Chapter 10: The Uninvited Shadow

The heavy, metallic scent of leather and rain was the first thing that greeted my senses as consciousness slowly bled back into my body. I opened my eyes to find myself lying on the silk sheets of Kai’s king-sized bed. The chemical taste of chloroform still lingered at the back of my throat, making my head throb with a dull ache. I sat up abruptly, gasping for air, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Don't move too fast," a deep, velvet voice growled from the corner of the room. Kai was standing near the fireplace, his black dress shirt unbuttoned to his mid-chest, rolling up his sleeves. His knuckles were bruised, covered in fresh, dark blood that didn't belong to him. The golden rings in his dark eyes flared with an intense, lingering fury that made the air in the room feel dangerously cold. "Kai..." I rasped out, rubbing my temples. "Chloe... is Chloe okay?" "Your friend is fine," Kai said, walking slowly toward the bed. Every stride he took was loaded with heavy, predatory intent. "Marcus got her out safely. The three men who put their hands on you, however, are currently at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean." I swallowed hard, pulling my knees up to my chest. "It was the West family, wasn't it?" Kai stopped at the edge of the mattress, towering over me. He didn't answer right away. Instead, he reached out, his long fingers cupping my jaw, tilting my face up so I was forced to look into his dark, storm-filled eyes. His thumb brushed over my lower lip, warm and possessive. "I told you not to leave without proper security," Kai murmured softly, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. "I told you what would happen if you put yourself in danger." "They used tear gas, Kai! Marcus was overwhelmed!" I shot back, my stubborn pride rising despite my trembling pulse. "And besides, I found out why they're coming after me!" Kai’s hand shifted from my jaw to the nape of my neck, his fingers tangling into my hair, pulling my head back slightly. He leaned down until his breath washed hot across my lips. "You think I don't know about the Northern Territory deeds?" Kai whispered, his eyes dipping down to the crescent birthmark glowing faint pink beneath my collarbone. "You think I didn't know your father was the Alpha of the Northern Pack?" My breath hitched in my throat. My eyes widened in shock. "You... you knew?" "I've known since the day your mother brought you into this house," Kai growled, his body leaning over mine, pinning me against the headboard. "Your mother made a deal with my father to hide you. The West family murdered your father to steal his land, but without your blood, the vault remains sealed." "So you kept me here as a secret weapon?" I gasped out, anger flaring through the haze in my head. I brought my hands up, pressing against his bare, hard chest to push him away. "Is that what this is? You're just protecting an asset for your syndicate?" Kai let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated straight through my palms. Before I could react, he grabbed both of my wrists, pinning them easily above my head against the plush headboard with one broad hand. His heavy frame moved between my knees, trapping me completely under his weight. The sheer physical dominance and sudden proximity sent a blinding shockwave of heat straight down my lower belly. "You think you're just an asset to me, Sienna?" Kai purred darkly, leaning in until his lips brushed against the shell of my ear. "Let go of me, Kai!" I breathed out, my chest heaving against his. "Look at me," he commanded softly. I glared up at him, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps. Kai leaned down, his lips trailing a burning path down my jawline, stopping right over the sensitive skin of my collarbone. He pressed his lips gently against the crescent birthmark. The moment his skin touched the mark, that familiar, searing electric jolt shot through my entire nervous system. A soft gasp escaped my lips as my back arched off the bed, my body reacting instantly to the Primal bond linking us together. Kai groaned low in his throat, his dark eyes flashing pure amber as he pulled back just an inch, his gaze locked onto my flushed face and trembling lips. "An asset doesn't make my blood burn like this," Kai whispered, his dark voice thick with unspoken desire. "An asset doesn't make me want to tear this city apart piece by piece just because another man looked at her." He released my wrists, but I didn't pull my hands away. Instead, my fingers instinctively gripped the edges of his unbuttoned shirt, my body aching for the warmth pressing down on me. "This is wrong, Kai..." I whispered, though my voice carried zero conviction. "We're bound by family..." "We're bound by blood and instinct, Sienna," Kai growled, his broad hand sliding down my side, cupping my hip firmly through my clothes, pulling me flush against his hard frame. "And no contract or fake family title is going to stop me from taking what's mine." He lowered his head, his mouth claiming mine in a slow, possessive kiss that wiped every coherent thought from my brain. It wasn't gentle—it was demanding, intoxicating, and filled with months of built-up, forbidden hunger. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs as I kissed him back, tangling my fingers into his dark, soft hair. Suddenly, the lock on the heavy suite door clicked loudly, followed by the soft beep of an electronic master keycard. Kai broke the kiss reluctantly, his forehead resting against mine as both of us panted heavily, our lips slick and swollen. He turned his head slowly toward the doorway, his eyes narrowing into deadly slits. The door swung open, and Marcus stepped into the foyer, holding a bloody tactical radio. "Don," Marcus said, stopping dead in his tracks as he saw Kai hovering over me on the bed. Marcus immediately averted his eyes, his voice tight with urgency. "Forgive the interruption, but we have a major breach. The shadows outside the estate... it’s not just the West family anymore." Kai slowly sat up, though his hand remained firmly planted on my hip, keeping me close to his side. "Speak, Marcus." "The Council of Alphas from the Northern Territory just crossed the state line," Marcus reported grimly. "They know Sienna is awake. And they’re demanding she be handed over to face trial for her father's alleged treason... or they declare total war on the King Empire by midnight." Next Steps: Chapter 11: Whispers of the Past – The Council of Alphas arrives at the estate, forcing Sienna and Kai to put on a united front, while the stepmother tries to strike a deal to sell Sienna out.
