Melissa was glad she could finally breathe fresh air. Spending a night in that dirty room had been a nightmare and she was glad she was out.
However, her happiness soon deflated when she remembered that she would be serving as Jordan's maid now. How much worst could her life get? Just a week ago, she had plans for herself but now she couldn't fulfil any.
It was just like a dream to Melissa; she still could not believe that her mother had sold her off to someone as vicious as Jordan Gomez just to pay her debt. Was that how greedy her mother was? Had the sweet woman she had known changed to someone else over the years she was away? Why then would she plead with her to return to Cumbria instead of facing Jordan? Why had her mother been so concerned about her wellbeing?
It was all too confusing and thinking about it made Melissa's head hurt more than it was hurting due to her dehydration: she still hadn't gotten any food or water to drink and she felt her faltering legs would give way soon. She was totally exhausted and worn off but neither of the men deemed it sensible to give her something to eat.
After Jordan had left the room, Louis dragged her up from the floor and pushed her out of the room. He had taken her out of the building and now they were making their way to the large kitchen.
Melissa had hoped she would not encounter Madam Riela or any of the labourers and she was thankful she didn't. If she could have her way, she would love to never see any of their faces again including Paula. The hurt from her betrayal was still very fresh in her mind and Melissa was not sure she would never forgive her.
"Walk quickly!" Louis snapped at her and Melissa rolled her eyes, muttering words under her breath as she walked.
"What are you saying?" Louis stopped walking and Melissa folded her arms.
"Why don't you tell me?"
The huge man's eyes twitched and with clenched teeth, he spoke.
"I'll teach you a lesson one of these days."
"Indeed." Melissa scoffed.
She knew Louis had meant his threat but she was not scared of him anymore. What else did he want to do that would surpass what he had already done? She had been locked in a room filled with cobwebs for goodness sake. What else would he do?
They finally got to the kitchen and Louis began telling the head maid about Melissa. The head maid was a chubby elderly woman with a kind set of eyes. She was round all over and on her neck were many folds due to fat. Her uniform was tight on her and as she walked, it seemed the light material would tear.
As she spoke with Louis, the head maid kept glancing at her but Melissa's eyes were on the pot of food the chef was making. It looked so yummy that Melissa's tummy began to growl. Embarrassed, Melissa held her tummy, trying to stop her tummy from making funny noises.
"Are you hungry, dear?" The kind chef from earlier asked and Melissa lowered her eyes, unused to the benevolence she was getting. Everyone was so rude to her so seeing the chef look at her with such motherly affection felt strange to Melissa.
"She had better not because she has some work to do." The head maid spoke and Melissa raised her head to look at the woman. Did she say the woman had a kind set of eyes? She must have been seeing wrongly.
"Louis told me you'll be serving as Sir Jordan's maid. Well, I don't know the reason for this new arrangement but Louis said it was Sir Jordan's idea so . . ." The head maid trailed off as she walked to stand by the chef who was now dishing food into a fancy plate. The chef placed the dish on a tray before handing it over to the head maid who in turn handed it over to Melissa.
"Take this." She said. "This is for Sir Jordan. Go and serve him. He likes his food served hot and early."
Melissa took the tray carefully from the woman, her nostril inhaling the sweet aroma of properly cooked steak with fries and salad. It made her tummy rumble more. Melissa sighed. If only she could just eat this.
Just then, a lady floated into the kitchen like an elf, a sweet smile on her face as she rushed to where the chef stood.
"Sir Jordan's food. You know he likes it hot and early." She said in a sing-song voice and the chef exchanged looks with the head maid.
"Sonya. You won't be serving the master anymore. He's got himself a new maid." The head maid nodded towards Melissa and Sonya's light-brown eyes followed the direction the head maid had nodded to. She gasped when she saw Melissa standing with the tray of food in her hand.
"What? How can this be?" Her light brown eyes widened in shock. "Sir Jordan isn't one to change his maid anyhow."
"Well, he just did. You should follow her to show her the master's room. Also, brush her up on everything you think she needs to know about serving Sir Jordan. You know how the master can be when there is a little mistake." The head maid said. Then she turned to look at Melissa. "You don't want to make a mistake on your first day."
Sonya nodded and quietly, she walked out of the kitchen with her shoulders drooped. Her buzzy aura and exuberance had suddenly disappeared and now, she looked moody like a kid whose favourite toy had been taken away.
Melissa followed her quietly, trying to keep up with her fast pace. The girl kept taking various bends and turns that Melissa lost count. The house was so big and Melissa knew she could get lost in it. She wasn't even sure she knew her way back to the kitchen. They had taken so many turns and climbed many stairs, it was tiring.
Sonya suddenly stopped walking and Melissa raised a brow as she stopped walking too.
"What did you do?" Sonya asked with her back turned and Melissa's brow furrowed in confusion. What was this brunette talking about?
"How do you mean?"
"I mean, what did you tell Sir Jordan? Why is he making you his maid?" She finally turned and Melissa gasped at the anger she could see on the girl's face and eyes. Her nose was flaring and her cheeks were puffy. She was red all over and Melissa could see imaginary steams steaming off her head.
"I have always been the one to serve him and I have never made a mistake. What did you tell Sir Jordan?"
"I didn't tell him anything. If there is anything I wanna be doing now, it definitely isn't standing here with you, holding this stupid tray. Do you think I wanna be here? Do you think I wanna serve him? I would prefer to dine with rattlesnakes than serve as a maid for that asshole!" Melissa spilt out before she could even think.
Talking about Jordan Gomez made her angry and irritated. She was fed up with that mad man and she was even angrier that she had to serve him now. If only she could find a way to get herself out of this mess.
"How can you say such a thing?" Sonya's light brown eyes were wide with horror and her palms were covering her lips. She looked sideways before coming closer to Melissa, her short frame making her look little, unlike Melissa's tall 5'8.
"Do you know you are talking about the master?"
"To hell with your master. He isn't mine. He's a beast!"
Sonya gasped again, her already wide eyes widening even further. She looked like she had seen a ghost.
"Sir Jordan isn't a beast."
"Oh yeah? Tell me more."
"He isn't. You say this because you don't know him." Sonya frowned, her lips forming an angry pout. "He's sweet in his own way."
"I see." Melissa sneered, rolling her eyes at the brunette.
"I swear. He's not who you think he is."
"Whatever."
"Why are you here then if you hate being here so much?"
"I wonder why."
"But - "
"What are you both doing standing there?" A deep voice was heard and the two ladies turned to look at who it was. It was Louis and his grey eyes were filled with anger as his wide chest heaved. Melissa wasn't surprised to see him looking furious because the bearded man was always angry.
"The boss is waiting for his food and you both are discussing?"
"No, we aren't. We were only - - I was just - -" Sonya stuttered.
"Shut up!" Louis spat in irritation. "You," he turned to Melissa who was watching them both quietly with a bored expression on her face.
"Follow me!"
"I was gonna show her - " Sonya was beginning to say but Louis raised a hand to silence her and with her head bowed, she soberly turned to go.
