Chapter 13: The Midnight Circuit

1609 Words
The siege at the estate was repelled within forty-five minutes, but the Northern Council hadn't retreated—they had regrouped in the gut of the city: the Midnight Circuit, an industrial dockland converted into a illegal, high-stakes underground racing arena. Thick exhaust fumes, screeching tires, and neon LED lights cut through the heavy midnight fog. Hundreds of syndicate members, rogue racers, and bookies crowded the concrete barriers, screaming as modified muscle cars burned rubber on the makeshift track. I stood beside Kai near his matte-black Dodge Demon. I had traded my bloody blazer for a sleek black leather racing jacket and fitted denim. Behind us, Marcus and six heavily armed King enforcers stood guard, their hands resting near their concealed sidearms. Across the staging grid stood Archer West, accompanied by Elder Vance and a dozen Northern enforcers. Archer looked battered from his previous losses, but a sneering, arrogant grin was back on his face. "You brought a girl to a territory war, King?" Elder Vance called out, his voice amplified over the roar of idling V8 engines. "The Council rules state that contested territorial borders must be settled on the Circuit if the defending Don accepts the challenge! You lose this race, and Sienna's bloodline rights belong to us!" "And if I win," Kai said smoothly, stepping forward as his massive frame cast a dark shadow over the staging area, "the Northern Council dissolves its claim on her forever, and the West family surrenders their remaining shipping docks." "Agreed," Archer sneered, stepping up to a souped-up twin-turbo Mustang. "You might be a terror in a dark alley, Kai, but you can't drive for s**t on this technical track. I've owned these docks for three years." Kai smiled—a slow, lethal expression that sent a cold shiver down my spine. "I know I can't." He turned toward me, reaching out to slide his hand around the back of my waist, pulling me flush against his side in front of the entire crowd. The heat of his body burned through my leather jacket as his dark, amber-flecked eyes locked onto mine. "That's why she's driving," Kai announced calmly. Mutterings and gasps echoed through the gathered crowd. Archer burst into a loud, mocking laugh. "Her? You're putting your entire syndicate's fate in the hands of a little girl who spent the last three years in boarding school?" I didn't answer Archer. Instead, I looked up at Kai, my heart pounding against my ribs—not from fear, but from an electric rush of adrenaline. "You sure about this, Don?" I asked under my breath, a small, dangerous smile touching my lips. Kai leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear as his fingers dug possessively into my hip. "Show them who taught you how to drive when you were sixteen, little sister. Burn them alive." I pulled my dark helmet over my head, stepped away from his grip, and opened the driver’s side door of the matte-black Demon. What Archer and the Council didn't know was that before my father died, he ran the Northern logistics routes. I didn't just learn how to drive—I was raised on high-speed mountain passes and illegal sprint circuits. I strapped myself into the five-point harness, flipped the ignition switches, and brought the supercharged engine to a roaring, deafening scream. Through the tinted windshield, I saw Kai standing on the sidelines, his arms crossed over his broad chest, his golden eyes fixed entirely on me with absolute, unwavering trust. A heavily tattooed flag girl stepped into the center of the grid, raising two glowing green flares. Archer revved his Mustang beside me, gloating through his open window. "Last chance to back out, Sienna! I'll go easy on you if you come back to my bed!" I didn't even turn my head. I jammed the shifter into gear, held the launch control button, and brought the RPMs to the redline. 3... 2... 1... DOWN! The green flares dropped. Tires shrieked, burning rubber fills the air as both cars shot forward like missiles into the pitch-black industrial maze. Chapter 14: Burning the Grid Word Count: ~1,200 words The first turn was a sharp, ninety-degree hairpin surrounded by steel shipping containers. Archer had the inside line, taking the lead by half a car length, his Mustang spitting flames from its dual exhausts. He intentionally drifted wide, trying to force my Dodge Demon into the corrugated metal walls. "Predictable," I muttered inside my helmet. Instead of braking, I stomped on the clutch, ripped the hydraulic handbrake, and kicked the tail of the Demon out. The car swung sideways, skimming the steel container with less than an inch of clearance. The sheer force of the drift carried me right through Archer's blind spot, cutting cleanly under his rear bumper as we shot onto the main straightaway. The crowd gathered along the upper catwalks went wild, their screams muffled by the deafening roar of my supercharger. In the rearview mirror, I saw Archer’s face twist in pure shock as he realized he was suddenly staring at my taillights. "She's a ghost!" one of the pit crew radios crackled over my earpiece—Kai’s voice coming through low, dark, and smooth. "Keep your line, Sienna. He's going to try to ram you on the hairpin near the docks." "Let him try," I replied, my voice steady as ice. The track looped toward the open pier, where missing concrete barriers led straight into fifty feet of dark, freezing ocean water. The rain made the asphalt slick as oil, but the Demon gripped the surface as if it were on rails. Behind me, Archer was desperate. He flipped a toggle switch on his dash—a purple cloud of nitrous oxide shot from his tailpipes, catapulting his Mustang forward at terrifying speed. He slammed his front bumper directly into my rear quarter panel. BANG! The Demon lurched violently, the back tires losing traction as the car fishtailed dangerously close to the edge of the dark pier. "Sienna!" Kai’s voice snapped through the comms, a rare edge of raw panic breaking his cold composure. "I have it!" I gritted out, wrestling the heavy steering wheel with everything I had. I didn't try to pull away from Archer. Instead, I feinted to the left, pretending to yield the inside line. Archer swallowed the bait, diving hard into the narrow gap near the edge of the pier. At the exact second before the apex of the dead-man curve, I slammed on the brakes. The Demon scrubbed off speed instantly. Archer, carrying too much momentum from his nitrous boost, couldn't make the turn. His eyes went wide with sheer terror as his Mustang skidded completely past me, clipping the iron crane stanchion and spinning violently out of control before slamming broadside into the concrete barricade. CRASH! Sparks erupted into the night sky as Archer’s car ground to a smoking halt, completely wrecked. I didn't even slow down to watch. I put my foot down, shifting into fifth gear, and rocketed across the finish line, leaving a cloud of tire smoke and absolute silence in my wake. I pulled the Demon into the central staging area, kicking the door open as the engine idle died down. The crowd was frozen in disbelief. The Northern Council elders stood paralyzed as I removed my helmet, letting my long dark hair fall over my shoulders. Before anyone could say a word, a heavy pair of arms wrapped around my waist from behind, lifting me straight out of the car. Kai pulled me flush against his chest, his head burying into the crook of my neck as he let out a low, rough exhale. His heart was hammering wildly against his ribs, his broad hands gripping my hips so tightly it bordered on painful—but I didn't care. I wrapped my arms around his neck, my adrenaline crashing into a sudden, overwhelming need for his touch. "You terrifying, beautiful creature," Kai growled against my skin, his deep voice thick with unbridled pride and burning desire. He pulled back just enough to capture my mouth in a fierce, possessive kiss right in the middle of the crowded circuit. The crowd gasped, but neither of us cared. His tongue slid past my lips, claiming me completely as his fingers tangled into my hair. The crescent mark on my collarbone burned with a blinding, incandescent heat, sealing our unyielding bond in front of the entire syndicate. When he finally broke the kiss, his golden eyes were flashing with dangerous intent as he looked over my shoulder at Elder Vance. "The race is over," Kai announced, his voice carrying like thunder across the silent docks. "The Northern Council belongs to the King Empire now. Clear out... before I execute every last one of you." Elder Vance turned pale, signaling his men to retreat into the shadows, dragging Archer's unconscious body from the wrecked Mustang. Kai turned his gaze back down to me, a dark smirk spreading across his lips as he scooped me up into his arms, carrying me toward his private SUV. "Where are we going?" I asked, panted lightly as my hands rested against his broad chest. "Home," Kai growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, velvet whisper that sent a thrill straight through my core. "You kept your end of the deal on the track, little sister. Now it's time for me to collect my reward." Next Steps: Chapter 14: Claiming the Throne – Back at the penthouse, the adrenaline from the race turns into an intense, long-awaited romantic encounter, but a sudden message from Sienna's late father changes everything.
