Jenine's POV
“Mum?” I called softly as my eyes opened, the pitch blackness hitting me in the face as I stared up the ceiling.
It was all a dream. I sat up as the tears welled up in my eyes. My blurry eyes adjusted, looking around the faintly lit room.
I had seen my mum in my dream, wearing her favourite dress—the pink and white flower patterned dress she loved to wear to the park—a bright light haloing her as her laughter echoed, filling me with nostalgia.
Her lips moved as she said something, smiling at me. And then suddenly, the bright light had gone and a pitch darkness took over.
I found myself falling through the dark void, my screams piercing through the darkness, my arms and legs flailing wildly.
And then I saw her—a woman. A foreboding aura hung around her.
Her eyes sparkled as she walked towards me, arms outstretched, muttering some words I couldn't understand.
I scurried to my feet. I tried to shrink away from her touch but my body remained rooted to the spot. My eyes closed on their own accord as my mouth opened to scream but no sound came out.
I felt a soft, familiar hand slip into my palm pulling me to my feet. I opened my eyes to see my mum and Dew smiling down at me, their eyes sparkling.
“She's the one?” a voice echoed, making me look around. I tried to find where it came from but to no avail. I saw my mum and Dew nod and look at each other, a knowing look on their faces.
“She's the chosen one,” the voice echoed again.
“Chosen to do what?” I remember asking.
“You'll find out soon enough, Jen,” Dew had replied, her hand slipping out my palm as she disappeared into thin air.
I tried to hold on tightly onto my mum's hand but it slipped out of my hand too.
“Be strong Jenine,” her voice echoed, her frame blending into the light. “This is just the beginning.”
The beginning of what? And that was when I woke up.
The tears streamed down my cheeks as a wave of emotions hit me making me realize how much I missed her.
“I miss you, mum,” my body jerked as I sobbed. “I miss you so much.”
The bed sheets soaked up my tears as I sniffled trying to get myself together. I wiped the tears off the corners of my eyes with the edge of my dress as I got down from the bed. My feet shuffled as I walked to the kitchen, my head swooning a little as I staggered.
I ran the water down in the sink, onto my hands. The cold liquid caressed my face as I washed. I felt a pair of eyes watching me as I poured the water on my face. I turned speedily towards the kitchen windows, the water from my face dripping to the floor. Nothing.
I pinched myself to make sure this wasn't one of those dreams—I’ve forgotten what they’re called—where you woke up only to realize you were in another one.
I saw it as I started walking out the kitchen and towards my room. It came as a flash. I looked at the window again. Nothing.
I sighed heavily as I turned off the light, making my way back to the room.
A lump formed in my throat as I saw it again and this time, clearly. A figure—the woman I had seen in my dream—staring blankly at me through the window making my heart race. The fear rooted my feet to the spot. I couldn't bring myself to scream as she faded away into the night.
