The arrows fell like silver rain. I didn’t even think. “Kael!” I screamed. Time seemed to splinter apart. Kael's muscles were tense, his claws were out, and he was half-shifted, but in that one frozen moment, I saw his eyes. Wide. Terrified. Not for himself, but for me. “No!” I shouted. I surged and put myself in front of the arrows. He yelled behind me and grabbed my waist to try to pull me back. But I pushed him away with all my might. I could see silver shining. I got ready for the pain. But it didn’t come. A wall of fur and muscle hit me on the side and knocked me to the ground. Kael. He had pushed me out of the way. We hit the ground so violently that my teeth shook. Kael rolled on top of me and used his body to protect me as the arrows hit the ground all around us.
