as soon as he returned. I stood at the door after I had closed it. I kept thinking about what kind of trouble I had gotten myself into. Sure I said a lot of bad things. I would take any punishment for what I did. But not losing this job. I couldn’t afford to go back home again. Kane sat on the bed and ate slowly, his jaw set. I could see the tension in his shoulders. He was still mad. However, he appeared madder than before. I gulped nervously as I looked at my feet. Each second felt like I might pass out. I cleared my throat, “you called for me,” I said meekly. He kept eating like he didn’t hear what I was saying. I knew he heard because he stopped for a moment while putting the bacon in his mouth. I bit my lips. It was now or never, “I’m sorry about last night. I didn’t mean any of the words I said…” I stopped to catch my breath because my heart was thundering in my heart. “Especially the part about quitting my job.” Kane scoffed. “It was the alcohol,” I swallowed, almost pleading as my voice took on a sharp edge. Kane wasn’t believing me. Kane suddenly stood up and dropped the empty plate on the table. I realized he was done eating and had time for me. As much as that pleased me that we would soon get this over with, I dreaded it. What was he going to say? “I agree. Whoever you want to spend your life with is none of my business.” He said, his voice devoid of emotions. I wasn’t sure if he meant it or if he meant it as sarcasm. So I kept mute and waited for him to continue. I would agree with anything he says. However, I would fight him on it when it comes to my job. It’s not much but it’s something to me. “And what you said about my other staff. You’re right, I don’t keep an eye on them as much as I do to you.” He stared into me, making my heart lurch, “Do you know why?” “Why?” I mouthed, staring back at him. His gaze was unflinching and he looked so mad. I could tell from the set of his lips and the hardness in his eyes. I just didn’t get it. What I did last night didn’t warrant this kind of behavior. I disrespected him. Yes. But this…
