Chapter 4 - Will

956 Words
Two weeks later. The party room is being set up for the second biggest party of the year, the future Betas 18th birthday party. The biggest party will be for my 18th in three weeks time. ‘Just far enough away for us to recover from this one.’ I think to myself. The party isn’t for two days but the room is already full of banners and streamers. A DJ booth is currently being erected next to the dance floor complete with strobe lights and a smoke machine. “It’s looking good.” I say to Brody playfully ruffling his hair. We may be almost adults but we can still goof around with each other like we used to do when we were kids, and I know messing his hair up is a huge no go and will definitely get me a reaction. As I expected I get an elbow to the chest as he carefully straightens out his hair. “You are so vain.” I tease, but it’s true, he is the vainest wolf I know, and he is always checking his hair is perfect. “You are just jealous your hair never looks this good.” He says ruffling my hair to get me back but to be honest he is right, and it does little to mess up my already messy hair. I shoulder barge him anyway and we jostle around barging each other until we hear footsteps behind us and we turn to look for the source. Beth is standing in the doorway smiling with a suitcase behind her. She leaves the suitcase in the doorway and walks towards us, her heeled boots clunking as she walks on the hard wooden dance floor. “I’m going to miss you so much.” She says hugging her twin. “No you’re not. You will have a great time and be far too busy to miss any of us.” Brody replies. “Where are you going?” I ask. I didn’t know she was going anywhere. No one has told me anything about her leaving the pack. In fact no one has said anything about Beth to me in two weeks, they probably haven’t dared to bring it up. I haven’t spoken to Beth myself at all in the last two weeks either. Every time I walk in to a room where she is, she walks out. If I’m in a room and she walks in and sees me, she suddenly turns around and leaves. Today is the first time I have been close enough to talk to her in two weeks and it hurts to know that it is only because she is going away. “I’m going to stay with my Aunt and Uncle for a while.” She explains. Beth’s Aunt is mated to an Alpha of a pack a couple of hours drive away. It’s a strong, allied pack and movement of wolves between the two packs is as easy as it could possibly be, but it’s still unusual to stay in another pack. Beth and Brody have visited their Aunt in her pack several times before with their mum but have never stayed overnight there before. “You are going now, just before your 18th birthday? You will miss your party.”I ask incredulously. The party that is being set up, right now in this very room, is also for Beth’s birthday. “Yes. I don’t want to be around here anymore.” She says harshly. “You don’t want to be here to scent your mate out? I thought you were desperate to find him?” I ask. “No, that’s actually why I’m leaving. I don’t want to be around here to find my mate. Not right now.” That hits me like a punch to the chest. I had been hoping that Beth would be my mate. It’s unusual but not unheard of for an 18 year old wolf to be able to scent out their mate before their mate is 18. If she scented me on her birthday even if I couldn’t scent her yet it would give her a chance to get used to the idea of being my mate before I can scent her out and take her as my mate. She is probably expecting the same thing and that is why she is running away from me all over again. “Wow this looks amazing.” Tess says walking into the room too. “I’m so glad I caught you before you left.” She says as she gives Beth a huge hug. Did everyone know Beth was leaving except me? “I’m going to miss you so much.” Tess continues. “Im not going forever just a few weeks. I’ll be back before you know it.” “Im so glad to hear it.” Brody says joining in the hug. I want to join in too but I’m sure a hug from me is the last thing she wants so I stand and watch with my hands thrust deep in my pockets. When the group hug is over Beth walks towards me. “Goodbye Will.” She says and to my shock she gives me a quick hug, but releases me before I can get my hands out of my pockets to hug her back. She quickly turns away from me and walks away towards her mum and dad who have appeared in the doorway. I watch her leave unable to take my eyes from her. I can’t believe she is leaving before her birthday, but perhaps it is for the best if it makes her happy. She certainly hasn’t been happy here for a while.
