Chapter 18: Marked by the Don

1326 Words
The standoff inside the dimly lit suite stretched thin enough to snap. Red emergency lights bathed the room in long, bloody pulses as rain lashed against the shattered balcony glass. "Take another step, King, and I slit her throat!" Archer shrieked, his manicured hand trembling as he pressed the jagged glass bottle harder against Bella’s neck. Bella sobbed in pure terror, her pale skin dripping with a tiny bead of dark red blood. Two mercenaries raised their suppressed assault rifles, aiming directly at Kai’s broad chest, while the other two moved around his flanks to grab me. Kai didn't blink. He stood like an immovable monolith, his black sidearm trained squarely on the center of Archer’s forehead. "You brought four men into my home, Archer," Kai said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl that resonated through the floorboards. "You should have brought an army." "Grab her!" Archer screamed at his men. The mercenary on the left lunged for my arm. I didn't scream or flinch. The moment his fingers grazed my leather jacket, I ducked beneath his reach, drew the silver-hilted combat blade from my belt, and drove the steel deep into his thigh. The man let out a muffled roar of pain, stumbling backward. BANG! BANG! In the exact same second, Kai fired twice. The gunshot deafened the room. The two mercenaries holding rifles dropped instantly, hit cleanly between the eyes before they could even pull their triggers. The remaining mercenary panicked, swinging his rifle toward me. Kai moved with terrifying, superhuman speed—he stepped into the man's guard, grabbed the barrel of the weapon, smashed it upward, and slammed his heavy elbow directly into the man’s temple. The mercenary collapsed onto the hardwood floor, unconscious. Archer gasped, his face draining of every drop of color as his entire squad was neutralized in under four seconds. "No! Stay back!" Archer screamed, dragging a crying Bella backward toward the open balcony. "Drop the glass, West," I said smoothly, stepping out from behind Kai, my bloody blade gleaming in the red light. Archer looked between Kai's lethal barrel and my unwavering gaze. Realizing he had lost everything, his grip on Bella loosened. Bella seized the split second of distraction—she slammed her elbow into Archer’s ribs and broke free, scrambling across the floor toward the doorway. Archer reached out desperately to grab her, but Kai was already upon him. Kai’s gloved hand shot out, wrapping around Archer’s throat like a vice. He lifted the disgraced heir entirely off his feet, slamming him broadside against the heavy iron railing of the rain-slick balcony. Archer sputtered, kicking his legs uselessly in the air, fifty feet above the jagged stone courtyard below. "Kai... please... we were friends... our families..." "Your family tried to poison me tonight," Kai growled, his golden-amber eyes flaring with a dark, primal rage. "And you threatened the woman I love." Archer’s eyes widened in sheer, horrified shock at Kai’s words. "Say goodbye to Bel-Air, Archer," Kai whispered smoothly into his ear. With a brutal shove, Kai pitched Archer over the iron railing. Archer let out a terrified scream that was swallowed whole by the howling wind and rain before ending in a heavy THUD on the marble courtyard below. Silence descended over the ruined suite, broken only by the sound of heavy rain pouring through the broken glass doors. Bella was trembling in the corner, clutching her bruised neck, staring at Kai in absolute horror. "Marcus," Kai called out without turning around. Marcus and four King enforcers rushed into the room, taking in the scene with trained, expressionless eyes. "Escort Bella to the east wing guest quarters and secure the body in the courtyard," Kai ordered coldly. "The West family is officially extinct. Take control of their remaining assets by sunrise." "Understood, Don," Marcus bowed, gesturing for the guards to help a sobbing Bella out of the room. The heavy double doors closed, leaving Kai and me alone in the blood-stained room. I wiped the edge of my blade against my denim trousers and sheathed it, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs as the adrenaline slowly ebbed away. Kai turned slowly to face me. He stood drenched in rain from the open balcony, his dark shirt clinging to his massive chest, his jaw set like carved granite. The cold, lethal killer who had just wiped out an entire squad vanished the moment his eyes locked onto mine. He walked over to me in three long strides, kicking the fallen weapons out of his path. Before I could speak, his heavy hands came up to frame my face, his thumbs gently wiping away a stray drop of rain from my lips. His chest was heaving, his dark amber eyes searching mine with a raw, agonizing intensity. "Did they touch you?" Kai growled softly, his voice thick and raspy. "Tell me, Sienna... did any of those bastards hurt you?" "No, Kai," I whispered, reaching up to cover his wet, warm hands with mine. "I'm okay. You saved me." Kai let out a low, ragged sigh, closing his eyes for a brief second as if processing pure relief. When he opened them again, the golden rings in his irises burned with an undeniable, consuming fire. "You called me... the woman you love," I breathed out, my heart skipping a beat as I looked directly into his eyes. "I do," Kai confessed softly, his voice dropping into a deep, velvet stroke that sent liquid heat rushing straight down to my toes. "I've loved you since the day you walked back through those iron gates, Sienna. I burned down the West family, I crippled the Council, and I would burn the entire world to the ground if it meant keeping you safe." My breath hitched in my throat. All the fear, the taboo titles, and the doubts evaporated into nothingness under the weight of his absolute declaration. "Then take me away from this room, Kai," I whispered, pulling his head down toward mine. "Claim me. Make me yours." A low, possessive rumble vibrated deep within Kai's broad chest. Without another word, he bent down, hooking his broad arms beneath my knees and scoop me up into his arms. He carried me out of the ruined west wing and down the dark corridor toward his private penthouse suite. He kicked his heavy bedroom doors shut behind us, locking the rest of the dark world outside. He set me down gently on the edge of the massive plush bed, but he didn't step back. He sank to his knees in front of me, his large hands resting firmly on my thighs, looking up at me like a worshiping monarch bowing to his queen. Slowly, deliberately, Kai reached out and unzipped my leather jacket, pushing the dark fabric off my shoulders. His calloused fingers trailed up my throat, stopping gently over the crescent birthmark on my collarbone. The moment his warm skin touched the mark, a blinding, incandescent wave of heat flared through my blood, making me gasp out loud. "You carry the mark of the North," Kai growled darkly, his lips pressing a searing, slow kiss directly over the birthmark. "But tonight... you carry my name." He looked up into my eyes, his golden gaze locked onto mine as he made his final, unyielding vow. "No more secrets, Sienna," Kai whispered possessively, his lips brushing against mine. "You are my Don, my mate, and my wife. From tonight until the day I die... you belong to me." "I am yours, Kai," I breathed, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck and pulling his mouth down to meet mine in an explosive, long-awaited kiss that sealed our fate forever. Next Steps: Chapter 19: Shadows of the Legacy – In the peaceful aftermath of their romantic union, Kai and Sienna uncover a hidden compartment in the penthouse containing Arthur Vance's real diary, revealing a shocking truth about Sienna's true bloodline.
