The harsh morning sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting golden rays across the tangled dark sheets of the master bed.
My eyes fluttered open, my body still heavy with exhaustion. I moved to shift, only to realize I couldn't. A heavy, muscular arm was wrapped securely around my waist, pinning me flush against a warm, solid wall of chest.
Kai was still asleep—or so I thought.
His face was buried in the crook of my neck, his hot breath fanning across my collarbone with every slow rise and fall of his chest. His bare leg was tangled over mine, holding me completely captive. The intense, forbidden intimacy of waking up in his arms made my heart skip a beat, a sudden wave of heat rushing straight to my face.
I held my breath, slowly trying to slide his hand off my waist.
"Try moving again," Kai’s deep, gravelly morning voice rumbled directly against my neck, "and I’ll drag you right back under the blanket."
I froze, feeling his arm tighten, pulling my hips an inch closer. I could feel every line of his sculpted torso pressing against my back, his skin hot to the touch.
"Kai, let go," I whispered, my voice raspy. "It's morning. The power is back on."
"I don't care about the power," he murmured softly. He turned his head slightly, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin beneath my ear, pulling a tiny, involuntary gasp from my throat. "You slept well, Sienna. You didn't toss and turn once."
"That's because you held me so tight I couldn't breathe," I shot back, turning my head to glare at him.
Big mistake.
Kai opened his eyes. His dark brown irises were flecked with bright, amber rings in the morning light. His hair was messy, hanging over his forehead, making him look dangerously handsome and dangerously relaxed. He didn't look like the cold Don who had ruined the West family last night; he looked like a predator waking up next to his chosen prize.
"You like it when I hold you," Kai whispered, his thumb lightly stroking the bare skin of my hip where my silk shorts ended. "Your body doesn't lie to me, little sister."
Before I could retort, the heavy double doors of the suite were suddenly slammed open without warning.
"Kai! What is the meaning of this absolute madness?!"
The shrill, outraged voice of my stepmother, Victoria King, echoed through the grand bedroom.
I gasped in horror, my blood running cold as I scrambled backward, trying to pull the heavy duvet up over my shoulders. But Kai didn't flinch. He slowly sat up, completely unbothered by his lack of a shirt, resting one arm casually over his knee as he glared at his stepmother.
Victoria stood at the entrance, dressed in an expensive white tweed suit, holding a crocodile-skin handbag. Beside her stood my stepsister, Bella, whose eyes were wide with pure shock and venom as she took in the sight of me lying in Kai’s bed.
"You..." Bella shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at me. "You disgusting little slut! I knew it! You came back here to steal everything!"
"Watch your tongue, Bella," Kai growled, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that instantly silenced the room. The relaxed morning air vanished, replaced by an icy, suffocating pressure.
Victoria stepped further into the room, her face pale with fury. "Kai! Have you lost your mind?! Archer West’s father called me at dawn screaming! You destroyed their family’s shipping company last night! You ruined our alliance with the West family! And now... now I find you sleeping in the same bed with her?!"
"The West alliance was toxic," Kai said smoothly, throwing off the blanket and swinging his bare feet onto the floor. He stood up in his dark grey sweatpants, his towering frame instantly dominating the room. The morning sun illuminated the broad expanse of his back and the intricate ink of his wolf tattoo.
"They dared to raise a weapon against this house," Kai continued, walking slowly toward Victoria and Bella. "They dared to use Sienna’s name to play games in my city. So I broke them."
"She is your step-sister!" Victoria hissed, casting a disgusted look toward me. "The press will tear this family apart if they find out! Your father left me in charge of the household affairs, Kai! I demand that you kick Sienna out of this mansion immediately!"
A terrifying, quiet laughter rumbled in Kai’s chest.
He stopped a foot away from Victoria, looking down at her with absolute, undisputed dominance.
"Demand?" Kai repeated, his amber eyes flashing brightly. "You seem to forget who built the wealth you use to buy your clothes, Victoria. My father may have given you a ring, but I own every brick, every contract, and every life in this empire."
Victoria swallowed hard, taking an involuntary step back under the weight of his Primal aura.
"Sienna isn't going anywhere," Kai declared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings like a decree from a king. "She stays in this house. She eats at my table. And if you or Bella ever raise your voice at her again..."
He stepped closer, his shadow completely swallowing Victoria.
"...I will cut off your allowance, freeze your accounts, and throw you out onto the street with nothing but the clothes on your back. Do I make myself clear?"
Bella gasped in horror, clutching her mother’s arm. Victoria’s jaw trembled with rage, but she knew better than to push Kai when his eyes turned amber. She knew he wasn't making empty threats.
"You're making a huge mistake, Kai," Victoria whispered bitterly, turning on her heel. "Her father’s bloodline brings nothing but death and ruin. Mark my words... she will destroy you."
Victoria grabbed Bella’s wrist and hurried out of the suite, slamming the doors behind them.
Silence descended over the bedroom once more.
I sat frozen on the bed, clutching the duvet to my chest, my mind reeling from Kai’s ruthless defense of me. I looked at him as he stood near the doors, his shoulders tense, his chest rising and falling heavily.
"Kai..." I murmured softly.
Kai turned around slowly. The anger in his face softened as his gaze locked onto mine. He walked back to the bed, leaning down until his broad hands rested on the mattress on either side of my knees, trapping me once again.
"You didn't have to do that," I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "She's right... people will talk."
"Let them talk," Kai growled, reaching out to gently tuck a strand of dark hair behind my ear. His fingers lingered on my cheek, warm and possessive. "No one touches you in this house, Sienna. Not Archer, not your stepmother, and not your past."
"Why are you doing all this for me?" I asked, looking deep into his golden eyes, searching for answers. "What do you really want from me?"
Kai leaned in close, his lips brushing against my temple, his rough whisper making my skin ignite with a burning fire.
"I want everything, Sienna," he whispered darkly. "And I always get what I want."
