Chapter Seven: The Second Heart

1116 Words
The city was almost dead after the battle. The sky was gray, the ground littered with broken glass shards reflecting the faces of fallen warriors. The wind whispered between the ruins, carrying a sound that felt like mourning. Lyrin walked through the wreckage, her hands bloodied, the bow she carried snapped in half. Each step dragged a memory with it— The screams of the guardians, the flash of the seal that had saved them for a moment, and Salim’s last smile before it vanished into the smoke. She stopped where she’d seen him last. The dirt was mixed with traces of blue light—the same glow left by Salim’s blood. She knelt, touched the spot with her finger, and whispered in a broken voice, “He was here… Orphin took him.” Her lips trembled. Anger and grief twisted together inside her until she couldn’t tell which one hurt more. --- The Abduction After the battle ended and the army of shadows retreated, Lyrin had thought Orphin had withdrawn with them. But she didn’t know his retreat was only a distraction. Orphin had slipped through the smoke, silent as mist, and found Salim unconscious, the seal on his arm glowing weakly. He stood over him, golden eyes gleaming with cunning, and whispered in a voice that sounded like a melody, “The blood sleeps… but it won’t sleep forever.” He drew a black circle in the air with his finger. The circle opened like a small portal and swallowed Salim whole before a sound could escape. The air sealed behind them. The city noticed nothing. The k********g was silent—precise—like a ritual of dark magic. --- Lyrin’s Resolve Hours later, Lyrin knew he was gone. She sat on the edge of a crumbling wall and pulled from her pocket a small blue crystal— a Spirit Tracking Stone, used by the Guardians when one of their own is lost. Closing her eyes, she focused her energy. The stone pulsed faintly, releasing waves of blue light. A blurred vision formed before her—Salim bound to a throne of shadows, surrounded by glowing red runes. Behind him stood Orphin, hand reaching toward the seal on his arm. “He’s trying to force the seal open…” she gasped. “That fool—he’ll burn himself alive!” --- Within the Shadows Salim was slowly waking. The air was thick, heavy— The place was alive, breathing, like the inside of some vast creature. Chains made of shadow coiled around him, and the seal on his arm flickered weakly. Then he heard Orphin’s whisper beside him: “Your power… it’s pure. But you don’t know how to use it. Let me show you the way.” Salim opened his eyes, looking at him with defiance and fear. “Your way is darkness… and I won’t follow it.” Orphin chuckled softly, tracing lines of magic through the air. The runes connected the seal to the center of the chamber. “You have no choice, Eyadno. Armania is collapsing. But with your blood, I can rebuild it—rewrite the laws themselves.” The chains tightened, and blue light began to flow from Salim’s veins into the circle. He screamed from the pain, but even through it, he lifted his head and gasped, “Laws… can’t be written by force!” Suddenly the light surged backward, exploding in a burst of blue sparks. Orphin staggered, staring at his burned hand. Shock filled his face. “His blood… it rejects me! It refuses control—it’s alive!” --- Lyrin’s Plan Meanwhile, Lyrin worked quickly amid the ruins. She gathered three shards of enchanted glass, mixing them with the ashes of Salim’s blue light. Drawing a small circle, she murmured, “I can’t fight him head-on… I need a channel.” A dim glow formed, and a spectral figure of an elderly woman appeared before her—clad in white robes. “Lyrin… what have you done?!” the woman scolded. Lyrin bowed respectfully. “Lady Azra, Orphin has taken the Shifter. I must bring him back before the balance breaks.” Azra shook her head gravely. “Orphin has grown stronger. He’s no longer just a sorcerer—he bears the Curse of the First Shadow. If he opens the seal by force, the barrier between worlds will shatter.” Lyrin looked down, determined. “I know. That’s why I must stop him first. I’ll use the Blood Mirror.” Azra’s eyes widened. “The Blood Mirror?! Impossible! It will cost you your life!” Lyrin’s voice was steady. “I don’t care. I’m a Guardian… and he’s my responsibility.” Azra’s image faded, leaving her alone among the ruins. But Lyrin knew exactly what she had to do. --- Orphin’s Struggle Inside the chamber, Orphin tried again to subdue the seal. Each time he touched it, the energy struck him back harder. Salim, though barely conscious, managed a weak smile. “You can’t control what doesn’t belong to you.” Orphin clenched his teeth. “You foolish boy. You have no idea what you carry. Your power will destroy all worlds if it remains unchecked. Only I can contain it!” Salim answered through his pain, voice trembling but firm, “Maybe… but freedom is worth more than the order you force.” Suddenly, the walls trembled. Orphin’s golden eyes narrowed. “Damn it… she’s here!” --- The Confrontation Lyrin burst through the portal of shadow, her body half light, half smoke. She shouted, “Orphin! Let him go!” Orphin smiled coldly, summoning blades of darkness that floated around him. “You risk far too much, Lyrin.” She drew a new bow made of pure light. “I’m not afraid of shadows.” Light clashed with darkness, filling the chamber with violent flashes. Salim struggled to free himself as the battle raged, blue light leaking from his seal like fire. Lyrin shouted, “Salim! Focus! Don’t scatter your energy!” Orphin sneered, “You’re all fools! He doesn’t even understand what he is!” Before he could strike again, a massive explosion erupted— a collision of blue light and black flame. --- The Uncertain End When the dust settled, the chamber was empty. No sign of Orphin. No sign of Salim. No sign of Lyrin. Only a faint voice echoed through the shadows: “The second heart has awakened… and the choice draws near.” The air thickened. The world itself began to unravel like a dream collapsing. And for a brief moment, a fragment of shadow reflected Salim’s image— his eyes, half blue… and half golden.
