The First Shift

Laura's POV “Hold yourself together, Jenine,” I whispered, tightening my grip on her arm. I wasn't going to let her do this. I had watched her every move since she got in here with Elisha. You can't blame me. I didn't trust the son of a b***h. “Laura,” she grunted my name again as she struggled to break free. “Come with me,” I said in a taut voice, dragging her along with me. It didn't matter that she was struggling. I was stronger, she had no wolf. At least for now. I looked at her through the corners of my eyes. She was definitely moving like a she-wolf in heat—a wolf that had found her mate. I could scent all the lust on her and I could feel her body—warm, throbbing—as I held onto her arm tightly pulling her towards the exit. The cold, chilly air hit our faces, cutting through our skins like daggers as Jenine growled softly, pulling me back as the moon shone on her skin. When did it get so cold? “Dear Goddess,” I whispered, my eyes glancing round. The wolves that stood guard watched us suspiciously. “Everything alright there?” one of them hollered, walking towards us. “Yeah, everything's fine,” I shouted back. “She just had a bad dinner.” I eased my hand around Jenine's waist, pushing her forward. “Come on, don't stop here now,” I whispered. The guard stopped walking, looked us over, and deciding we weren't worth his time, he walked away. I dragged Jenine with me deeper into the woods. There was no time to get the car and even if there was, I don't think I would have taken up that option. I was sure Jenine was shifting for the first time and so far, I've been getting too much resistance from her. Her wolf was going to be a stubborn one and I couldn't risk her ripping my car seats to shreds or worse still, ripping my head off my neck when I'm driving. Our feet trashed through the grassy and leaf-littered floor of the woods, the cold icy air from Jenine's mouth hanging briefly in the air before dispersing as she panted, her eyes dilated. With a sudden burst of strength, she yanked her arm away from my hand falling to the ground as she did. I stepped back watching her. It wasn't a very good idea to go near a wolf shifting for the first time. Who knows what they'd do to you? “Jenine?” I whispered as she crouched on the floor, her breathing getting heavier as she panted. Her fingers curled around the grasses, grasping them tightly as they folded into fists, a low guttural growl reverberating in her throat. I saw her arms get taut as her body quivered, her back hunching. I had only blinked when I heard the tearing sound of fabric. It all happened too fast. Unlike the other wolves in the rink that had shifted little by little, Jenine 's wolf didn't seem to have the patience. Rooaaarrrr! The sound echoed in the silence that hung all over the woods—loud and spine-tingling. My eyes darted around cautiously. I didn't want the pack guards coming here. We were well deep into the woods and hopefully out of earshot. Jenine's wolf panted as she sniffled, her lips curling back revealing her new set of dentition. And for the first time in my life, my heart pounded very fast at the sight of a wolf. A newly shifted wolf. Even my breathing exercises did nothing to help me as I tried to keep my racing heart in check, my fingers quivering as I wrung them. Her wolf turned to me and my heart dropped heavily, skipping a beat. She was in every way marvelous. Her fur was white as snow with black patches around her wrists, close to her paws on all four feet and at the tip of her tail. Her honey-coloured eyes burned into mine as I stood still, not knowing what to do. Her lips parted as a low growl rumbled in her throat. At that instant, my wolf whined inside me restlessly. “Easy there, girl,” I willed her to calm down. Her whimpering increased as I tried to talk to her calmly. “What's the matter, Aurora?” My eyes glanced at Jenine's wolf, catching her eyes briefly before looking away, my body getting agitated. Why wouldn't she calm down? Why wouldn't my wolf calm down? Aurora had never disobeyed me before. Why now? I looked up to see Jenine's wolf still staring at me as she growled. There was something different about her. Her eyes seemed to glow brighter every passing second. My eyes stared at her curiously as my wolf got more restless. “Aurora, no!” I grunted, my voice cold and hard as she threatened to break free. The white wolf in front of me seemed to have a grip on her for the more she growled, the more my wolf whined. Her growls got louder and I felt my wolf finally breaking free, my clothes tearing to shreds. “Aurora?” I was hurt that my wolf had not listened to me. I tried to shift back, to get her to let me take back control but she didn't let me. Jenine's wolf had stopped growling now. She stood there, her eyes blazing on me. I felt powerless. Her head raised to the sky as she howled loudly, the beams of the moon shining in scattered patterns on her beautiful fur. Suddenly and without warning, she bolted off like lightning, moving faster than I'd ever seen any wolf run. My wolf, much against my will, bolted after her blindly like a pup running after its mother. This wasn't natural. There had to be an explanation for it. Aurora had never done anything I hadn't approved of since she and I became one. She would never disobey me. What could make her do this? Make her break her loyalty to her master. To me. “Jenine has a lot of explaining to do when we shift back,” I noted in my mind as the cold air brushed Aurora’s fur. “If we shift back.”
