Chapter 4

Ava's heart wasn't stable for a while as she stared at Lilith, her mind trying to process the woman's cryptic words. The shadows in the pier seemed to close in around them, Ava took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. She had come this far, and turning back now was not an option. "What do you mean by 'the key'?" Ava asked, her voice firm despite the nervous energy coursing through her. Lilith's eyes glinted in the dim light, a small smile playing at the corners of her lips. "You have the courage and determination to dig where others fear to tread. But more importantly, you possess something that the prophecy foretold." Ava's brow furrowed in confusion. "Prophecy? What prophecy?" She asked feigning ignorance. Lilith stepped closer, her presence, alluring and intimidating. "There is an ancient prophecy that speaks of a great imbalance between our world and the human one. It foretells the rise of a Seeker, someone who would uncover the truth and have the power to either restore balance or tip it further into chaos." Ava felt a chill run down her spine. The pieces of the puzzle were starting to fit together, but the picture they formed was both daunting and terrifying. "And you think I'm this Seeker?" Lilith nodded. "Yes. Your involvement in the disappearances and your tenacity in pursuing the truth are not mere coincidences. You were chosen by fate." Ava swallowed hard, the weight of Lilith's words settling on her. She had always been driven by a sense of justice, a need to uncover the truth no matter the cost. But this... this was something far greater than she had ever imagined. "What do I need to do?" Ava asked, looking well organised despite the fear gnawing at her. Lilith's smile widened, "You need to continue your investigation, but be cautious. There are those who will stop at nothing to keep the prophecy from being fulfilled. Trust no one completely, not even those who seem to be allies." Ava nodded,"How do I know I can trust you?" Lilith's expression turned serious. "You don't. But ask yourself this, why would I come to you if I had anything to gain from your failure? My interests align with yours, for now." Ava hesitated, then nodded. "Alright. What do you know about the disappearances?" Lilith's eyes flickered with a hint of sadness. "They are being taken by Viktor's followers, used in dark rituals to strengthen his power. He seeks to exploit the prophecy for his own gain, to bring about a new era where the supernatural reigns supreme." Ava's heart clenched at the thought of the missing people being subjected to such horrors. "We have to stop him." Lilith nodded. "We will. But for now, gather your information and stay safe. I will contact you when the time is right." Ava watched as Lilith melted back into the shadows, her words echoing in Ava's mind. She had a mission, one that she must overcome soon no matter the cost. Meanwhile, Alexei sat in his office, . He was deep in thought, the weight of the prophecy and the threat Viktor posed pressing heavily on him. Nikolai had promised to look into Ava's connections, but Alexei knew time was running out. Elena knocked softly on the door before entering. "Mr. Petrov, Nikolai is on the line." Alexei picked up the phone, his voice tense. "Nikolai, what do you have for me?" Nikolai's voice was steady, but there was an edge of concern in his voice making it sound a little bit off. "Ava Collins is digging deep, Alexei. She's been in contact with someone named Lilith. My sources tell me this Lilith is not to be trusted. She's been involved in some of the darker circles of our world." "Lilith... I've heard of her. She could be playing both sides." "Exactly," Nikolai replied. "Be careful. Ava is walking into a web of deceit, and if she's the Seeker like I heard, she could be in more danger than she realizes." Alexei's mind raced. "I need to find her before Viktor does. Can you arrange a meeting?" "I'll do what I can," Nikolai said. "But tread lightly, Alexei. The balance is precarious, and any misstep could have dire consequences." Alexei hung up, his mind set. He needed to find Ava and protect her, not just because of the prophecy, but because she was a courageous soul caught in a dangerous game. He couldn't let her fall victim to Viktor's plans. *** Ava returned to her apartment, her thoughts filled with doubt immediately she heard the information. She had never imagined her investigation would lead to such a profound and dangerous truth. She needed to compile her notes and figure out her next steps. She sat down beside her laptop, a notification immediately popped up from her screen, It was an email from an unknown sender. She hesitated for a moment before opening it. "Ava, meet me at the old library at midnight. Come alone. - A friend" She was confused and bothered for a sec, her heart skipping a beat. Another lead, but what if it was a trap? She had no choice but to follow it. She couldn't afford to let any opportunity slip through her fingers. She grabbed her bag, checking to make sure she had her camera and notepad. She slipped a small pocketknife into her jacket pocket, a precaution she hoped she wouldn't need to use. The old library was a relic of the past, its grand architecture now overshadowed by modern buildings. It was a place of knowledge and secrets, fitting for the clandestine meeting she was about to have. She entered the dimly lit building, she looked both her right and left ways to check whether she wasn't followed. . "You're brave, coming here alone," Alexei said, his voice deep and resonant.
