POPPY One. Two. Three. Until I lost count of the subsequent glasses of whiskey I drank. When we arrived at the VIP Room, Kai Thorn was already there, sitting in the middle of the round couch. When we opened the door, his eyes immediately met mine, lingering on my eyes before traveling down, down, then he smirked and met my eyes again. Zach—Demi's long-time boyfriend—was also there, so I knew him very well. And someone named Noah. Zach introduced me to Noah but avoided introducing me to Kai Thorn. He said, "You don't need to meet him. Just a waste of your time." But instead of getting annoyed by Zach's words, Kai just laughed. Well, they all did, even Demi. I guess they were really close to joke that way with each other. I am thankful that Zach didn't introduce me as Penelope Lake. He just told them my name, and that was it. After all, all of them except Kai Thorn were wearing their masks. I lost track of time, but Demi was patiently listening to me. I recounted everything that had happened earlier, the way Alex left me, dumped me in the middle of that restaurant, to Demi. Of course, she's so mad at him. Demi had warned me about that guy so many times, but I didn't listen. Sometimes, Demi was often the one who had problems with the two of us. I met Demi when I was still in secondary high school. She wasn't rich, unlike the others. Demi's mom is my Mom's personal assistant. That's how we met. Since then, we've been inseparable. Like sisters. I only have two friends in my life. Demi and Lara. Lara is my stylist. And I also consider her as my friend. I also have Tommy, my driver since I can't remember. I also have Susan, my cook and housekeeper. And also I have Nari, my personal assistant. I don't know if I consider Bret, my Road Manager as a friend. "If I were you, I would have poured water on him! The audacity to trade you for Erika Delacroix? What the hell is wrong with him?!" Demi said angrily. I sighed, "Please, don't insult that Erika even though I'm angry at her for what happened between us in Bali and even though she went along with Alex's cheating even though she knew he already had a girlfriend." Demi playfully hit my arm. "You have every right to curse at that woman! What the hell, Pen." "I know," I sighed, rubbing my arm where Demi had hit me. "—I just chose not to. In the first place, she wasn't the one who cheated on me, she wasn't the one committed to me, she wasn't my boyfriend." "Erika Delacroix is a b***h. An ambitious, stuck-up b***h who has nothing else to brag about but her boobs, which we all know where they came from, and her ass, thanks to her doctor." Kai Thorn suddenly interjected, leaning back casually on the couch while holding his whiskey glass. Zach and Noah also looked at us, having obviously heard my exchange with Demi. I took a deep breath to calm myself, "Please, don't—" I was cut short. "If you're going to say I have no right to curse that woman, I do." He said, then took a drink from his glass without even looking at me. I adjusted my seating position, facing him directly, and crossed my arms. "Really? What right are you talking about? Hmm?" I didn't know why I felt the need to defend Erika Delacroix behind her back, even after what she did to me. I just didn't get the point, especially since she wasn't even there to defend herself. Maybe she didn't know that Alex and I were still in a relationship when she accepted his advances? I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. "Erika Delacroix is his girlfriend who ghosted him just a week ago—" Noah answered for him, my mouth gaping open as my eyes found Kai, who finished his glass of whiskey in one gulp. Oh my god. Just a week ago? Does that mean Erika ghosted him for Alex? "The hell? Why am I only finding out about this now?" Demi asked, surprised. "Babe, when did Kai ever announce a relationship?" Zach replied to her. I couldn't speak, just staring at him as he busied himself refilling his glass with whiskey. When he was done, he looked straight at me. He smirked. "Should I curse the b***h for you, Poppy?" he said. Poppy? Why does he keep calling me Poppy? Before I answered, I downed my whiskey in one gulp. I nodded sloppily. "Yeah, go ahead. Curse at her!" He chuckled, along with Noah and Zach. "Nah—I have a better idea than that." His voice was laced with malice and a dark intent. "If Alex Stanley is your ex-boyfriend, does that mean you are Penelope Lake?" Noah asked. I removed my mask, and I didn't even realize when I did it, but my eyes immediately went to Kai Thorn. He smirked behind his glass. I could see that even though the VIP room was dark, and the only lights illuminating it were the red and white LED lights. All I could hear was my heart thumping and the music blasting. "Oh s**t!" Noah exclaimed in surprise when he saw me. "—Alex Stanley is so stupid to trade you for Erika Delacroix. No offense, bro—" he patted Kai's shoulder "—Erika is beautiful and sexy too, but having a Penelope Lake." He acted as if he were blowing a chef's kiss, looking and sounding drunk already. "—it's out of this world." Then he smiled and looked at me. I smiled back at him. I knew he just wanted me to feel better, especially after they heard my crying and breakdown to Demi. "Damn right," Demi said beside me, taking a drink. "Yeah, but please. Don't compare me to her—" I looked at Kai, who was still looking at me "—not in an arrogant way, I just don't want other girls comparing each other. I'm sure Alex finds something in her, something good in her that I don't have." "Or maybe he gets something from Erika that he can't get from you," Kai replied, still looking at me. But this time his eyes were dark and intense. He looked sinister when he said that. I knew what he meant. I knew he was accusing me of being a virgin. Instead of answering him, I just took another drink. "Hey, we should dance," I said to Demi, trying to change the subject. "Ginuwine" by Pony is blasting from the Club's speaker when Demi and I got down. I put my mask back on and started dancing to the rhythm of the music. Since I had already had a few drinks, I felt comfortable and calmer dancing this time. The mask also helped me pretend that I wasn't Penelope Lake. I kept losing myself in the music, moving my hips. "Just play, Babe. Play," Demi whispered so close. And when I opened my eyes, she was already dancing sexily with Zach. If she's dancing with Zach, then who's behind me? Touching me on my shoulders and feels so close, I can feel their breath at the back of my neck.
