Chapter 10 - Going Home

Chapter 10 Going Home "Please wake up, Bree." I opened my eyes to see Kayla hovering over me, inches from my face. I could tell she had been crying, even though it was dark. The light of the moon lit up her wet face. "Shh, it's okay hun. What's wrong?" I asked, pulling her to lay at my side. "I had a bad dream. The big owls came and ate my legs off so I couldn't walk and then they pecked out my eyes." She started sobbing again, crying into my arms. "It's okay." I cooed, rocking her slightly. Even though we weren't very close she was still my sister. I loved her, and it hurt to see her upset. After about twenty minutes, she stopped crying and fell asleep, so I slipped out of bed. Even though it was only six I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep. Once I was up, I was up. I wandered into the kitchen, sitting down in a stool to think. My thoughts wondered to six hours previously when I kissed Anthony. The easiest solution was to say it meant nothing and I felt nothing, but that was a lie. When I kissed him I was so happy I could fly, and I wanted to do it again. I knew I liked him, maybe even loved him, but that was crazy. I had known him for less than a week, and that was because I hit him with my car! But what did he feel? To him I was probably the crazy girl who hit him with her car, that's what I would always be. No guy had never shown an interest in me, that's why I had never had a boyfriend. That and the always present threat of heartbreak. They always thought of me as one of the guys, which, in a way, I was. I used to dress like a boy, and I even played football. Needless to say, they didn't see me in the 'I want to tap that' way. Even I was okay with that until I met Anthony. Honestly, it kinda scared me that he swept me off my feet the way he did. Just looking into his eyes made me nervous. Logistically, what did I expect to happen? I was in high school for christ's sake! He lived far away, or so he made it seem, so any kind of relationship would be impossible. If I was smart, which I had already proven I wasn't, I would have stopped seeing him before things got too far. Now, I was way too emotionally invested in him for this to end painlessly. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Not being able to take any more of my painful thoughts, I stood to cook. Breakfast sounded good, so I decided to make pancakes and eggs. I found the needed ingredients and tossed them into the bowl, stirring until smooth. When the pan was heated I poured three little round circles and left them to set. When the eggs were in the pan I went back to my pancakes to flip them. Thirty minutes later, I had a large plate of pancakes, a huge bowl of eggs, several pieces of cinnamon-sugar toast, and three oranges on a try. Carefully I took them into the living room, setting them on the coffee table. I checked one last time to make sure I had everything before walking back into the kitchen to get drinks. "What smells so good?" I gasped, dropping the cup that was in my hand. "Oh, Anthony, you scared me." "Sorry." He said, looking at the ground. Great, this was awkward. "Um...I made breakfast, could you wake up Kayla for me?" "I actually wanted to talk to you." He said, sitting down at the table. I nodded, taking the seat across from him. My heart had already sped up, and he hadn't even said anything! "About last night..." "Look, I know. It shouldn't have happened, we've known each other for less than a week, we were tired, it was a dare, I get it. Trust me, I felt nothing either, it's already forgotten." I looked up at him to see his reaction. He looked slightly shocked and somewhat hurt, but he nodded. "I'll wake up Kayla." He said, walking out of the room. I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. What had I done? How would I have lied to him?! I felt terrible, to say the least. Slowly I grabbed three cups and a carton of orange juice, heading into the living room. "Morning, Bree!" Kayla exclaimed, wrapping her arms around my legs. "Morning kiddo, you hungry?" I smiled, pouring a cup of orange juice. She nodded eagerly, stuffing her mouth with toast. Breakfast was weird and silent, almost like I was eating with strangers. I kept stealing sideways glances of Anthony, and he looked angry. His jaw was set and he had his fork grasped rightly in his fist. "What are we doing today?" Kayla asked as I put the dishes in the sink. I shrugged, turning the water back to hot. I swear I was going to go crazy if I stayed in there for much longer, it was so boring! Luckily Anthony came to my rescue. "Hey guys, I can get the door open. You can go home."
