Chapter 9: Under the King’s Thumb

"You are not leaving this estate without Marcus," Kai said, his tone leaving zero room for negotiation. He stood in front of the grand mirror in his dressing room, casually adjusting the platinum cufflinks of his black suit jacket. I stood near the door, my arms crossed tightly over my chest, wearing a fitted crimson blazer and black trousers. "I’m meeting Chloe at a public café downtown," I said, stepping into his space. "I don't need a six-foot-four mob enforcer standing over my shoulder while I drink tea." Kai stopped adjusting his cuff and turned to face me. He didn't say a word at first; he simply took two broad strides until he was towering over me, forcing me to tilt my chin up to look at him. The scent of dark leather, rain, and cedarwood washed over me, instantly setting my skin on fire. "The West family lost their shipping routes last night, Sienna," Kai murmured, leaning down until his lips hovered inches from my ear. His hot breath sent a shiver straight down my spine. "Archer is desperate, and his father is bloodthirsty. You step outside these gates alone, and you become leverage." "I can protect myself," I insisted, though my heart was hammering violently against my ribs from his proximity. "I know you can fight," Kai growled softly, his hand reaching out to lightly trace the line of my collarbone, his fingers lingering just over the crescent birthmark beneath my blazer. His touch was warm, possessive, and agonizingly slow. "But you're under my protection now. Which means your life belongs to me. You don't take risks with what's mine." My breath hitched. "I don't belong to you, Kai." "Keep telling yourself that, little sister," he whispered, a dangerous, arrogant smirk touching his lips as his eyes dropped to my mouth for a brief, electric second. He stepped back, slipping his hands into his pant pockets. "Marcus waits outside in the SUV. Have your tea with Chloe. But if you try to slip away from him..." He paused, his golden eyes flashing with a dark promise. "...I will hunt you down myself." Twenty minutes later, I was sitting at a corner table in an upscale coffee shop in downtown Bel-Air. Marcus stood outside near the glass entrance, his sharp eyes scanning the street, looking every bit like a high-level bodyguard. "Girl, the s****l tension between you two could literally cut through steel," Chloe whispered, leaning across the marble table with wide eyes. "He literally assigned a mafia lieutenant to watch you get coffee!" "It's not funny, Chlo," I said, taking a sip of my iced latte to cool the heat still lingering on my skin from Kai’s touch. "He's completely possessive. He acts like he owns every breath I take." "And yet, your face gets all flushed every time you say his name," Chloe teased, raising an eyebrow. "Admission time, Sienna. He defended you against Archer, destroyed the West syndicate in a street race, and put your stepmother in her place. He’s dangerous, but he’s utterly obsessed with you." "He's my stepbrother," I said, though the word felt completely hollow. "Non-biological," Chloe reminded me instantly, tapping her long manicured nails on the table. "Besides, we have bigger problems than your hot, mafia-boss stepbrother. Look at this." Chloe pulled a thick, faded leather envelope from her designer tote bag and slid it across the table toward me. "What is this?" I asked, my brow furrowing as I opened the wax seal. "After the gala, I had my family’s private investigators dig into your father’s old records before his death," Chloe explained, her voice dropping into a serious whisper. "Your mother told everyone your dad was just a failed corporate CEO who lost everything in a market crash. But these are the original deeds to the Northern Territory." I pulled out a piece of yellowed parchment. At the bottom was an official stamp bearing the exact same symbol as my birthmark—a crest featuring a crescent moon surrounded by thorns. "Your father wasn't just a businessman, Sienna," Chloe whispered, leaning in closer. "He was the supreme leader of the Northern Pack Syndicate. And when he died, his bloodline rights didn't vanish—they were hidden. The crescent mark on your collarbone isn't just a birthmark. It’s a physical blood-key to the vault holding the Northern territories." My blood ran cold. The sudden realization hit me like a physical blow. The spark. Every time Kai touched the birthmark, that intense wave of heat flared between us. He didn't just feel an attraction to me—his Primal instincts recognized what I was. "Who took over the Northern territories after my father died?" I asked, my fingers trembling slightly against the parchment. "The West family took the land," Chloe said grimly. "But to claim total ownership of the vault, they need the bloodline heir. They need you. Archer didn't just try to get back with you because you got hot over the summer, Sienna. His family wants your blood." Before I could process her words, the glass door of the coffee shop burst open. Marcus didn't even have time to draw his weapon. Three heavy smoke canisters crashed through the front windows, filling the café with thick, blinding white gas. Screams echoed as patrons scrambled for the exits. "Sienna! Cover your face!" Chloe yelled, coughing violently as the gas filled the air. I threw myself out of my chair, grabbing my bag, but a heavy hand grabbed my wrist through the thick smoke. I instinctively ducked, throwing a sharp back-elbow into my attacker's ribs. He grunted, but another man grabbed my other arm, pinning me against the wall. "Got the girl! Move!" a rough voice shouted through a gas mask. I kicked hard, driving my heel into the second man's knee. He buckled with a roar of pain, letting go, but a third operative stepped up behind me, pressing a wet cloth over my nose and mouth. The sharp, chemical scent of chloroform filled my lungs. My vision began to blur instantly. My knees turned to water as my strength vanished. Through the haze of fainting consciousness, I heard the sound of heavy gunfire shattering the front windows—followed by a roar of absolute fury that could only belong to one man. "Get your hands off her!" Kai's voice boomed through the fog like thunder. Through my closing eyelids, I saw Kai burst through the smoke like an unleashed demon. He grabbed the man holding me by the throat, lifting him off his feet and slamming him brutally into the concrete wall. As I slipped into complete darkness, strong, warm arms caught me before I hit the ground, pulling my limp body flush against a broad, roaring chest. "I've got you, Sienna," Kai’s deep, furious voice echoed in my ear. "I've got you." Next Steps: Chapter 10: The Uninvited Shadow – Sienna wakes up locked inside Kai's private penthouse room for her safety, leading to an intense confrontation where the truth about her bloodline is brought to light.
