Jordan massaged his shoulder as he walked into the large spacious room. He quickly placed his hat on the rack by the corner of the wall, kicking his shoes off and plopping onto the king-sized bed which was by the tall window. He was beyond tired and every part of his body screamed rest.
Staring at the chandelier on the white ceiling, Jordan cursed under his breath, hating that he had to do all the work himself. But he knew it was way better than having to see his father's face. The old man had left for New York for some sort of vacation and Jordan was glad he did, because he could finally breathe some fresh air.
The knock on the door brought him out of his thought and he pushed himself to a sit-up position, preparing to scream at who it was at the door. He was sure it was the maid he had asked on his way to his room to get him his food.
The maids were now slacking and Jordan felt it would be nice to send them all away and employ new ones. He was sure he could replace them in no time, judging from the influence he had and how everyone wanted to work for him.
Everyone except one. . .that Ginger head lady with the dark brown eyes, slim nose and full lips. Strange how he had not been able to get the image of her face out of his head.
The knock came again and the door slightly opened, giving way for Louis, his right-hand man. Jordan fell back to the bed with a groan immediately Louis walked in.
"You look so tired," Louis observed and Jordan shut his eyes.
"I am tired."
"Why are you so tired?. You didn't do much, if I may say."
"Keep your opinion to yourself." Jordan snapped, making Louis chuckle a bit.
"What's up? I just left your annoying ass a minute ago so why are you here?"
"I got some news," Louis informed, turning serious.
Despite having his eyes shut, Jordan could sense the urgency in Louis' voice so he sat up immediately, his eyes narrowing.
"Spill."
"It's about your father. I don't think you're gonna like this."
"Is he coming back?" Jordan immediately asked and Louis nodded.
"In a month."
"f**k!" Jordan punched the air. "f**k!" He repeated, standing to his feet and running his fingers through his dark curls.
"Why so soon? Didn't he say he was gonna spend six months or so? What changed?"
"I honestly don't know. I'm just as surprised."
"Do you think he heard something to make him change his mind?" Jordan couldn't help but ask even when he couldn't tell what exactly he didn't want his father to know. It was not like he had any secret. Everything he did, he did without disguise. He feared no one in this town and he was always open with his action so there was no secret.
"What does he want to find out?"
"I don't know." Jordan threw his arms in the air. He hated this. He hated this so much and he wanted badly to buy some time away from that monster. He wondered what had made his father change his mind all of a sudden and it was irritating that he couldn't find any reason to explain this.
"What do you want me to do?" He heard Louis say and he turned to look at the heavily bearded man, his grey eyes filled with compassion or pity? Jordan hated to be looked at that way.
"Don't f*****g stare at me that way!" He growled and Louis lowered his eyes.
"Let the old fool come. I'll handle him myself." He deadpanned, his voice laced with venom and Louis nodded.
For a moment, it was quiet inside the room like they were both lost in their thought but Jordan soon broke the silence.
"This has f*****g ruined my mood. I need to loose some nuts."
"Alright, boss." Louis saluted, knowing fully well what Jordan meant by 'loosing some nuts'. He had been with Jordan for about twenty years now; he had watched the boy grow so he could confidently say he knew him and what was going on in his head most times.
He was about to leave the room to do what he had been told when Jordan's voice stopped him.
"How about the girl?"
Slowly, Louis turned around to look at Jordan who was now pulling his shirt off.
"I did as you said. She's with Madam Riela. She's part of the labourers working on the farm."
"Good." Jordan nodded, a small smile gracing his lips. It confused Louis. He had been surprised when Jordan had ordered him to pay a visit to the girls' mother after taking her in but he had learnt not to question the boss' action.
"You look like you have a question," Jordan stated the obvious and Louis wasted no time in nodding.
"Go on! I'll answer just one though." Jordan was now shirtless, his broad tanned chest in full view, coupled with his toned belly.
"Why do you want the girl? It's definitely not because you want her to work on your farm. You already have tons of workers and even more who would give everything to work with you. So why her?" Louis was confused. He was glad that Jordan had offered to answer one of his numerous questions. Things like this only happened once in a while and Louis made sure to grab the opportunity every time. Living with Jordan did nothing but wrought more questions in him.
Of all things Louis had been expecting, laughing hadn't been on the list so when Jordan began to laugh, Louis wondered if he had unknowingly cracked a joke while talking. He wanted to ask what was funny but he knew Jordan would either take offence or answer the question, then claim to have answered his one chance question. Louis could still remember how angry he had felt the last time Jordan had cheated him that way and now he was wise enough to keep shut so he wouldn't lose the answer to this question too.
"I knew you've always wanted to ask," Jordan said, after laughing to his fill.
"Well, I want her because she's the most precious thing her mother has. It's that simple."
"I don't understand." Louis found himself saying after pondering on Jordan's answer for a while.
"Well, I'll explain." Jordan smiled, walking to where Louis stood and wrapping his arm around the huge man's shoulders.
"I saw the way that girl's mother screamed the moment she saw her daughter walking out of the house. It was obvious that she didn't want to place her daughter at risk. You know she lied that she had no one when we asked her for a guarantor, someone we could approach if she failed to pay her debt. She didn't provide collateral too, what we could mortgage on. It is clear that all this while, she has been trying to keep her daughter safe."
"I don't blame the woman. That's the only person she has left." Louis shrugged.
"Good!" Jordan clapped his hand like a jackpot had been hit. "That's why I took her away. You know that's the only way I have fun. Taking what people call precious away from them. It pleases me." Jordan's smile broadened, displaying the dimples on both sides of his cheeks.
It had always marvelled Louis how Jordan could afford to smile so beautifully after saying something so absurd. This was not the first time he was doing this. Louis could still remember how Jordan had grinned like a maniac when he had successfully taken a toy his schoolmate held dear, only to flush the toy into the toilet.
He had also smiled this way when he had taken a gold bracelet owned by a counterman. He had first appraised the bracelet the guy wore and the clueless man had happily told him that he had been given it by his mother on her death bed.
The man had gone further to ramble at how precious the bracelet was to him but Jordan had taken it, only to smash the bracelet under his feet right after he left.
Why take something that precious if you were only going to ruin it, Louis had always wondered but he knew he couldn't ask.
"What are you gonna do with her now?" Louis asked the opposite of what he wanted to know.
"I don't know." Jordan shrugged. "I haven't figured that out yet."
"But — " Louis was about saying but the knock on the door interrupted him and a young maid walked in with a tray of food in her hand.
"Your food, sir." She bowed and Jordan's face screwed up.
"And how many minutes would that take you?" He thundered, marching to where the shaking girl stood.
"I - - I - - " The girl stuttered.
Without a word, Jordan grabbed the tray from her hand and tossed it to the ground. The girl jumped from the shock and the noise.
"I - - I - - " Jordan mimicked. "Clean this mess and get the f**k out of here!" He growled and the girl ran out of the room in tears to get a broom.
"I'm going to shower. Get the women ready. I need them on my bed when I'm out." He told Louis, before disappearing into the bathroom.
Louis stared at his retreating figure for a while before staring at the mess on the floor. Jordan was a bunch of surprises and it was like he revealed a new part of himself every day.
With a sigh, he turned around to get some ladies from the harem who would help loosen Jordan's nuts.
