Chapter 4

1682 Words
Seth Montgomery is pacing up and down in his study. He is trying for the umpteenth time to get hold of Melissa. He sent one of his guards to look for her in the park, but he came back empty handed. He presses the red button on the phone a little harder than is necessary. A knock on the door makes him rush to the front door in the hopes that there is news about Melissa. He opens the door, but nobody is there. He looks around to see if he can catch a glimpse of anyone. But there is no one in sight. He looks down and sees a parcel on the doormat. A horrible feeling creeps into his heart. With the package in his one hand, he closes the door behind him with the other and walks to his study. His stomach is in knots, he doesn’t know what to expect. There are no labels on the package, no writing, just a plain brown cardboard box. With his letter opener in hand, he opens the box. He lets out a shocked gasp and falls to his knees, it is like something out of a horror movie. With shaking hands, he reaches for his phone and dial the number of his friend, Sergeant Cavanaugh. Rollo went into the office on a mission, to talk to the human council. His Chief in Command is a member, so he would start with him and try to get an appointment. His shoulder and neck are still hurting, but he healed well during the night. There were no more traces of any wounds, only the stiffness in his shoulder and neck remained. That bastard, he is playing games, he got the idea during their altercation that Dameon did not want to kill him. Maybe, he was testing his strength, who knows what was going on in that messed up head of his. Rollo is much stronger than Dameon, he realized that when they fought last night. However, it was as if Dameon gave up way too soon, he is not that weak, and he got up very quickly after he was choked out, he should have at least been unconscious for a few hours. Violet stayed the night; they were up talking until the sun started to peek out over the horizon. She went to sleep, and he took a shower and came to work. Just as he steps into his office, his cell phone rings, the caller ID says it is Hunter. “Good morning my friend” he greeted him. “Morning Rollo, I am afraid I do not call with good news” his voice sounds strained, and he sounds worried. “What is it? Just give it to me” he let out a sigh and sat down in his chair. “The victim yesterday…. She is Melissa Montgomery.” There is an awkward silence from him. He is waiting for Rollo to react as if he should know who that is. Rollo is searching his brain to try and figure out who she might be. “Montgomery?” the penny drops. “Do you want to tell me, Montgomery, like in Judge Seth Montgomery, the head of the human council?” He says through gritted teeth. “Yes, she was his daughter, she was only seventeen years old Rollo” He can hear dismay clearly in Hunter’s voice. “Dammit, this is not good at all! How did you find out that she is the victim?” Rollo asks, knowing well that his department didn’t have that information yet, they would have told him as soon as they knew. “I got a call last night from Seth, he told me to come and see him urgently. When I got there, he told me that his daughter was missing and he showed me a photo of her, I recognized her. Rollo, he suspects that it is a supernatural being that kidnapped her. He doesn’t know she is dead yet. He hired me, to find her kidnapper…. and kill him. I didn’t know how to tell him that she was dead.” Hunter finishes with worry in his voice. “Don’t worry, I will steer the investigation in that direction, I will go and see what we found out so far, as soon as we identify her, I will go and see Seth. My idea was to go and see the council today, but now it became just so much more urgent. Thank you for letting me know, I will keep you posted.” They said their goodbyes and hung up. This really isn’t good news. That was Dameon’s whole plan, to kill someone close to a council member, and who do you want to piss off more than the head of the council. Rollo gets up and calls officer Mallik into his office. “Any leads as to who this girl might be?” He asks in frustration. “We managed to find her car, the homeless man sitting at the entrance of the park said that a specific car was left there by a young girl the previous night and it was still there. We towed it into the garage for the techs to open it up and see if we can find an identification in the car. We are running the plates right now.” He is very happy to report this and is smiling from ear to ear. “Work faster, I need an identification on that girl NOW!” Rollo barked at him. "How long does it take to open that damn car and get information!? It is nine o'clock in the morning! You had since last night to get information and yet you have NOTHING!” Everyone outside his office stopped what they were doing and looked at him wide eyed. Officer Mallik looked like a deer caught in headlights, he swallowed hard. “Yes sir, I am on it, sir” he turns and basically runs out of the office. Rollo runs his hands through his hair and swears under his breath. His office phone rings, and he picks it up “What?!” He shouts into the earpiece. “Aren’t we in a good mood this morning, Good morning to you too, Detective Black” The friendly, kind voice of the medical examiner’s assistant Ashley comes over the phone. “Sorry Ash, just one of those mornings, Good morning to you too.” He cannot help smiling. “What do you have for me”? He holds his breath in the hope that she has good news for him. “We found particulates under her fingernails; the strange thing is… It is hair and skin but….it is not human, it is…. wolf. The skin has got some human qualities as well, this one is a bit of a mystery I am afraid. Her heart was ripped out by force, and lucky for her that was done postmortem. We did however run her fingerprints, and her face through facial recognition software. We got a hit on her driver’s license. Her name is Melissa Montgomery. I will send you all the information and her address. Rollo, she was only seventeen years old. What kind of animal does things like this to innocent people?” He could hear the disbelief in her voice. Yes indeed, what animal. “I don’t know Ash, but I will find out, I promise. Thank you for this information” He says and hangs up the phone. What is it with Dameon, it seems like he wants everyone to find out that we exist? His cell phone goes off again, it is Hunter… again. “We identified her, I am going to see her father now”. He answered the phone with confirmation that they know who she is. “That is great, but that is not why I am phoning. We have a huge problem. The vampires are out for revenge on the werewolves. The twins killed one of their council members. Now they want justice, and all the werewolves need to pay. That bastard is starting a war....”. Hunter says with anger clearly detectible in his voice. After they spoke a short while about the repercussions of Dameon's actions, he puts the phone down. Rollo swears under his breath. He picks up the phone and dial Violet's number. He knows she just went to sleep but he needs her help. The phone rang twice when he heard her beautiful voice over the phone. "Hey there, you, is there a problem?" She asks, it doesn’t sound like she was asleep. "Hey Vixen" he grins, he knows she pretends to hate it when he calls her that. But in fact, she loved it. "Last time I checked I am a wolf not a fox" she said pretending to be offended. "Sorry, my little warrior princess" He says and she giggles. "All jokes aside, I need your help, this situation is getting out of hand. He killed a member of the vampire council." He can hear her gasp at the news. "Please talk to Conall and find out if he can arrange a meeting with the Vampire council, we need to set the record straight. They want the werewolves to pay. All of us." He says running his hand through his hair. “The victim last night is Judge Seth Montgomery’s daughter, he is on the human council, I see a pattern here.” He says with a heavy sigh. "Sure thing, I will call him immediately. Poor girl, I wonder what their plan is?" She asks. "Sorry for interrupting your sleep, but this was urgent.” He says apologetically. "I was actually awake; I was looking through evidence from the previous werewolf killings. But I am on this now. We need to stop him; he is making a mess of everything." After they spoke for a little while longer, they hung up. He needs to get to Seth Montgomery. First, he needs to talk to Sergeant Cavanaugh.
