Chapter 3 Elizabeth “I’m sorry—I’m so sorry—” The words spilled out of me in a desperate rush, and the second Cody’s grip locked around Oliver’s wrist. I already knew what waited for me later: the cold silence, the punishments that never left marks where anyone could see, the way Oliver would make me pay for embarrassing him in front of important men. But Cody’s eyes held something far more terrifying. The way he stared at Oliver made my blood run cold. There was a raw, murderous threat simmering right under the surface, and the tiny twitch in his jaw told me he was one breath away from wrapping those big hands around my husband’s throat and squeezing until the life left his body. I couldn’t stay and watch. I turned and ran. My bare feet slapped against the marble as I fled down the hallway, up the stairs, and straight into our bedroom. I slammed the door so hard the frame rattled, then stumbled into the bathroom and dropped to my knees in front of the toilet. Bile rose fast and vicious. In seconds, I was heaving, throwing up everything in my stomach—which was nothing but water and the bitter taste of fear. My throat burned. My eyes watered. When it finally stopped, I stayed there with my forehead pressed to the cool porcelain, shaking so hard my teeth chattered. What was wrong with me? Why was I reacting like this? Why were these men still able to reach inside my chest and twist everything until I couldn’t breathe? I pushed myself up and looked into the mirror. The woman staring back at me was a stranger. I wasn’t the scared little girl they used to corner behind the school building anymore. I was married. I was supposed to be stro— But I couldn’t even finish the thought because I was anything but strong. Strong women didn’t let their husbands raise a hand to them and still bow at their feet like nothing happened. Strong women didn’t stay in marriages where they were clearly not wanted. Strong women didn’t shrink themselves until they disappeared. When had I become this version of myself? For one wild second, I wanted to pack a bag and run. The Ghost brothers had found me, and it felt safer to disappear before they decided what to do with me. But where would I go? I had nothing left. I had sold everything—my grandmother’s house, the only inheritance I ever had—just to pour money into Oliver’s tech company when it was still a struggling dream. He knew it. He knew there was nowhere for me to run outside these four walls. My little mechanic shop wasn’t booming the way I once hoped. Even though I was a genius with machines and code, I couldn’t grow the business without investors, and I refused to go back to the one thing I was truly good at. Hacking. I had sworn I would stay away from that life forever. I bent over the sink, turned on the cold water, and rinsed the bitter taste from my mouth. The bathroom door shook once, then opened. Rave filled the entire doorway, his huge frame blocking out the light from the bedroom. Dark grey eyes locked onto mine. His lips curled slowly into something between a smirk and a warning. Back at the table, I had tried to convince myself he didn’t recognize me, but the way he looked at me now made it clear he knew exactly who I was. He was remembering everything—every threat, every rumor, every time he and the others had decided my life for me. “Elizabeth.” My full name left his mouth like a dark omen. They had always refused to call me Lizzy or Liz, no matter how many times I begged. He shut the door behind him with a soft, final click, and I moved back on instinct, my body going rigid against the far wall. “What are you doing in here?” My voice came out shaky and thin. “You can’t be here.” Rave tilted his head slightly. “Why not? Because of the husband who likes to leave his handprints on you like tattoos?” The words hit me harder than any slap. I flinched, then anger flared hot and sudden inside my chest. “You know nothing about my marriage.” He chuckled, low and dark, and started walking toward me. I tried to step away, but there was nowhere to go. In three strides, he had me caged between the cold tiled wall and the hard heat of his body. He leaned in until his mouth was only inches from mine. “Was it worth it, Elizabeth?” he murmured. “Was this the fairytale you left an amazing life for?” An amazing life? A humorless laugh tore out of me before I could stop it. “Amazing? My life was never amazing. You three made it hell. You tortured me until I didn’t even know who I was anymore. You turned me into the school joke. You spread that rumor about me having STDs so no boy would ever touch me. You isolated me! You controlled every single breath I took. You were gucking horrible to me!” I forced myself to look him straight in the eye even though my heart was trying to claw its way out of my chest. “My husband might be a monster, but he’s a monster I would rather waste my entire life on than go back to being a caged dog for the three of you.” Something flickered across Rave’s face. For a split second, his expression rattled—conflicted, almost like regret—before the hard, unreadable mask slammed back into place. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, voice low and tight with frustration. “Everything we did was for your own good. Do you have any idea how many worthless boys were circling you back then? How many of them would have used you and thrown you away the second they got what they wanted? We needed them to know you weren’t attainable. Not to them. Not to anyone who didn’t deserve you. That rumor? It kept the trash away. It kept you safe.” “Safe?” I laughed bitterly, the sound cracking in my throat. “You destroyed me. You made me feel dirty and unwanted. I walked those halls alone for years because of you.”
