GET ON, ELIZABETH

Chapter 5 Elizabeth I pushed through the front door with an excited smile already stretching across my face. Today was our wedding anniversary, and for the first time in months, I actually felt hopeful that it might go well. The small paper bag in my hand held the AR glasses Oliver had been gushing about for weeks. I had saved for them in secret, skipping lunches and working extra hours at the shop just so I could watch his face light up the way it used to. As I stepped inside, memories of the past few days floated up and softened the edges of my nerves. Ever since the incident with Rave, Oliver had been strangely calmer. Kinder, even. I had braced myself for the explosion—expected him to rage, to scold me, maybe even hit me after finding me in that bathroom with another man. Instead, he had come into the bedroom that night looking almost ashamed. “I’m sorry,” he had said, voice low as he sat on the edge of the bed. “For almost hitting you earlier. I lost my temper in front of the clients. It won’t happen again.” The next morning, a vase of white roses appeared on the kitchen counter with a note that simply read "Forgive me." I had clung to those small mercies like a drowning woman. The house was silent the way it always was in the late afternoon. But when I saw the corridor light still on, my heart lurched hard against my ribs. Oliver should have been at the office. My mother-in-law had left for the spa hours ago. I had closed the shop early just so I could decorate the house for tonight. A strange unease slid under my skin, but I shoved it away and told myself it was only excitement mixed with nerves. He must have forgotten to switch the light off before he left. I walked toward our bedroom, already planning where to hang the little string lights I had bought. Then I heard it. Soft moans drifting through the slightly open door. I stopped dead. At first, the sounds were almost too quiet to believe, but when I took another step closer, I caught the unmistakable wet slap of skin against skin. My eyes widened in pure horror. I slapped a hand over my mouth to muffle the gasp that tried to escape. No. No, it couldn’t be. He wouldn’t do this to me. Not today. Not on the day that was supposed to mark our new beginning. Karen’s moan rose louder, and I recognized her voice even from where I stood. “f**k… right there,” Karen’s voice spilled out, low and husky. “Oh harder, Oliver. Please…don’t stop.” Oliver’s answering groan was deep and hungry. “You feel so f*****g good. So tight. Nothing like—” For one cowardly second I thought about turning around and walking away so I could keep pretending this wasn’t real. But somewhere deeper I knew it was time. Time to finally see the kind of man I had wasted years of love on. I pushed the door open. Oliver was completely naked, driving into Karen against the headboard with hard, relentless thrusts. The sight tore through me harder than anything I had imagined. A choked sob broke from my throat before I could stop it. Both of them turned at the sound. Oliver merely glanced at me, then slid his hand between Karen’s thighs and began rubbing her swollen c**t in slow, deliberate circles. She threw her head back with a loud, shameless moan. He didn’t even respect me enough to stop. He didn’t care what this was doing to me. “Oliver!” His name ripped out of me in a raw cry. Only then did his body go rigid. His jaw clenched as he finally spilled inside her with a low groan. When it was over he pulled away, wrapped the sheet loosely around his waist, and looked at me with lazy, almost bored eyes. Karen simply stretched out on the bed, not bothering to cover herself, a satisfied little smile still playing on her swollen lips. “You came back from work early today,” Oliver said, as if we were discussing the weather. Something hot and violent cracked open inside my chest. “Is that all you have to say?” My voice shook with rage. “After I walk in and find you f*****g another woman? Does our marriage mean so little that you can disrespect me like this on our anniversary?” His face twisted into mild confusion, then he let out a short, sarcastic laugh. “What did you expect, Lizzy? We haven’t had s*x in almost six months. Did you really think I was going to ignore my own needs forever?” “You’re the one who chose not to touch me!” I shot back. “Every time I tried to get close, every time I reached for you, you pulled away like I disgusted you.” “You do.” The two words landed like a slap. I stared at him. “What?” “You disgust me,” he said plainly. My throat closed as hot emotions rose up. “How can you be so casual about this? Haven’t I given you enough love? Enough of myself?” Karen finally spoke from the bed, her voice dripping with amusement as she traced a finger through the mess on her thigh. “Oh, stop being so dramatic. You should have seen this coming a long time ago. Fat women like you don’t deserve real love. You’re lucky Oliver stayed with you this long.” My hand flew up before I could think, ready to wipe that smug smile off her face. But the second I moved, Oliver’s eyes snapped to me with a protective glare so sharp it froze me in place. "Don’t you even dare..." he seethed, his look—fierce, possessive, willing to destroy anyone who threatened her—used to be mine. He used to look at me that way. Now I was the threat. The realization cut through my chest like a knife. "Fine." I lowered my hand slowly. Enough dwelling on the past. I had always known this day would come. I just never imagined he would be this careless about breaking me. With a tight, empty smile I reached for my left hand and began sliding the wedding ring off my finger. Oliver’s eyes narrowed. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” “I’m done,” I said quietly. “I want nothing to do with you or your failed promises. I should have left a long time ago, but I kept hoping one day you would actually see me.” His expression shifted into irritation and anger. “You’re bluffing. This is just another tantrum. The second you come back to your senses you’ll be crawling right back to me.” I met his gaze without flinching. “A week ago I would have. When I was still stupid enough to be madly in love with you. But now the only thing left in my heart for you is the betrayal you planted there.” I tossed the ring onto the bed. It landed right in front of Karen with a soft metallic clink. “You can have it,” I told her, voice steady. “Take my leftovers. They’re all yours.” I turned and started walking toward the door. Behind me I could feel their stunned silence, the sudden weight of the feistiness they hadn’t expected from me. Just before I stepped completely out, Oliver’s voice followed, cold and certain. “I’ll be expecting you back, Elizabeth. You’re nothing outside these walls. You won’t survive a single day without me.” I paused, a small smile touching my lips even though I didn’t look back. “You can put a bullet through my head if I ever beg you to take me back.” Then I left. Oliver might have been right about a lot of things, but there was one truth he was completely clueless about. I still had the power to destroy him. On my way through the living room I reached behind the couch and pulled free the small black chip I had hidden there months ago. I had left the world of hacking behind for him—clean slate, new life, all of it. But I would be damned if I didn’t give him a taste of his own medicine. The second I stepped onto the street the full impact of what had just happened slammed into me. My heart ached so hard it felt like it might crack open. My limbs went numb. I had almost ruined myself for this man. I had built my entire world around him, and this was how he paid me back. I didn’t realize how weak and hungry I truly was until the loneliness sank into my bones. I had nowhere to go. My legs were already giving out when I heard the loud, throaty rev of a motorcycle. It rolled to a stop right beside me. I looked up, and my pale blue eyes met a pair of dark ones that I knew far too well. Cody sat astride the bike, thick black leather jacket stretched across his broad shoulders, dark jeans clinging to his muscular legs. He looked like sin itself—dangerous, tempting, the kind that pulls you under before you even realize you’re drowning. His gaze skimmed slowly over my pale, shaking form. Then he spoke, voice low and rough. “Elizabeth. Get on.”
