CHAPTER 36: THE FALL OF THE MOON TEMPLE The moment Aria stepped back into the ruined halls of the Moon Temple, every eye turned toward her. The silver staff in her hand radiated an ancient light that chased away the shadows clinging to the broken walls. Moonstone embedded at its peak pulsed in rhythm with her heartbeat, and the symbols etched along its length shimmered like stars across a midnight sky. Wolves paused in their battles to stare at her in stunned silence. Even the Blood Hunters lowered their weapons for a brief moment. Kael remained beside her despite the poison still lingering beneath his skin, his amber eyes fixed on her with something that resembled awe. Lucien’s breath caught in his throat. “The Heart of Luna,” he whispered. “The sacred relic of the First Queen.” Seraphine tightened her grip around her silver blades, unable to hide the uncertainty in her expression. “Then Varok won’t stop until he claims it,” she said grimly. As if summoned by her words, the temple trembled violently, and a deafening roar shook the sacred halls. Varok emerged through the collapsing archway like the embodiment of vengeance itself. Black smoke coiled around his enormous form while silver scars burned across his flesh, remnants of battles fought centuries ago. His glowing eyes locked onto the staff in Aria’s hands. For the first time since awakening, genuine fury twisted his features. “They gave it to you,” he growled, his voice reverberating through the chamber. “After everything they did…” The floor cracked beneath his feet as he stepped forward. “Do you know what that relic truly represents?” Aria tightened her hold on the Heart of Luna but remained steady beneath his gaze. “Hope,” she answered. Varok laughed bitterly. “No. Betrayal.” His claws sliced through the air, summoning dozens of spirit creatures from the darkness. “That staff belonged to the queen who condemned my kind to eternal imprisonment.” His pain echoed behind every word. For the first time, Aria didn’t see only a monster before her. She saw a guardian broken by centuries of grief and rage. Battle erupted once again. Darius charged forward with a fierce battle cry while Elara fought at his side, their wolves moving in perfect synchronization. Seraphine led the Hunters into the chaos, silver blades flashing as they cut through shadow creatures swarming the temple. Lucien remained near the surviving records, refusing to abandon the truths they had fought to protect. Kael launched himself at Varok despite the weakness threatening to consume him. Their clash sent shockwaves through the collapsing chamber. Varok easily overpowered him, hurling the Alpha across the ruined floor. Aria’s heart seized through the mating bond as Kael crashed into a broken pillar. Pain flooded their connection. She felt his fear, not for himself, but for her. “Aria…” he gasped, struggling to stand. “Don’t let anger decide for you.” The warning struck deep. The Heart of Luna pulsed against her palm, as though waiting for her choice. Varok turned his burning gaze toward her. “You still don’t understand,” he said, advancing through the battlefield. “I protected the Luna Queens long before the war. I fought for them. I believed in them.” The spirit creatures slowed around him, responding to the sorrow beneath his fury. “Then fear changed everything. They feared rebellion. They feared losing peace. They feared losing control. And so they chose chains.” His voice cracked for the first time. “I watched brothers slaughter brothers. I watched innocent spirits burned alive. I watched the women I swore to protect become strangers.” Silence spread through the chamber despite the ongoing battle. Aria remembered the visions from the Chamber of Echoes. The queens hadn’t begun as tyrants. Fear had transformed them. Tears stung her eyes as she met Varok’s gaze. “You were betrayed,” she whispered. “Yes,” Varok replied. “And so will you be.” Before Aria could answer, a tremendous explosion rocked the Moon Temple. Massive sections of the ceiling collapsed as silver flames extinguished one by one. Lucien looked upward in horror. “The temple is dying!” he shouted. Cracks raced across the sacred floor while moonlight poured through the fractured stone overhead. The Heart of Luna suddenly blazed brighter than ever before. Ancient voices echoed inside Aria’s mind. Balance must be restored. She glanced toward her companions. Darius and Elara fought to protect one another. Seraphine stood shoulder to shoulder with wolves she once hunted. Kael struggled to remain standing despite unimaginable pain. None of them were bound by destiny. They were choosing to fight together. The realization settled into Aria’s heart like dawn breaking through darkness. Fear had destroyed the past because people had allowed it to guide their choices. But love, loyalty, and trust were choices too. As the Moon Temple began its final collapse, Aria raised the Heart of Luna high above her head. Silver light erupted throughout the chamber, forcing both wolves and spirit creatures to halt. Varok shielded his eyes against the brilliance. The ancient relic responded to her conviction, wrapping the battlefield in moonlit warmth. “I won’t deny the mistakes of my ancestors,” Aria declared, her voice carrying through the crumbling halls. “I won’t pretend the pain they caused never happened.” She looked directly at Varok. “But I refuse to believe suffering is all we’re capable of becoming.” The Heart of Luna pulsed once, sending waves of silver energy through every living soul present. Wolves straightened. Hunters lowered their weapons. Even the spirit creatures hesitated. “I choose differently,” Aria said firmly. Behind her, the sacred walls of the Moon Temple gave way as stone and moonlight rained from above. The ancient sanctuary that had guarded centuries of truth was falling. And with Varok’s wounded gaze fixed upon her, Aria understood that the final battle for both worlds had only just begun.
