The garden behind the studio became my favorite place. Vanessa had been right to suggest it. It was quiet. Green. A small patch of peace in the middle of the city. I planted flowers I remembered from my mother's windowsill. Marigolds. Jasmine. A small rosebush that bloomed every spring. "It's beautiful," Julian said, when he saw it finished. "It's hers." "Your mother's?" "I wanted to bring her with me." I knelt beside the roses. "She never had a garden. She never had anything of her own." "Now she does." I looked up at him. "Thank you for understanding." "I don't understand." He knelt beside me. "I just love you." --- The foundation held its first annual gala that fall. We raised more money than I'd hoped.
