The clock on the mantelpiece chimed eleven times. One hour until the midnight deadline.
Outside, rain hammered against the floor-to-ceiling glass of Kai’s private armory. Guns were being loaded on the lower floors, and security barriers were locking down the entire perimeter, but inside the soundproofed room, the silence was suffocating.
I stood near the central display case, watching Kai strap a tactical shoulder holster over his black henley shirt. The broad expanse of his back muscles flexed under the dark fabric, the outline of his wolf tattoo dark and lethal against his skin.
"You called me a mate in front of the elders," I said softly, breaking the quiet. "You turned an economic dispute into a blood war."
Kai stopped adjusting his weapon. He turned around slowly, his heavy tactical boots silent on the dark hardwood floor.
"I told them the truth, Sienna," he said, walking toward me with that unhurried, predatory stride. "The Council doesn't want peace. They want your bloodline key. If I hadn't claimed you under my total authority, they would have used legal loopholes to drag you to the Northern Territory tonight."
"And what happens after midnight?" I asked, stepping toward him, my hands clenching into fists at my sides. "When their armories march on your gates? You're risking your syndicate, your men, and your father’s legacy for me."
"I don't care about the Council, and I don't care about my father's legacy," Kai growled darkly, stopping so close I had to tilt my chin up to meet his gaze. The intense heat radiating off his body enveloped me like a physical force. "I only care about what’s inside these walls. What belongs to me."
"I am not a piece of land to be owned, Kai," I whispered, though my voice trembled as his thumb reached out, lightly tracing the side of my neck, stopping over my rapid pulse point.
"You're not land," Kai murmured, his voice lowering into a rough, velvet stroke that sent liquid fire rushing down my spine. "You're the only thing in this miserable city that keeps me human. You think I didn't see you at the gala? You think I didn't notice the way you looked at me when you stepped out of that car?"
My breath hitched in my throat. "Kai..."
"You came back here for revenge against Archer and your stepmother," Kai continued, his fingers tangling firmly into the hair at the back of my head, pulling me flush against his hard chest. My hands automatically rested against his broad torso, feeling the deep, steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath my palms. "But you stayed because of me."
"That's crazy..." I gasped out, though my eyes dropped to his lips.
"Is it?" Kai whispered possessively. He leaned down, his mouth brushing against my lower lip—a tantalizing, excruciating touch that made my knees buckle. "Prove it, then. Tell me to step aside. Tell me to hand you over to Elder Vance right now, and I’ll open the gates."
The silence between us stretched tight enough to snap. I stared into his golden-amber eyes, searching for a lie, but found only raw, terrifying sincerity. He meant every word. He would burn his entire kingdom to the ground if I asked him to—or if I tried to leave him.
"I don't want to go with them," I whispered, my fingers tightening on his shirt, pulling him an inch closer.
A low, dark rumble vibrated in Kai’s chest. "Then make a deal with me, Sienna."
"What deal?"
"When the clock strikes midnight and I break the Council's forces..." Kai breathed against my wet lips, his broad hand sliding down my spine to pull my hips firmly against his, leaving zero space between us, "...you stop running from me. No more excuses about our step-family title. No more pretending you don't feel this."
His lips pressed gently over the crescent mark on my collarbone, and that sharp, electrifying spark shot straight through my blood, making me let out a soft, shuddering sigh against his neck.
"Say yes, Sienna," Kai growled softly into my skin, his grip on my waist tightening with absolute dominance. "Give me your vow, and I will tear the Northern Territory apart for you."
"Yes," I breathed out, the word escaping my lips before my logic could stop it. "Yes, Kai."
A dangerous, triumphant smirk touched his lips. He pulled back just far enough to look into my eyes, his amber gaze glowing brightly in the dim light of the armory.
"Good girl," he whispered softly.
BOOM!
A thunderous explosion rocked the eastern wall of the estate grounds, shattering glass downstairs as the sirens began to blare in short, sharp bursts. The midnight siege had begun.
Kai didn't flinch. He slowly reached into his holster, drawing his sleek black sidearm, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Stay behind Marcus in the secure vault," Kai commanded, his tone shifting back into the cold, ruthless Alpha Don of the city.
"I'm fighting with you," I said firmly, reaching to the table behind me and pulling out a silver-hilted combat blade. "You said it yourself—I carry Northern blood. I'm not hiding in a vault while you fight my father's killers."
Kai stared at me for a long, heavy second, taking in my fierce posture and the stubborn spark in my eyes. A slow, proud smile spread across his dark features.
"Then stay at my back, little sister," Kai growled, his voice laced with lethal excitement as he opened the heavy reinforced armory doors. "Let's go show the Council why this territory belongs to us."
