I Found Him

Ferguson's POV Something was off about her. The girl we had found in the woods. I didn't know exactly what it was but I could feel it in my bones. “Karl,” I called through the mind link. “Any news?” “No, Alpha.” He had offered to go back out alone. Our search had been cut short by some twist of fate. Sometimes I wondered if being the Alpha was worth it. I had lost a lot. I had lost my Luna, my mate. I couldn't lose my son too. He knew that. I'd check in with him again in the morning. For now, I needed rest. The sunlight seeped through the curtains playing on my face. I could feel its warmth on my body. I shuffled out of bed. An extra hour was spent in the bathroom freshening up. I didn't need to look like my problems. “Alpha,” the pack guards greeted me as I walked past them. I walked to the clinic. The room where the injured girl had been the night before was empty. “Where's Martha?” I asked the young she-wolf that greeted me. “She went for ward visits. She'll be back soon.” “Inform her that her Alpha is here.” I didn't like being kept waiting. It tested my patience, something I didn't have in abundance. Especially not right now. I knew some wolves in the pack—if not most of them—thought I was too brazen. Someone needed to be if things were going to get done around here. I saw Martha waddle quickly towards me. About time. “Where is she?” I asked, ignoring her curtsy. “I moved her somewhere else, Alpha.” “Can she talk now?” She nodded. Good. I'd see her then. We walked past beds with sick wolves on them, my eyes flicking around. Thanks to the Goddess, we weren't at war with any enemy packs and there were no gruesome, life-threatening wounds. We'd enjoyed over nine years of peace now thanks to the alliance made by all the Alphas in Lupestone and its environs. But now, the peace was being threatened and in no little way. Martha pushed a door at the far end of the clinic open. The girl was on the bed, a hot cup of coffee pressed against her lips. “Alpha,” she whispered, her coffee spluttering a little as she scrambled to stand. “Stay put. There's no need for that.” Her wounds were fully healed now. She had a strong wolf. Impressive. “Laura. That's your name?” She nodded, her hands wrapped around the steaming cup. “What happened to you?” I saw her flinch. “I… I can't remember everything. Jenine… she would.” “Jenine is the friend who brought you in?” She nodded again. That odd young she-wolf. There was something about her—an aura that I couldn't place a finger on. Unnerving. The last person I had gotten this kind of aura around had been Adira, the Luna who left Lupestone. She could be dead for all I knew. I mindlinked a warrior to bring her in. She walked in through the door, her eyes scared. “Laura,” her eyes lit up like candles. “You're okay.” Her friend let out a weak smile. I let them catch up. They needed it. “Ahem,” I cleared my throat after some time. Time to get this whole lot done with. “Now tell me what happened.” I saw them exchange glances. “Speak. Now.” My patience was waning. I had important matters to attend to. I listened as they stuttered through their story. From what I gathered from everything they said, it was the Triad. Striking at poor, defenseless girls in the woods. Their actions were an act of war and needed to be addressed immediately. Their nuisance had lingered for far too long. “Rest up. Both of you,” I walked to the door. “You can leave later during the day.” I gave orders to the omegas. They were to be fed before leaving. It was the least I could do. I needed to speak to Zonda. A lot of things were terribly wrong. Things that I couldn't comprehend. I sighed as I turned my doorknob. “Ferguson!” a voice filtered in through the mind link, trembling with excitement. It was Karl. “I found him. I FOUND LUCA!”
