CHAPTER 32: THE HALL OF FORGOTTEN TRUTH The massive stone doors of the Moon Temple groaned as they opened completely, revealing a staircase that spiraled deep beneath the earth. Ancient silver flames ignited along the walls one by one, illuminating carvings that depicted wolves bowing before women crowned in moonlight. Aria stood frozen at the entrance, unable to ignore the strange familiarity settling inside her chest. The temple felt alive, as though it had been waiting centuries for her return. “This place recognizes your blood,” Lucien whispered in awe. Even Seraphine appeared unsettled as she studied the ancient symbols. Kael stepped closer to Aria despite the poison weakening him, his shoulder brushing against hers. “Whatever happens down there,” he murmured, “you won’t face it alone.” The simple promise eased some of the fear tightening around her heart. Taking a deep breath, Aria stepped across the threshold. The silver flames burned brighter in response. The deeper they descended, the more extraordinary the temple became. The walls were lined with murals illustrating the rise of the Luna Queens. Some depicted rulers healing wounded warriors and blessing newborn wolves beneath the full moon. Others portrayed scenes of celebration and unity among the packs. But as they ventured farther into the temple, the images changed. Joy gave way to conflict. Wolves were shown kneeling with expressions of fear rather than devotion. Silver chains wrapped around their wrists while Luna Queens sat upon thrones with cold, unreadable eyes. Aria stopped walking. Her stomach twisted painfully. “Why would they record this?” she asked softly. “Because history remembers both greatness and failure,” Lucien answered. Seraphine crossed her arms. “I warned you that the truth wouldn’t be pleasant.” Before Aria could respond, a sharp pain exploded behind her eyes. Another vision seized her mind. She found herself standing in a grand hall illuminated by moonlight. Hundreds of wolves knelt before a silver throne while a young Luna Queen stared down at them with tears in her eyes. “I never wanted this,” the queen whispered. “But they fear weakness.” Beside her stood a tall spirit guardian with glowing silver markings etched across his skin. “Then remind them what true strength means,” he urged. The vision shifted violently. The same queen now stood over a battlefield soaked in blood. Fear and desperation twisted her beautiful face. “If obedience brings peace,” she said brokenly, “then perhaps peace is worth the cost.” The kneeling wolves lowered their heads. Silver chains tightened around them. Aria gasped as the vision ended. She stumbled backward, nearly collapsing. Kael caught her immediately. “What did you see?” he asked. Tears filled her eyes. “I think… I think the Luna Queens didn’t start as monsters.” The group eventually entered an enormous chamber known as the Hall of Forgotten Truths. Thousands of crystal pillars lined the room, each containing swirling silver memories preserved through ancient magic. At the center stood a pedestal carved from pure moonstone. Resting atop it was an ornate silver crown embedded with glowing gemstones. The moment Aria approached, the entire chamber awakened. Crystals illuminated simultaneously, flooding the hall with visions from the past. Wolves and spirits fighting side by side. Luna Queens blessing their people. Betrayals. Executions. Wars. Aria reached toward the crown before Lucien grabbed her wrist. “Be careful,” he warned. But the crown reacted instantly to her presence. A pulse of silver light burst outward, forcing everyone back. The voice of a woman echoed throughout the chamber. “To claim the truth is to bear its burden.” Aria’s heart raced. She recognized the voice even though she had never heard it before. It belonged to her mother. “Selene?” Aria whispered. A translucent figure slowly materialized above the pedestal. Selene Nightshade appeared exactly as Aria remembered from childhood memories, graceful, kind, and beautiful beneath flowing silver robes. Tears immediately blurred Aria’s vision. “Mom?” The spirit smiled sadly. “My little moon.” Aria’s knees nearly gave out. Years of grief and unanswered questions crashed over her all at once. “Why did you leave me?” she choked out. Selene’s expression filled with regret. “I didn’t choose to leave you. I chose to protect you.” The room fell silent. Even Seraphine looked stunned. Selene turned her gaze toward Kael. “Thank you for keeping your promise.” Kael lowered his head. Aria stared between them. “You knew each other?” Selene nodded. “There are truths you still need to understand. But first, you must remember one thing.” Her silver eyes locked onto Aria’s. “Power itself is not evil. Fear is what corrupts it.” Before Aria could ask another question, the temple trembled violently. A deafening roar echoed through the sacred halls. Cracks spread across the chamber walls as darkness seeped through the silver floor like black smoke. Varok’s laughter reverberated throughout the temple. “Did you truly believe I would allow this?” his voice thundered. The crystal pillars shattered one by one, releasing chaotic energy into the chamber. Wolves immediately shifted into defensive positions while Seraphine unsheathed her silver blades. Kael staggered as another wave of poison surged through his body, but he forced himself in front of Aria. The spirit of Selene looked toward the spreading darkness with sorrow. “He has arrived sooner than expected,” she whispered. Aria turned toward the collapsing entrance, silver energy igniting around her hands once more. Beyond the shadows, glowing eyes slowly emerged. Varok had found them. And this time, he wasn’t alone.
