“Happy birthday baby bro.” Beth grins out of the screen at me.
“Happy birthday. Are you feeling old?” I joke. Beth was born a whole 7 minutes before me and she would always be the big, bossy, responsible sister no matter how old we were.
“Incredibly. Have you seen Tess yet?” She asks expectantly.
“No, not yet. I’ve only just woken up.” I say through stifled yawns.
“Oops. Sorry. I didn’t realise how early it was. Don’t hang about though, everyone wants to know whether you have scented her out.” She explains although I don’t need her to remind me that everyone is waiting almost as anxiously as me and Tess to see if I can scent out my longtime girlfriend as my fated mate.
“Look even if I don’t, it doesn’t mean I won’t when she turns 18.” I say wistfully, knowing that there is only actually a very small chance that I will know either way today.
“I know but it would be good to know though, right?” Beth asks. However slim the possibility is, it is what both me and Tess have been praying to the moon goddess for.
“I take it you haven’t scented anyone out yet?” I try to change the subject a little.
“Hell no. That’s why I’m here. I’m not ready for a mate yet. Although that would be funny, in an ironic way, I don’t think my mate will be in this pack.”
“No. I hope not. You‘ll be back for Will’s birthday though right?” I ask hopefully.
“I don’t know. I’m not promising. I’ll think about it, but I still don’t want to see him just yet.” She says and her eyes betray her sadness.
“He is sorry, you know.” I tell her for about the one hundredth time.
“I don’t know. It’s just the way he is, he doesn’t need to apologise to me for it.” She says looking down. “I miss you.” She says and I can tell by the look on her face that she really does mean it.
“I miss you too. Come home soon. Please.” I plead desperately, even putting my hands together in a prayer pose.
“Ok. I’ll speak to you later, have a fantastic day and enjoy your party.” She says putting on a fake excited smile.
“Yes, you too, bye.” I say ending the call. I miss Beth like crazy. I am not used to her not being here, we are hardly ever apart and I guess that is part of the problem and part of the reason why she has gone away. I know seeing Will with someone else was really hard for her after how close they had been getting, and she can’t avoid Will whilst she is in our pack, but I don’t like how she isn’t here. Will is not going to be happy if she isn’t back for his birthday as well. He isn’t happy at all that his father allowed her to leave indefinitely anyway, but Alpha Lucas understands that it’s for the best. No one has enjoyed seeing how down Beth has been the last couple of weeks and although neither one of them have said exactly what happened between them, it is very obvious, to me at least, that Beth had fallen for Will and had then caught him with another she-wolf. I don’t necessarily agree with what my friend did that night but it’s just the way he is, he has never had a steady relationship and I don’t know why Beth would think he would stop now. Although I’m sure it will be a different story when he finds his mate, whether it be Beth or another she-wolf. Goddess I hope it is Beth. It would be the perfect way for Beth to stay in this pack.
I quickly get ready and head downstairs, it’s barely even 7:30am when I leave the pack house and head over to Tess’ house. I didn’t want to meet her this morning in front of everyone with all eyes on us, with everyone watching to see what will happen. I’m nervous. In fact nervous is an understatement. I want her to be my fated mate so much but I can’t make it what it isn’t. I can’t lie to her. She will find out in four months when it is her birthday anyway. I knock on her door and her mum lets me in and I walk through the house to Tess’ bedroom and knock on the door then wait.
“Come in.” She says in a quiet apprehensive voice. I take a deep breath through my mouth to steady my nerves and open the door to the most beautiful sight I have ever seen. Despite the early hour Teas has spent a lot of time doing her hair and make up and has on a gorgeous short white dress that shows off her perfect figure. I stand in the doorway unable to move. I want to take a deep breath of her so badly, but I don’t want to be disappointed. I want to scent her out but I don’t want to take the chance for her to scent me out away from her. I take a slow breath in and hold it.
“So?” She demands unable to wait any longer.
“So.” I say back to her, pulling her into my arms so I can smell her scent better. “Don’t you want to wait until your birthday? I don’t want to spoil the surprise.”
“Do you know?” She asks as her voice starts to quiver nervously. I had wanted to toy with her a bit longer but I can’t bear to see her looking so frightened, but maybe a bit longer won’t hurt too much.
“What do you think?” I ask her as she pulls back and looks carefully into my eyes trying to find a clue or a hint. I place a gentle kiss on her lips and feel the sparks between us. They are only small but definitely there, just like her scent.
“I still want to be with you even if we’re not goddess gifted mates.” I say trying to keep my voice from betraying me, but I feel terrible when I see the tears forming in her eyes. “We don’t need to worry about that though.” I stroke her hair from her face lovingly.
“You can scent me?” She asks incredulously her eyes wide searching my face for my reaction.
“Not a lot but enough for me and Maddox to be sure.” I reassure her. “You feel amazing too and I’m sure it’s only going to get better after your birthday.” I say and then kiss her again relishing the sparks that tingle all over every part of my body that touches hers. This is the perfect way to start my birthday.

I walk into the party room with Tess and realise that we are late. We were supposed to be arriving about half an hour ago but I couldn’t keep my hands off Tess, and to be honest she hadn’t put up any resistance to my persistent kisses and touches. Nearly everyone I know is already here and the empty glasses on the tables tell me that some have been here for a while. The party has become a different type of celebration throughout the day, as word slowly spread throughout the pack that the future Beta had scented out his mate. A crowd starts to form around the two of us as everyone offers their congratulations. I notice Will hanging back from the crowd patiently waiting to talk to us on our own. I spoke with him earlier today and although he is pleased for me he is devastated that Beth isn’t here to scent him out too, but I’m almost certain if she was here today and she was able to scent him out it wouldn’t be the happy occasion it is for me and Tess.
“Congratulations. I’m so pleased for both of you.” He finally says whilst giving Tess a hug and me a pat on the back. “Have you heard anymore from Beth?”
“No, not since this morning. Aunt Helen has been keeping her busy doing all sorts of things for her birthday and to get ready for the party that they are having over there.” I reply.
“She is still coming back soon though isn’t she?” He asks hesitantly.
“Yes, of course.” I smile back at my best friend although I have absolutely no idea if I am telling him the truth.
“I wish she was here now.” He grumbles despondently.
“Yes me too.” I add placing my arm around his shoulder.
“Hey Will.” A scantily clad she-wolf walks up to him and places her hand on his arm. “Do you want to dance?” She asks cheerfully and she tries to pull him away from me and onto the dance floor.
“No thanks. I’m busy right now.” He replies without even looking at her, blatantly avoiding making eye contact with her.
“Ok. Maybe later then.” She says letting go of his arm and walking away from him onto the dance floor alone.
“Is that her?” Tess accuses Will ominously. The venom in her voice showing all the contempt that she feels for the situation and I wonder if maybe Beth has said more to Tess than she has told me.
“Leave it Tess.” I plead with my mate. Will is definitely not in the mood for a lecture right now. He knows he f****d up and he feels terrible about it. Will is used to having girls throw themselves at him and if I hadn’t been so obviously committed to Tess I’m sure I would have had my pick of them too and I don’t know if I would have been any different with them as Will has been. As far as I know though Will hasn’t been near that she-wolf since the house party at Denny’s, hell he hasn’t been near she-wolves since that night. He’s been far too busy beating himself up about what could have been with Beth.
“What? I just hope it was worth it.” Tess replies sharply.
“It wasn’t.” Will retorts as he turns and strides quickly away from us towards an empty table in the far corner of the room.
“Goddess Tess.” I fume at her.
“One of my best friends isn’t here for her birthday because of him.” She reasons angrily.
