Chapter 19- The Alpha’s Challenge

1812 Words
The air in the clearing felt thick with tension. No one moved. Not the wolves standing near the forest line. Not the pack members gathered behind Kael. Even the wind seemed to have gone quiet. Elara stood just behind Kael, her heart beating so loudly she was sure everyone could hear it. Across the clearing, the Blood Fang Alpha—Rurik—watched them with open amusement. His arms were crossed over his broad chest, his scarred face lit by the silver glow of the moon. He looked completely at ease. Which somehow made the situation feel even more dangerous. “Well?” Rurik said, spreading his arms slightly. “Aren’t you going to welcome guests?” Kael’s voice remained calm. “You weren’t invited.” Rurik chuckled. “Neither were the rumors about your little miracle girl.” His gaze shifted toward Elara again. She resisted the urge to step back. Instead, she lifted her chin slightly. Rurik noticed. His smile widened. “Ah. She’s got spirit.” Marcus leaned toward her slightly. “Don’t worry,” he whispered. “That’s just his face. He always looks like he’s planning something violent.” Elara muttered back, “That’s comforting.” Kael stepped forward another pace. “You’ve seen her,” he said. “Now leave.” Rurik tilted his head. “You don’t get to give orders in someone else’s territory.” Marcus frowned. “This is our territory.” Rurik grinned. “Territory belongs to whoever is strong enough to keep it.” Several of the Nightfall wolves growled low in their throats. The tension thickened. Elara could feel it pressing against her skin like electricity. Rurik slowly walked forward into the clearing. Behind him, five large wolves remained at the forest edge. Watching. Waiting. Elara’s instincts screamed that those wolves weren’t just spectators. They were backup. Marcus noticed it too. “Kael,” he murmured quietly. “They didn’t come alone.” Kael nodded once. He had already figured that out. Rurik stopped about twenty feet away. Close enough that the moonlight clearly illuminated the scars running across his arms. “You know the rules,” Rurik said. Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I’m not interested.” Rurik shrugged. “Doesn’t matter.” He rolled his shoulders slowly. “I challenge you.” A ripple of tension ran through the Nightfall wolves. Elara frowned. “Challenge?” she whispered. Marcus sighed. “Alpha challenge.” Kael’s voice remained steady. “You don’t have claim here.” Rurik smirked. “I have curiosity.” His eyes flicked toward Elara again. “And maybe ambition.” Elara didn’t like the way he said that. Not at all. Kael took another step forward. “You’re wasting your time.” Rurik laughed. “Am I?” His gaze returned to Elara. “The Moon-Chosen is standing right there.” The mark on her wrist began to glow faintly. Rurik’s smile sharpened. “See? Even the Moon agrees.” Elara’s stomach tightened. Kael noticed the glow too. His jaw clenched slightly. Rurik cracked his knuckles. “So here’s the deal, Alpha.” Kael didn’t respond. “If you win,” Rurik continued, “I leave peacefully.” Marcus muttered, “That’s a lie.” Rurik ignored him. “But if I win…” His eyes gleamed. “I get to ask the Moon girl some questions.” Elara’s voice cut in sharply. “No.” Everyone looked at her. Rurik’s grin widened. “Well, she speaks.” Elara stepped beside Kael. “You’re not fighting him because of me.” Kael glanced at her briefly. “This isn’t your decision.” “Yes it is.” Rurik chuckled. “Oh, this is getting interesting.” Kael’s expression hardened again. “Elara, go inside.” “No.” The word came out immediately. The pack members nearby shifted slightly, surprised by her defiance. Rurik clapped slowly. “Now that is entertaining.” Marcus groaned. “Please don’t encourage her.” Elara ignored him. She stared directly at Rurik. “You want to test something?” Rurik’s eyes gleamed with curiosity. “Maybe.” “Then test me.” The clearing went completely silent. Marcus whispered, “Oh boy.” Kael turned sharply toward her. “That’s not happening.” Rurik laughed loudly. “Oh I like her.” Elara crossed her arms. “You came here because of me, right?” Rurik nodded. “Partly.” “Then challenge me instead.” Marcus nearly choked. “Elara!” Kael’s voice turned firm. “No.” She looked at him. “You said Blood Fang respects strength.” “Yes.” “Then let me show them.” Kael’s eyes flashed slightly. “You’re not trained enough.” “Then this is good practice.” Marcus covered his face with his hand. “This is going badly.” Rurik rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “I have to admit… this is tempting.” Kael stepped forward again, placing himself between them. “The challenge is mine.” Rurik sighed dramatically. “Always the responsible Alpha.” Elara leaned slightly around Kael. “You’re scared I might win.” Rurik burst out laughing. “Oh that’s adorable.” But something in his eyes shifted. Curiosity. Real curiosity. The Moon mark on Elara’s wrist suddenly flared brighter. A soft silver glow spread across her skin. Rurik stopped laughing. “Well now.” Marcus whispered, “That’s new.” Kael’s attention snapped to the glowing mark. “Elara…” She felt the power rising again. Stronger than before. But this time— It didn’t feel chaotic. It felt controlled. Like the energy was listening. Rurik’s expression slowly changed. The amusement faded. Replaced by something more serious. “You really are Moon-Chosen.” Elara raised an eyebrow. “You’re just figuring that out?” Marcus snorted quietly. Rurik stared at the glowing mark. Then back at her face. “Well… now I’m definitely interested.” Kael’s voice dropped to a warning tone. “Rurik.” The Blood Fang Alpha slowly looked at him. “You’re right about one thing.” Kael didn’t respond. “This is worth testing.” Rurik stepped back a few paces. “Fine.” He spread his arms slightly. “Let’s do this properly.” Marcus whispered urgently to Elara. “If he shifts, run.” Elara whispered back, “I’m not running.” “Of course you’re not.” Kael’s voice cut through the tension. “The challenge is mine.” Rurik shrugged. “If you insist.” The clearing grew silent again. The wolves at the forest edge shifted slightly. Marcus stepped closer to Elara. “Okay, new plan.” “What plan?” “If things get ugly, we grab you and run.” “I’m not leaving.” Marcus sighed. “You’re really determined to stress everyone out, huh?” Elara didn’t answer. Her eyes were locked on Kael. Rurik and Kael slowly circled each other. The moonlight glinted off their shoulders. Both Alphas moved with controlled confidence. Predators measuring each other. Rurik grinned. “You’re younger than I expected.” Kael remained calm. “You’re louder than I expected.” Marcus whispered to Elara, “Ten silver coins on Kael.” “I’m not betting.” “Suit yourself.” Rurik rolled his neck once. “Let’s make this quick.” Then— He shifted. The transformation was fast and brutal. Bones snapping. Muscles expanding. Within seconds, a massive dark wolf stood where the man had been. Even from a distance, Elara could feel the power radiating from him. Marcus muttered, “Yeah… he’s big.” Kael didn’t hesitate. His body shifted just as quickly. The familiar silver-gray wolf emerged. Sleek. Powerful. Focused. Elara felt her chest tighten. She had seen Kael’s wolf before. But this felt different. More intense. The two wolves began circling. Growls rumbling low in their chests. Neither one attacked first. Marcus whispered commentary like a sports announcer. “This is the sizing-up phase.” Elara elbowed him. “Stop narrating.” Rurik lunged first. The impact of their bodies colliding shook the ground. Elara’s breath caught. Claws flashed. Teeth snapped. The wolves moved too fast for her eyes to fully follow. Marcus tensed beside her. “They’re evenly matched.” Kael twisted suddenly, forcing Rurik backward. The Blood Fang Alpha snarled. Rurik struck again. Harder. More aggressive. The fight intensified quickly. Dust kicked up from the clearing. Elara’s heart pounded. She hated watching this. Hated knowing the fight was happening because of her. Suddenly— Rurik slammed Kael into the ground. Marcus cursed. “Come on, Kael.” Rurik’s wolf loomed over him for a moment. Then Kael twisted sharply. Flipping the larger wolf aside. The clearing erupted with excited growls from both packs. Elara felt the mark on her wrist heat again. Her emotions were stirring the power. Kael pinned Rurik briefly. But the Blood Fang Alpha shoved him off. Both wolves circled again. Panting. Eyes blazing. Marcus whispered, “This could go either way.” Elara’s chest tightened. “Kael…” As if hearing her voice— Kael attacked again. Faster. Stronger. This time his movements carried a new intensity. Rurik barely dodged the strike. The wolves clashed again. But now Kael had the advantage. He forced Rurik backward. Closer to the forest line. Rurik snarled in frustration. Kael lunged. Pinned him. And held him there. The clearing fell silent. Rurik growled beneath him. But didn’t fight back. Slowly— The Blood Fang Alpha shifted back to human form. Kael stepped away and shifted as well. Both men stood breathing heavily. Rurik wiped blood from his lip. Then— He laughed. “Not bad.” Kael remained silent. Rurik looked toward Elara. “Now I see why the Moon chose your pack.” Marcus muttered, “Finally.” Rurik rolled his shoulders. “Relax. I keep my word.” He gestured toward the forest. “My wolves and I are leaving.” Elara blinked. “That’s it?” Rurik smirked. “For now.” His eyes lingered on her again. “But the wolf world is waking up.” His smile turned slightly darker. “And not all of them will be as friendly as me.” Marcus groaned. “That’s a terrifying sentence.” Rurik laughed again. Then shifted back into wolf form. Within seconds, he and his pack disappeared into the forest. Silence settled over the clearing. Elara exhaled slowly. Marcus clapped Kael on the shoulder. “Nice fight.” Kael barely reacted. His attention was already on Elara. He walked toward her slowly. “You okay?” She nodded. “I think so.” The glowing mark faded again. But the feeling remained. Something had changed tonight. Not just between packs. Between them too. And both of them could feel it. 🐺🌙
