Chapter 12- The Moon’s Secret

Elara woke to silence. Not the peaceful kind. The kind that felt heavy… wrong… like the world itself was holding its breath. For a moment she lay still beneath the thick blankets, staring at the wooden ceiling above her bed. Pale morning light slipped through the tall windows of Kael’s house, washing the room in soft silver. Her body felt different. Stronger. Sharper. The strange energy that had been stirring inside her for days pulsed slowly beneath her skin, like a quiet heartbeat that didn’t belong entirely to her. She flexed her fingers. The faint glow she had seen the night before didn’t appear again, but the memory of it lingered. Something had awakened in her. And she didn’t know what it was. Outside, the wind rustled through the tall trees surrounding the Alpha house. The scent of pine and damp earth drifted through the cracked window. Her senses caught every detail. Too many details. The creak of the floorboards in the hallway. The distant murmur of voices downstairs. Even the steady rhythm of Kael’s heartbeat somewhere in the house. Elara sat up slowly. Her pulse quickened when she realized she could hear him so clearly. That shouldn’t be possible. Yet the sound pulled at her like gravity. She slipped out of bed and wrapped herself in the dark sweater someone had left folded on the chair beside her bed. It was too large, the sleeves hanging over her hands. Kael’s. The scent of him clung to the fabric—warm, wild, unmistakably wolf. Her heart skipped. She pushed the thought away and stepped into the hallway. The Alpha house was quieter than usual. Sunlight streamed through tall windows, painting pale rectangles across the polished wooden floors. As she walked toward the staircase, voices drifted up from below. Low. Tense. “…she’s changing faster than expected,” someone said. Marcus. Elara froze halfway down the stairs. Kael’s voice followed, deep and controlled. “I know.” “She shouldn’t be awakening this soon,” Marcus continued. “Humans don’t develop Moon-Bound abilities overnight.” A cold shiver slid down Elara’s spine. Moon-Bound. They were talking about her. Kael sighed. “The Moon marked her. That alone changes everything.” There was a pause. Then Marcus spoke again, quieter this time. “Do you think she knows?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. “No,” he finally said. “And I’m not sure she’s ready to.” Elara’s chest tightened. Ready for what? She stepped back silently before they could notice her listening and retreated down the hallway, her mind spinning. They were hiding something from her. Something big. Outside, the forest waited. Elara stepped onto the wide porch of the Alpha house and inhaled deeply. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of pine, moss, and distant rain. The forest had never felt so alive before. Every rustling leaf, every bird call, every shifting branch seemed to whisper secrets. It felt like the woods were calling to her. Without thinking, she started walking. The dirt path curved away from the house and into the thick trees of Grey Hollow forest. Sunlight filtered through the canopy in fractured beams. Her feet moved instinctively. Deeper. Further. Until the Alpha house disappeared behind the trees. She didn’t feel afraid. Instead, a strange calm settled over her. Like she belonged here. The deeper she went, the stronger the strange energy inside her grew. Her heart beat faster. The air felt electric. And then— She stopped. A clearing stretched out before her. Elara frowned. She didn’t remember seeing this place before. Ancient stones formed a rough circle in the center of the clearing, each one tall and weathered, covered in faint carvings. Symbols. Old. Powerful. The moment Elara stepped into the clearing, the air changed. The wind stilled. The forest fell silent. And the energy inside her surged. She gasped. A flash of silver light sparked across her skin. “What…?” Her breath quickened as the symbols carved into the stones began to glow faintly. A low hum vibrated through the ground beneath her feet. The Moon-Bound mark on her wrist burned. Elara clutched her arm, pain and energy swirling together. Images flashed through her mind. Wolves running beneath a massive moon. Ancient rituals beneath stone circles. A woman standing at the center of a pack, her eyes glowing silver. Power pouring from the Moon into her veins. Elara staggered back. “No… no…” The visions stopped as suddenly as they had begun. The clearing fell silent again. Her chest rose and fell rapidly. “What the hell just happened?” A voice answered behind her. “You activated the Moon Circle.” Elara spun around. Kael stood at the edge of the clearing, his amber eyes dark with concern. Marcus stood beside him. Both of them looked tense. Like they had expected this moment. “Elara,” Kael said carefully. But she stepped back. “You knew about this place.” “Yes.” “And you didn’t tell me.” “You weren’t ready.” Anger flared inside her chest. “Stop saying that!” she snapped. “Everyone keeps acting like I’m some fragile thing that can’t handle the truth!” Kael’s jaw tightened. “It’s not that simple.” “Then explain it to me!” The clearing went quiet. Marcus glanced at Kael. Kael exhaled slowly. Then he stepped forward. “Elara… the Moon didn’t just mark you.” Her heart pounded. “What does that mean?” “It means,” Kael said quietly, “you’re not just Moon-Bound.” The wind stirred through the trees again. “You’re something much rarer.” Elara’s stomach twisted. “What?” Kael’s amber eyes locked onto hers. “You’re the Moon’s chosen.” The words echoed through the clearing. Elara stared at him. “That… that doesn’t mean anything.” Marcus shook his head. “Oh, it means everything.” Kael continued. “Moon-Chosen are incredibly rare. They’re born once every few centuries.” “And what does that make me?” she whispered. Kael’s voice was soft. “The bridge between wolves and the Moon itself.” The ground seemed to tilt beneath her feet. “That’s impossible,” she said weakly. “You saw the stones react,” Marcus said. “Only Moon-Chosen can activate the ancient circles.” Elara looked down at her glowing wrist. The silver mark pulsed faintly. “I didn’t ask for this,” she whispered. “I know,” Kael said. Silence stretched between them. Then Elara asked the question that had been haunting her for days. “And what does this mean for me?” Kael hesitated. Marcus answered first. “It means every pack in existence will want you.” Her blood ran cold. Kael’s voice turned dark. “And some of them will try to kill you.” The forest suddenly felt much less peaceful. Elara’s heart pounded. “You’re saying… I’m a target now?” “Yes.” She laughed nervously. “This is insane.” Kael stepped closer. “But you’re not alone.” His presence was overwhelming this close. Warm. Protective. Dangerous. “I’ll protect you,” he said quietly. Elara met his gaze. “And if the other packs come for me?” Kael’s eyes flashed. “Then they’ll have to go through me first.” Something dangerous flickered between them. A pull stronger than logic. Stronger than fear. Elara swallowed. “That’s a lot of confidence for someone who just met me.” Kael’s voice dropped lower. “The Moon doesn’t make mistakes.” Her breath caught. For a moment neither of them moved. Then— A howl split through the forest. Not one of Kael’s wolves. Something darker. Something unfamiliar. Marcus turned sharply toward the trees. “That’s not from our territory.” Kael’s expression hardened instantly. “They’ve already found her.” Elara’s stomach dropped. “What do you mean they?” Another howl echoed closer. Then another. Multiple wolves. Closing in. Kael grabbed her hand. “We have to move. Now.” Her heart raced. “Who are they?” Kael’s voice was deadly calm. “The Shadow Pack.” Marcus swore under his breath. “They’re early.” The forest around them suddenly felt full of eyes. Watching. Hunting. Elara’s pulse thundered. And for the first time since the Moon had marked her… She truly understood how dangerous her new life had become. The howl came again. Closer this time. Elara’s chest tightened as the sound echoed through the trees. It wasn’t just a normal wolf howl—it was darker, rougher, filled with hunger and threat. Marcus swore under his breath. “They’re inside the border already.” Kael’s grip on Elara’s hand tightened. His expression had completely changed now. The calm Alpha she had seen earlier was gone. In his place stood something dangerous. Predatory. “We’re leaving,” he said firmly. Elara nodded quickly, her heart racing as they moved toward the edge of the clearing. But before they could reach the trees— A shadow moved. Then another. Three wolves stepped out from the forest. They were massive. Larger than any wolves Elara had ever seen, their fur dark as night, their eyes glowing a cold yellow. They blocked the path. Marcus stepped forward immediately, his body tense. “Shadow Pack,” he muttered. One of the wolves shifted. Bones cracked. Fur receded. Within seconds, a tall man stood in its place. He was broad-shouldered, with dark hair and sharp eyes that immediately locked onto Elara. He smiled slowly. “Well, well,” he said. “Looks like we found her.” Elara’s stomach dropped. The other two wolves stayed in their animal forms, circling slowly. Kael stepped in front of her instantly. “You’re trespassing,” he said coldly. The man shrugged. “Relax, Alpha Kael. We’re just here for the girl.” Elara felt Kael’s body stiffen. “She’s not leaving with you.” The man’s smile widened. “Oh, but she will.” The tension in the clearing snapped like a stretched wire. Marcus growled. “You picked the wrong territory.” The Shadow Pack wolf chuckled. “We’re not afraid of you.” Then his eyes flicked back to Elara. His gaze sharpened. “So that’s her,” he murmured. Elara felt suddenly exposed under that stare. Like prey. “She doesn’t look like much,” he continued. Kael’s voice dropped dangerously low. “Watch your mouth.” But the man ignored him. “Hard to believe the Moon would choose a human,” he said thoughtfully. “But power smells different.” His nose twitched slightly. “Yes,” he said quietly. “I can feel it.” Elara’s heart pounded. “You’re insane,” she said. The man laughed. “No, sweetheart.” He gestured to the glowing mark on her wrist. “You’re the one everyone’s going to fight over.” Before Elara could respond— Kael moved. He shifted so fast she barely saw it happen. One second he was human. The next— A massive black wolf stood in front of her. His fur shimmered in the sunlight like dark metal. His amber eyes burned with fury. Elara stared in awe. Even the Shadow Pack wolves seemed momentarily cautious. Marcus shifted too, his brown wolf form stepping beside Kael. The two Alphas stood shoulder to shoulder. The Shadow Pack man sighed. “Really? We’re doing this?” Then he nodded at the wolves beside him. The attack began instantly. One of the wolves lunged forward with terrifying speed. Kael met it head-on. Their bodies slammed together with a brutal thud. Elara stumbled backward as the two wolves rolled across the clearing, teeth snapping, claws tearing through fur. Marcus tackled the second wolf. The clearing erupted into chaos. Elara’s pulse thundered in her ears. She didn’t know what to do. Didn’t know where to move. The Shadow Pack man watched calmly. “Stay where you are,” he told her casually. Elara glared at him. “Go to hell.” He chuckled. “I’d rather take you with me.” He stepped forward. Elara backed away instinctively. But then— Something inside her flared. A surge of energy shot through her body. The mark on her wrist began to glow again. Bright. Silver. The man stopped. His eyes widened. “Oh,” he whispered. “So it’s true.” The air around Elara suddenly felt charged. The ancient stones in the clearing began humming again. The ground vibrated beneath her feet. “What’s happening?” she whispered. Power surged through her veins like liquid lightning. The Moon Circle was reacting again. And this time— It was stronger. The Shadow Pack man’s smile faded. “Well,” he muttered. “That’s new.” Elara gasped as light spilled from the mark on her wrist. Her vision blurred. Images flashed again. Wolves. Moonlight. Ancient voices whispering through time. Her knees buckled. The power inside her exploded outward. A shockwave burst from the center of the clearing. The stones flared with silver light. The force threw the Shadow Pack wolves backward like rag dolls. Kael and Marcus both stumbled but managed to stay on their feet. The Shadow Pack man slammed into a tree. The clearing went silent. Elara collapsed to her knees. Her body trembled. “What… did I do?” Kael shifted back to human form instantly and rushed to her side. “Elara!” She looked up at him weakly. “I didn’t mean to…” Kael’s hands gripped her shoulders. “You just activated Moon energy.” Marcus stared at the glowing stones in disbelief. “I’ve never seen power like that.” The Shadow Pack wolves struggled to stand. Their leader wiped blood from his lip as he slowly got to his feet. His expression had changed. The arrogance was gone. Now there was something else in his eyes. Fear. “Well,” he said quietly. “That confirms it.” Kael stood protectively in front of Elara again. “Leave.” The man studied Elara carefully. Then he laughed softly. “Oh, we will.” He gestured to the wolves behind him. “But this isn’t over.” His gaze locked onto Elara. “Now every pack will come looking for you.” Elara’s heart sank. The Shadow Pack wolves disappeared into the forest moments later. The clearing fell silent again. Kael turned back to Elara. “You okay?” She nodded weakly. “I think so.” Marcus exhaled slowly. “Everything just changed.” Elara frowned. “What do you mean?” Marcus looked at the glowing stones. “Every pack in the region probably felt that surge.” Her stomach dropped. “You’re kidding.” Kael shook his head. “No.” Elara looked down at her glowing wrist. The silver light slowly faded. Her voice was barely a whisper. “So what happens now?” Kael’s eyes softened slightly. “Now,” he said quietly, “we prepare for war.” The wind moved through the trees again. And somewhere deep in the forest— Another distant howl answered.
