Emerald woke up startled as a result of a nightmare she had. She got up, took her bath, and got ready for work. For the past two weeks, she had been careful as a result of her encounter with Jason.
She moved to the bus station and joined the usual crowd that gathered every Monday morning.
"Emerald, we meet again," Jason said, startling her.
"Hey, Jason," she replied. "Never knew we'd meet like this," she added.
"Well, I knew," he said, smirking.
"Jason, you and I know that the contract between our parents was a mistake," she said.
"Yes, I know," Jason said, moving closer to her as she took a step back. "Your mother gave birth to a goddess, so how can I think of a contract?"
Jason moved closer to her step by step as she moved backward. She stopped moving as her back hit a short, leafless tree, stopping their movement.
Jason leaned forward, his lips almost touching hers. "You know our parents made a future for both of us, so why should we change it?" Jason said, leaning more closely as she felt his breath on her lips. He was taller than her.
The signboard behind her was taller than her too.
Emerald was almost giving up until she heard the sound of the bus."horn"
"Yeah, our parents wrote a future but it's wrong. I love someone else," Emerald said and hit the hem of her bag on his face, leaving a scar there.
She rushed into the bus expecting a chase, but she got a scar instead as he made a signal to his men not to chase.
**JIEC Company**
Emerald walked into JIEC, which in full means Jason Insurance and Entertainment Corporate. She had written a letter and had passed the online interview to be the security secretary of the CEO of the company.
Emerald walked towards the elevator, responding to unfinished greetings.
"Wow, she's beautiful."
"Is she new here?"
"She's gorgeous."
Those words were echoing behind her as she walked elegantly into the elevator, not minding the words of the other three people in the elevator with her.
"Hi," one greeted.
"Hey," she replied.
"Are you new here?"
"Yep. I am the new secretary of the CEO," she replied.
"Be careful with him. He's such a dangerous person," the lady asking her said. "So many people had been fired. Some don't even last a week before being sacked, and we will never hear anything about them."
The elevator opened, showing a lady wearing six-inch heels and a white top with an ankle-long skirt.
She walked into the elevator and offered Emerald a handshake, which she gladly took. Then she smiled sincerely at Emerald, ignoring the group greeting from the lady with Emerald.
"I am Lynda. The CEO's younger sister, to be precise," Lynda said.
"Emerald. Emerald Blake. New secretary," she replied.
"You are pretty," Lynda said.
"Thanks," Emerald said.
"My brother might be a jinx, but I am sure he will take it easy on you," Lynda said, smiling.
The elevator dinged as the three ladies rushed out. "So we are left then," Lynda said.
"Why?" Emerald nodded.
They were silent in the elevator until the elevator dinged at the floor.
"Yeah, let me show you the way," Lynda said, gesturing with her hand.
"Thanks."
They walked into the CEO office. The CEO was seated facing the mural-like glass wall showing the sight of the city.
"Brother!" Lynda called as the CEO turned his chair to face them.
"Jason!" Emerald called in total shock.
"Hi, Emerald Blake," he said.
***CEO Jason***
"Jason!" Emerald called in total shock. "Hi, Emerald Blake."
"You both know each other?" Lynda asked, looking from Emerald to Jason, asking for an explanation.
"Yeah. My bride," Jason said after a few seconds of silence.
"Hey, what the heck?" Emerald yelled, annoyed at his explanation. "How could I ever be your bride?"
"The contract is being signed, Emerald," Jason said, looking up at her.
"Oh, then I don't wanna work in this goddamn company anymore!" she said, annoyed, walking away.
"That's why we have problems with contracts," Jason said softly.
Emerald stopped and turned. "Meaning?"
"The contract you signed... you didn't read it. It says you are unable to quit for twenty-four months without pay if you want to resign," he replied.
"I didn't— Oh, this is crazy! You resume work today. Lynda, show her to her office."
"Let's go," Lynda said. "Is this how crazy it is?" Emerald asked.
"Yeah, sometimes," Lynda replied.
"I heard that," Jason yelled.
"I heard that," Emerald mimicked. "that too!""
"Here is your office," Lynda said when they got to an office not far from Jason's, persistently close.
Inside Emerald's office, her office was wide with an extra-long sofa placed in it. From the direction her table faced, she could see Jason clearly and see exactly whatever he was doing.
"This office is really nice," she said, facing Lynda.
"My brother had it refurnished because he was worried," Lynda said, and they both laughed.
"I'll be on my way home," Lynda said, moving towards the exit.
"Wait, so far?" Emerald called.
"I just came to make sure my brother doesn't sack the new secretary on her first day at work," Lynda replied without looking back till she was out of sight.
Emerald paused.
"Pass me the files on the Xavier's company project," Jason said, scribbling something on his table.
"You can always do that on your own, boss," she replied.
"Now you are my secretary and it's your job," Jason countered.
"Oh yeah? Then sack me," Emerald shot back, moving to her own office.
"You are one hell of a lady," Jason sighed and continued working.
