Unseen Choices
Madison lay awake in her room, staring at the ceiling as the events of the evening replayed in her mind. Ethan’s words lingered with her, a curious mix of hope and skepticism. She turned on her side, trying to shake the unease that refused to leave her.
The next morning, the Smith estate was buzzing with activity. Madison’s stepmother, Veronica, was already orchestrating plans for the wedding with the precision of a general preparing for battle. The staff moved with purpose, each person carrying out Veronica’s instructions to the letter.
"Madison, darling!" Veronica called, her voice echoing through the hallway as she entered Madison's room without knocking.
"We have so much to do before the wedding. You'll need to go for a fitting in two days time."Madison sat up in bed, her sleep-deprived eyes meeting Veronica's.
"A fitting? Already?"Veronica’s smile was tight, her eyes sharp. "Of course! We can’t waste any time. The Browns have high standards, and we must meet them, so clear your schedule before hand"
Madison felt a surge of frustration but held her tongue. Arguing with Veronica was like talking to a wall—futile and exhausting. Instead, she nodded, feigning compliance.
"Fine." Madison whispered under her breath.
As Veronica left the room, Madison let out a sigh of exasperation. Her life had been completely upended, her choices stripped away. Yet, despite everything, a part of her was curious about Ethan. He was an enigma, and she couldn’t deny the strange pull she felt towards him.
Later that day, Madison found herself sitting in the back of a sleek black car, headed to an upscale restaurant in the city. Her father had arranged for her to have lunch with Ethan—a chance for them to get to know each other away from the prying eyes of their families. The car pulled up to the restaurant, and Madison stepped out, her heart pounding with anticipation and nerves. She smoothed her dress and took a deep breath before entering.
Ethan was already seated at a table near the window, looking out at the bustling street below. He turned as she approached, standing to greet her with a warm smile.
"Madison,"
he said, pulling out a chair for her. "I’m glad you could make it."Madison returned his smile, taking her seat.
"Thanks. I appreciate the invitation."
The waiter arrived, and they ordered their meals, exchanging polite conversation as they waited. Madison studied Ethan, trying to gauge the man beneath the polished exterior.
"You seem different from what I expected," Madison admitted, breaking the silence that had settled between them.Ethan raised an eyebrow, his expression amused.
"Different? How so?"Madison hesitated, choosing her words carefully.
"I heard a lot of rumors about you—that you’re cold, distant. But you’ve been…surprisingly approachable."Ethan chuckled, a hint of self-deprecation in his smile.
"I suppose I’ve cultivated that image over the years. It helps in business, but I can see how it might not be ideal in personal matters."Madison nodded, her curiosity piqued.
"So, why did you agree to this marriage?"Ethan’s gaze shifted, his eyes thoughtful.
"It’s not just about business, although that’s a significant part of it. I believe in fulfilling my responsibilities to my family, and this marriage is part of that."Madison watched him closely, searching for any signs of insincerity.
"And what about your personal feelings? Do they matter in all of this?"Ethan met her gaze directly, his expression earnest. "They matter more than you might think. That’s why I wanted to meet you, to see if there’s something here worth exploring."Madison felt a flicker of hope at his words, a possibility she hadn’t dared to consider.
"And do you think there is?"Ethan smiled, a genuine expression that softened his features. "I’d like to find out."
Their conversation continued, the initial awkwardness giving way to a more natural rhythm. Madison found herself drawn to Ethan’s intelligence and humor, the walls between them slowly crumbling. As they finished their meal, Ethan glanced at his watch, his expression apologetic.
"I have a meeting to attend, but I’d like to see you again soon. Perhaps we could have dinner tomorrow?"Madison hesitated, the memory of the mysterious message warning her about Ethan lingering in her mind. But she pushed the doubt aside, focusing on the man before her.
"I’d like that."Ethan nodded, a satisfied glint in his eyes.
"Great. I’ll have my assistant, Davies, coordinate with you."As they left the restaurant, Ethan walked her to the waiting car, his presence reassuring.
"Thank you for today, Madison. It was…enlightening."Madison smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest.
"It was for me, too."As the car pulled away, Madison watched Ethan’s figure recede into the distance, a mix of emotions swirling within her. There was still so much she didn’t know about him, but for the first time, she felt a sense of possibility—a chance for something more than the life she had been resigned to.
Back at the estate, Madison returned to her room, her mind buzzing with thoughts of Ethan. She knew the path ahead was fraught with challenges, but a newfound determination took root within her.For better or worse, she would face this marriage on her terms, uncovering the truth about Ethan and the man he truly was.And perhaps, just perhaps, she might find happiness along the way.
