8:47 A.M.
The room remained silent.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Logan looked from Naomi to the cream-colored paper resting on the table.
"You've seen this paper before?"
Naomi didn't answer immediately.
Her eyes stayed on it for another few seconds before she slowly looked away.
"I... don't know."
It was the truth.
The paper stirred something inside her.
A memory.
A feeling.
Something buried so deep she couldn't reach it.
Yet.
She took a slow breath and looked around the room instead.
"The confession can wait."
Logan frowned.
"You don't want to read it?"
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because the paper isn't going anywhere."
She looked at Richard's lifeless body.
"But a crime scene only tells its story once."
Logan stared at her for a moment before giving a small nod.
"Fair enough."
Officer Ethan Cole looked between them.
"So... where do we start?"
Naomi slowly walked toward the middle of the room.
Her footsteps were unhurried.
She turned once.
Taking in every corner.
Every piece of furniture.
Every window.
Every shadow.
She wasn't looking for evidence.
The forensic team would handle that.
She was looking for...
Behavior.
She stopped beneath the hanging bulb.
It still swayed gently.
Not enough for anyone else to notice.
But enough for her.
She looked up.
"Interesting..."
Logan followed her gaze.
"What?"
She didn't answer.
Instead, she walked over to the chair Richard had been tied to.
She crouched beside it.
Her fingers hovered above the armrest without touching it.
"The knots are clean."
Officer Ethan blinked.
"Is that important?"
Naomi nodded.
"Very."
She stood again.
"The killer wasn't in a hurry."
Logan folded his arms.
"Or he simply knew what he was doing."
Naomi looked at him.
"Exactly."
A faint smile appeared on Logan's face.
She had understood his point before he finished speaking.
Naomi turned toward the table.
The chair.
The paper.
The little white saint.
Everything had been arranged with care.
Nothing looked rushed.
Nothing looked accidental.
She quietly spoke to herself.
"He likes order."
Logan heard her.
"What?"
"The killer."
She looked around once more.
"He doesn't leave things lying around."
"The confession is straight."
"The pen is beside it."
"The saint is placed carefully."
She paused.
"He respects details."
Officer Ethan scratched his head.
"I don't understand."
Naomi smiled politely.
"If this murder was only about killing..."
She pointed toward Richard.
"...none of this would matter."
Then she pointed at the confession.
"But to him..."
"This matters."
She looked back at Richard.
"The murder wasn't the message."
"The confession was."
Silence.
Even the forensic officers nearby stopped what they were doing for a second.
Logan looked at the paper again.
For the first time...
He wasn't seeing a piece of paper.
He was seeing a message.
Naomi slowly walked toward the doorway.
She looked into the hallway.
Then toward the kitchen.
Without saying a word...
She started walking.
Logan and Ethan followed.
The kitchen was spotless.
Almost too spotless.
Naomi's eyes moved from the sink...
To the refrigerator...
To the counter.
Then...
She stopped.
A loaf of bread.
A knife.
An unopened pack of butter.
Her gaze shifted to a glass sitting beside the sink.
Half-filled with water.
She looked at Logan.
"Richard came here first."
Logan looked around.
"What makes you think that?"
"He came back from work."
She pointed toward the hallway.
"His shoes are still by the entrance."
Then toward the dining table.
"His briefcase is untouched."
She looked at the bread again.
"He was about to eat."
Officer Ethan frowned.
"So the killer attacked him here?"
Naomi didn't answer.
She kept looking around.
Then she noticed something else.
The fuse box.
Its cover was open.
She slowly walked toward it.
The main switch was off.
Logan raised an eyebrow.
"What is it?"
Naomi looked at the switch.
"Did anyone touch this after the body was found?"
Officer Ethan immediately answered.
"No."
"The forensic team told everyone to leave it exactly as they found it."
Naomi nodded slowly.
Then a small piece of the puzzle clicked into place.
"The lights..."
Logan looked confused.
"What about them?"
She turned to face him.
"The lights didn't go off by accident."
Officer Ethan frowned.
"You mean..."
"The killer cut the power."
Naomi nodded.
"Before Richard entered the house."
The room became quiet again.
Logan looked back at the fuse box.
"How can you be so sure?"
Naomi stepped closer.
"If Richard had caused the power failure himself..."
"He would've turned it back on."
She gently pointed toward the switch.
"But he never got the chance."
She looked toward the dark hallway leading back to the living room.
"The killer was already waiting."
No one spoke.
For the first time...
The officers inside the kitchen began imagining the scene.
A man coming home after work.
Hungry.
Tired.
Completely unaware...
That someone else was already inside his house.
Waiting.
Naomi looked down at the floor.
"There was no struggle."
Logan nodded.
"We noticed that."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You saw there was no struggle."
"I want to know why."
Her eyes slowly lifted toward the hallway again.
"The answer..."
She said quietly.
"...is somewhere inside this house.”
Logan looked around the kitchen before turning back to Naomi.
"So..."
"What are you thinking?"
Naomi didn't answer.
Not yet.
She slowly walked back into the living room.
Her eyes drifted from the entrance...
...to the hallway...
...then finally back to Richard.
She stopped in front of the chair.
"Officer Cole."
"Yes, ma'am?"
"I need the forensic photographer."
Within seconds, a young woman carrying a camera walked into the room.
"I'm here."
Naomi looked at the body.
"I need pictures of his wrists after the ropes are removed."
The photographer looked at the medical examiner.
He nodded.
"You can proceed."
The ropes were carefully untied.
Nobody spoke.
The room became unusually quiet.
Naomi stepped closer.
She crouched beside the chair.
Richard's wrists were badly marked.
Dark red bruises circled both wrists.
She studied them for several long seconds.
Then she looked up.
"He stopped fighting."
Officer Cole blinked.
"What?"
Logan frowned.
"How can you tell?"
Naomi gently pointed toward Richard's left wrist.
"The bruises."
"They're deep..."
"But they don't overlap."
Officer Cole looked confused.
"I still don't understand."
Naomi stood up.
"When someone fights against ropes..."
"They keep twisting."
"Pulling."
"Trying to break free."
She looked at Richard again.
"The marks become uneven."
"They spread."
She pointed again.
"But these..."
"They stay almost in one place."
She became quiet.
"At some point..."
"He accepted he wasn't getting out."
Nobody said a word.
Even the photographer lowered her camera.
The silence felt heavier now.
Logan slowly looked at Richard.
"You think the killer broke him?"
Naomi shook her head.
"No."
"He broke himself."
Logan looked back at her.
"What do you mean?"
"He realized something."
"What?"
Naomi looked toward the confession lying on the table.
"He realized the killer wasn't bluffing."
Officer Cole swallowed.
"So..."
"He knew he was going to die."
Naomi didn't answer.
She simply looked away.
Sometimes...
Silence was enough.
The medical examiner finally spoke.
"I've examined dozens of homicide victims."
He adjusted his glasses.
"Most people fight until the end."
He looked at Richard.
"He didn't."
Naomi slowly walked around the chair.
Her eyes stopped on the floor.
She frowned.
There were faint scratches.
Tiny ones.
Almost invisible.
She crouched again.
Logan immediately noticed.
"What is it?"
Naomi ran one gloved finger just above the wooden floor without touching it.
"The chair moved."
Officer Cole looked confused.
"But you said there wasn't a struggle."
"There wasn't."
She stood again.
"The chair didn't move because Richard struggled."
"Then why?"
She looked toward the hanging light.
"The killer."
Everyone stared at her.
"He pulled the chair."
Logan folded his arms.
"Why would he do that?"
Naomi looked at the position of the table.
"So Richard could face the confession."
Silence.
Officer Cole slowly turned toward the table.
His heart skipped.
She was right.
The chair was positioned perfectly.
Directly in front of the paper.
Not the body.
Not the saint.
The paper.
Naomi spoke softly.
"He wanted Richard to read every word."
Logan looked toward the cream-colored sheet.
"So the confession mattered more than the murder."
Naomi nodded once.
"Much more."
She slowly walked toward the table.
This time...
She didn't ignore the paper.
She stared at it for several seconds.
Then at the fountain pen.
Everything had been placed with impossible precision.
Almost...
Respectfully.
She frowned again.
"No."
Logan looked up.
"What?"
Naomi's eyes narrowed.
"This wasn't respect."
She looked back at Richard.
"It was a ritual."
The room became still.
"A ritual?"
Officer Cole repeated quietly.
Naomi nodded.
"The paper."
"The pen."
"The saint."
"They're always arranged the same way."
She looked around the room.
"People don't repeat things like this by accident."
"They repeat them because they mean something."
Logan remained silent.
The more Naomi spoke...
The more the room changed.
It no longer looked like an ordinary murder scene.
It looked...
Personal.
Officer Cole's phone suddenly rang.
He stepped outside to answer it.
A few moments later, he returned.
His expression had changed.
"Detective Brooks."
Logan turned.
"The lab just called."
"They found a fingerprint?"
Officer Cole shook his head.
"No."
"They found nothing."
Logan sighed.
"Again."
Officer Cole hesitated.
"There is something else."
"What?"
"The lab says this paper..."
He looked toward the confession.
"...isn't sold anywhere in Blackthorn City."
Naomi's eyes lifted immediately.
"What did you say?"
"They checked local suppliers."
"No match."
"No stores."
"No distributors."
The room fell silent.
Naomi slowly looked back at the cream-colored paper.
A strange feeling settled inside her chest.
If the paper wasn't from Blackthorn...
Then where had she seen it before?
And more importantly...
Why couldn't she remember?
