The finish line was a blur of smoke, burning rubber, and roaring crowds.
Kai had obliterated Archer on the final turn of the tunnel circuit, taking the tight mountain hairpin at two hundred miles per hour without even hitting the brakes. Archer’s Ferrari had spun out into the barrier wall, leaving the West heir disgraced and financially ruined in front of the entire underworld.
By the time we returned to the King Estate, the rain had begun to pour in heavy, freezing sheets over Bel-Air.
I stood in the center of Kai’s private suite, drying my damp hair with a towel while the sound of thunder rattled the tall glass windows. My mind was still spinning from the adrenaline of the race—and from the terrifying way Kai looked at me when he crossed the finish line.
The bathroom door swung open, and Kai stepped out.
He wore only a pair of dark grey sweatpants resting low on his hips, leaving his powerful torso completely bare. Water droplets glistened on his broad shoulders, trickling down the defined ridges of his abs and tracing the edge of his dark wolf tattoo.
My breath caught in my throat. I quickly turned my gaze toward the window, trying to ignore the sudden, intense warmth pooling in my lower belly.
"Marcus locked down the estate," Kai said smoothly, walking over to the bar to pour two glasses of bourbon. "Archer’s father is panicking. They've lost their shipping rights, which means their syndicate allies will turn on them by morning."
"Good," I said, my voice slightly raspy. "He got what he deserved."
Kai walked up behind me, setting a glass on the small table next to me. The heat radiating off his broad chest hit my bare back, making every tiny hair on my arms stand up.
"You were brave tonight," he murmured, his deep voice vibrating right behind my ear.
"I didn't do anything," I replied, turning around slowly to face him.
Big mistake.
Turning around brought me inches from his bare chest. I had to tilt my head back to look into his eyes. The room was illuminated only by the faint golden glow of the fireplace and the periodic flashes of lightning outside.
Kai reached out, taking the towel from my hands and setting it aside. His fingers lingered on my wrist, sliding slowly up my forearm to rest on my shoulder. His skin was warm, clean, and smelled faintly of rain and sandalwood.
"You stayed by my side," Kai said softly, his thumb lightly stroking the bare skin near my collarbone, right over the crescent birthmark. "Most women run from the blood and the noise. You stepped into it."
"I told you... I'm not like other women," I whispered, holding my breath as his gaze dropped down to my mouth.
The silence between us was heavy, charged with months of suppressed desire, taboo tension, and the unspoken bond linking us together. My pulse hammered violently against my ribs. I wanted to push him away, to remind myself of the rules and the danger, but my body refused to move.
"Kai..." I breathed out.
"Say my name like that again," he growled low in his throat, his eyes flashing with a sudden, dark hunger.
His hand moved from my shoulder to the back of my neck, his long fingers tangling into my damp hair as he pulled me flush against his hard body. I gasped, my hands automatically coming up to rest on his bare chest, feeling the heavy, thunderous beat of his heart beneath my palms.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against mine—not quite a kiss, but a slow, agonizing slide of warm skin that made my knees buckle. A soft whimpering sigh escaped my throat, and Kai let out a rough, possessive groan in response.
His grip on my waist tightened, lifting me slightly until my toes barely touched the floor. He deepened the contact, his mouth pressing harder against mine, taking control with a primal hunger that sent liquid fire burning through my veins. It was forbidden, dangerous, and completely intoxicating.
Suddenly, a massive strike of lightning hit nearby, followed by a deafening clap of thunder that shook the entire estate.
The lights in the mansion flickered once, twice, and then vanished completely, plunging the suite into pitch blackness.
A sharp emergency alarm chimed softly in the hallway before dying out as the backup generators failed to kick in instantly.
Kai broke the kiss reluctantly, his forehead resting against mine as both of us panted heavily in the dark. I could feel his hot breath against my wet lips, his body still pinned tightly to mine.
"Generators are down," Kai growled darkly, his voice thick with unfulfilled desire.
"Kai... we shouldn't have done that," I whispered, my heart hammering against my chest as reality crashed back in.
"We haven't done anything yet," Kai murmured into the darkness, his lips brushing the shell of my ear, sending a fresh wave of shivers down my spine. "And the storm isn't over."
He slowly let me down, but didn't release his grip on my waist. Through the dark, I could see the faint, supernatural amber glow of his eyes locking onto mine.
"The security locks are dead until the main power resets," Kai said smoothly, dragging me gently toward his massive king-sized bed. "Which means you aren't leaving this room tonight, Sienna."
"Kai—"
"Save your breath, little sister," he whispered, pulling me down onto the soft mattress beside him and pulling the dark heavy blanket over both of us, wrapping his muscular arm tightly around my waist to hold me against his chest. "You're sleeping right here. Next to me."
