Chapter 8
The Hidden Pack
The pendant's glow faded, leaving the cabin in complete silence.
Lyra's fingers trembled as she clutched the silver heirloom against her chest.
"My mother..." she whispered. "She was alive long enough to leave me that message."
Kael stood slowly, hiding the pain etched across his face. Although he tried to appear strong, the poison was clearly taking its toll.
"We have to leave," he said.
Lyra looked up. "Now?"
"They know where we are."
Almost on cue, a raven landed on the windowsill. Its feathers were as black as midnight, and tied to its leg was a strip of crimson cloth.
Kael's expression hardened.
"The Blood King's scouts."
He untied the cloth.
Written in dark ink were only five words.
YOU CAN'T HIDE HER.
The message dissolved into black ash.
"They're getting closer," Kael muttered.
---
Before sunrise, the pair slipped into the mountains.
For hours they climbed narrow trails hidden beneath ancient pine trees. Lyra struggled to keep up, but Kael never complained. Whenever she stumbled, he silently offered his hand.
By noon they reached a massive waterfall.
"There isn't a path," Lyra said, staring at the rushing water.
"There is."
Kael pressed his palm against the rock.
Silver symbols flared to life.
The waterfall split down the middle.
Behind it stood a gigantic stone gate carved with wolves howling beneath three full moons.
Lyra gasped.
"It's beautiful..."
"It has been hidden for centuries," Kael replied.
"The Mooncrest Pack."
The gates slowly opened.
Inside was an enormous valley unlike anything Lyra had imagined.
Stone houses lined crystal-clear streams.
Children chased wolf pups through flower-filled fields.
Warriors trained in a massive arena while elders gathered beneath an ancient oak tree.
As Kael entered, everyone stopped.
One by one...
They bowed.
"Welcome home, Alpha."
Lyra stared in disbelief.
"So... you're really their Alpha."
Kael gave a slight nod.
"But this place isn't safe anymore."
The villagers noticed Lyra standing beside him.
Curious whispers spread through the crowd.
"Is that her?"
"The girl from the prophecy?"
"She looks... human."
An older woman stepped forward.
Her silver hair flowed down her back, and gentle golden eyes studied Lyra carefully.
She smiled.
"You have your mother's eyes."
Lyra froze.
"You knew her?"
"I did."
The woman's smile faded.
"And I watched the night she gave you away."
Tears filled Lyra's eyes.
"You were there?"
"I promised your mother I would protect you if you ever returned."
The elder bowed deeply.
"Welcome home... Your Majesty."
The entire valley fell to one knee.
Lyra immediately stepped backward.
"No..."
"I'm not a queen."
"I don't even know who I am!"
Suddenly—
A deafening horn echoed across the valley.
One blast.
Then another.
Kael spun toward the northern wall.
"Impossible..."
A guard came running.
"Alpha!"
"They've breached the outer barrier!"
"What?"
"No army should have found this place!"
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"There really is a traitor."
The ground shook violently.
An explosion rocked the valley.
The northern gate burst apart.
Smoke billowed into the air.
Through it marched dozens of armored wolves.
At their head was a towering man dressed in crimson armor.
His hair was black as night, and his scarlet eyes burned with hatred.
He carried a sword forged from black crystal.
"So this is where you've been hiding," he said with a cruel smile.
His gaze settled on Lyra.
"There you are..."
"My Queen."
Lyra's blood ran cold.
"I don't know you."
"No."
He laughed softly.
"But I know everything about you."
Kael stepped between them.
"Ronan."
"So we meet again."
The stranger smirked.
"It's been a long time, Silver Alpha."
The two men stared at each other, their killing intent filling the valley.
The air itself seemed to tremble.
Ronan pointed his sword at Lyra.
"Hand her over."
"And I'll spare your pack."
Kael answered without hesitation.
"Never."
Ronan sighed dramatically.
"A pity."
He raised his sword toward the sky.
The black crystal embedded in its blade began to glow.
Dark clouds swallowed the sun.
A blood-red moon appeared in the middle of the afternoon.
Gasps echoed throughout the valley.
"The Blood Moon..." an elder whispered.
"It shouldn't be possible..."
Ronan smiled.
"The first seal has already been broken."
He looked directly at Lyra.
"The next time we meet..."
"You won't have a choice."
With a wave of his hand, he and his warriors vanished into swirling black mist.
The blood-red moon faded.
Silence returned.
Kael slowly lowered his guard.
His face had turned pale.
The elder looked at him in horror.
"Alpha..."
"You know what this means."
Kael nodded grimly.
"The Blood King has begun the awakening."
He turned to Lyra.
"From today onward, your training begins."
"Because the next time Ronan comes..."
"He won't be coming alone."
