A Calculated Risk

Chapter 3 Elliot's pov Things always get complicated when civilians get involved, I always say this over and over again but it looks like no one ever listens or learns. “You! I saw you today. You came to the cafe where I work and you ordered black coffee!” “You have a remarkable memory,” I responded with relief washing over me as we began to see more cars and came to a more crowded road. “Do you happen to remember your neighborhood? Let me drop you off…” She suddenly grew quiet, then she eyed me suspiciously. “I didn't really peg you as the knight and shining armor type, but thanks for saving my life anyways,” “Most people would have just said thanks but sure you're welcome,” Those eyes of hers still didn't leave me, then she lowered them. Falling back into silence again I couldn't just keep burning gas while she said nothing so I asked her where she lived once more and she just shook her head and told me that I should drop her off at the nearest police station. Hearing about the police I immediately tensed up, they had recently done a reform under the government and now they were not playing nice like before. Things were not business as usual and if she went to report what she had seen then it would complicate things. Dammit and everything was going so well, maybe we should have never borrowed that bastard money to begin with. He kept piling up his debt over and over again trying to dodge us thinking that he could, well he got what he deserved for trying to act smart but now there was one small problem. A witness. We had our way of dealing with witnesses, but there was no need to get to messy at least not for now witnesses were not meant to be ignored, things could easily get messy because they were like ticking time bombs except you couldn't see the time and you didn't know when they were going to explode but you knew that they would eventually. Maybe I should just take care of her now? “Why do you want to go to the station?” She took deep breaths like she was mentally preparing herself for what she had to say next. It always reminded me how much of my humanity I had lost whenever I saw how a civilian reacted to death. The look of pure horror and fear and their eyes as they questioned their own mortality and how fragile it could be…but there wasn't only fear behind those eyes there was something else, a determination that I had not seen in a while. “I was going there too catch my ex-boyfriend…well we have not broken up officially but I guess that's not possible anymore since he's dead,” “What happened to him?” It was already asking this with such a cool to when I knew exactly what happened to him. Afte I had ordered for it and watched it with my very eyes unfold hardly blinking. “He was starved in an alley so many times I could hardly count,” Twenty seven, but I'll take a guess she would probably flip out if I said it out loud. “It's horrible, he might have not been the best boyfriend in the world but those people who did that to him they need to be stopped before they hurt anybody else,” Ugh, she was really turning out to be a problem. What do I do now? I could always turn the car around and bring her back to the very men that she had been running away from a moment ago. But maybe that will just be too troublesome. For now I would just try to talk her out of going to the police station if that didn't work then she was the one that pushed my hand to the inevitable. “Are you sure about it?” I asked her, she looked at me with wide eyes, with more than a couple of questions floating in between them then she finally voiced out the most obvious one. “Why wouldn't I report to the police? I just witnessed a crime,” “More specifically you witnessed seeing a victim, not catching the perpetrators in the act and from what I'm getting from you your relationship with that guy wasn't exactly the best,” I hope she could get what I was saying just by the implication alone but I kept speaking anyways to give her more hints just as I took another turn on the road. “If you bring all of this information to the police, what do you think they are going to conclude on the spot?” Eyes went even wider. I didn't even know that was possible. They looked like they were near ready to pop right out of their sockets. “Wait…are you telling me that I would be a suspect?” It was hard to hold back the smirk that wanted to so naturally take over my face, or kickback the excitement that was trying to crawl into my voice keeping everything monotone and natural was my main focus as I spoke to her. “Darling you wouldn't only be a suspect you would be the prime suspect from the looks of things,” She sounded taken and I could tell from the serious expression and her face that she was deeply pondering my words. I hope she made the right decision at the end of them because that was the only thing that would save her life. Finally she lifted her head and turned to me. “But you believe me right…?” “What?” “I mean…you know that I'm innocent right?” I gave her a shrug of my shoulders. “I haven't even seen this boyfriend of yours question,” I lied casually, “and I only just met you at a coffee shop today so I don't know how much my own words will weigh, so what are you going to do?” She took a deep breath, “Just drive me home,”
