The first turn of the Midnight Circuit was a sharp, ninety-degree hairpin sandwiched between giant steel shipping containers.
Archer held the inside line, pulling ahead by half a car length as his modified Mustang spat dual bursts of flame from its exhausts. Desperate to assert dominance early, he swung his car drift-wide on purpose, aiming to sandwich my Dodge Demon right into the corrugated metal wall.
"Predictable," I muttered into my helmet microphone.
Instead of stomping on the brakes like he expected, I dropped a gear, kicked the clutch, and ripped the hydraulic handbrake with a sharp snap. The Demon’s rear end swung sideways in a perfect, smoky drift, skimming the rusted steel container with less than an inch of clearance. The sheer rotational speed carried me right through Archer's blind spot, undercutting his rear bumper before he could react.
The crowd gathered along the high catwalks erupted into wild screams, though the sound was instantly swallowed by the supercharger's deafening whine.
In my side mirror, I caught a glimpse of Archer’s face through his open window—twisted in absolute shock as he realized he was suddenly staring at my tail lights.
"She’s floating like a ghost out there!" one of our pit crew radios crackled over my earpiece. Kai’s deep, velvety voice immediately cut through the static, calm and controlled. "Hold your line, Sienna. He’s going to try a desperate move on the dead-man hairpin near the open water."
"Let him try," I replied, my hands relaxed but firm on the leather steering wheel.
The course looped toward the open pier, where missing concrete barricades led directly into fifty feet of dark, freezing ocean water. Rain had made the asphalt slick as glass, but the Demon gripped the ground perfectly under my steady throttle control.
Behind me, Archer was losing his mind. I heard the hiss of his nitrous system before I saw it—a purple cloud of gas shot from his tailpipes as his Mustang catapulted forward at terrifying speed.
BANG!
He slammed his front bumper directly into my rear quarter panel. The Demon lurched violently, the back tires losing traction as the car fishtailed dangerously close to the pier’s unguarded edge.
"Sienna!" Kai’s voice snapped through the comms, a rare edge of raw panic breaking his usual cold composure.
"I've got it!" I gritted out, wrestling the heavy wheel back into center.
Instead of fighting Archer for space, I played into his aggression. I feinted hard to the left, pretending to yield the inside line. Archer took the bait instantly, diving greedily into the narrow gap near the water’s edge.
At the exact second before the apex of the curve, I slammed on the brakes.
The Demon scrubbed off speed instantly. Archer, carrying far too much momentum from his nitrous boost, couldn't make the turn. His eyes went wide with pure terror as his Mustang skidded past me, clipping an iron crane stanchion before spinning completely out of control into the barricades.
CRASH!
Sparks erupted into the night sky as Archer’s car ground to a smoking halt, completely wrecked.
I didn't even slow down to watch. I put my foot down, shifting into fifth gear, and rocketed across the finish line to claim the win.
I brought the Demon to a stop in the central staging area, kicking the driver's door open as the engine died down. The crowd stood in stunned silence. The Northern Council elders looked paralyzed as I pulled off my helmet, letting my long dark hair cascade over my shoulders.
Before I could even take a full step out of the car, a pair of heavy arms wrapped firmly around my waist from behind, lifting me completely off my feet.
Kai pulled me flush against his chest, burying his face into the crook of my neck as he let out a low, rough breath. His heart was hammering wildly against his ribs, his broad hands gripping my waist with a possessive intensity—and I didn't care. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, my adrenaline crashing into a sudden, deep need for his touch.
"You terrifying, beautiful creature," Kai growled against my skin, his deep voice thick with pride and burning desire.
He pulled back just far enough to capture my lips in a fierce, unyielding kiss right in front of the entire circuit. The crowd gasped, but neither of us cared. His hand tangled in my hair, holding me in place as he claimed me completely. The crescent birthmark on my collarbone burned with a blinding heat, sealing our bond in front of every rival family present.
When he finally broke the kiss, his golden eyes were flashing with lethal authority as he looked over my shoulder at Elder Vance.
"The race is over," Kai announced, his voice carrying like thunder across the quiet docks. "The Northern Council belongs to the King Empire now. Clear out... before I execute every last one of you."
Elder Vance turned deathly pale, signaling his remaining men to retreat into the shadows, dragging Archer's unconscious body from the wreckage.
Kai turned his gaze back down to me, a dark smirk touching his lips as he scooped me up into his arms and carried me toward his private SUV.
"Where are we going?" I panted lightly, my hands resting against his broad chest.
"Home," Kai growled softly, his voice dropping into a velvet whisper that sent a thrill straight through my core. "You kept your end of the deal on the track, little sister. Now it's time for me to collect my reward."
