CHAPTER 3: THE FIRST NIGHT PF AWAKENING
The cabin was quiet, but not empty. The fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting flickering shadows across the wooden walls, while outside, the Pennsylvania forest whispered in the wind. I lay on the small bed, my heart pounding, my hands still glowing faintly silver from the events earlier.
I could feel my wolf stirring inside me. She was restless, angry, and confused. I had spent years suppressing her instincts to fit into the pack, to be someone Kael wanted. But now… now she was free, unleashed, and stronger than I had ever allowed her to be.
Sleep didn’t come easily. Every time my eyes closed, I saw the scene in the Blackthorn mansion replay in my mind: Kael’s cold, gray eyes. Selena’s smug smile. The laughter and whispers of the pack as I was rejected.
I swallowed hard, pressing my hands against my chest. The warmth inside me pulsed again, strong, almost alive.
You are not prey, the voice whispered again, low and ancient.
I shivered. The voice had not returned to my mind fully, but its presence lingered like a shadow in the corners of my consciousness.
Lucien had said I needed rest. But how could I rest when the world had turned upside down in a single night? When the Alpha I had trusted, the mate I had dreamed of, had turned his back on me?
I rose from the bed, pacing the cabin, my bare feet brushing the cold wooden floor. Outside, the forest seemed alive, almost watching. The silver light of the moon filtered through the windows, illuminating the frost on the ground. It was peaceful. Yet I knew the forest was never truly safe. Not for someone like me.
I thought back to the rogues in the clearing, the ones who had lunged at me without hesitation. The power that had erupted from my chest, silver, radiant, and terrifying, was not entirely under my control. I had never felt anything like it before. And as much as it scared me, it also exhilarated me.
A sudden sound made me freeze. The door creaked softly. I turned, eyes wide.
“Stay calm,” I whispered to myself.
The shadow of a figure moved in the doorway. Lucien stepped inside, his amber eyes glowing faintly in the dim firelight.
“You’re awake,” he said softly. His tone was calm, but there was something dangerous about it, as if even the slightest wrong move could provoke a predator.
“I couldn’t sleep,” I admitted. “I… I don’t know what’s happening to me.”
He nodded slowly, stepping closer. “That is the awakening. You were rejected tonight, and yet the Moon Goddess marked you. That power is not punishment. It is inheritance. And you have no time to waste.”
I looked at him, confused. “Inheritance? What do you mean?”
Lucien crouched slightly, resting a hand on the floor. “You are the last of the Luna Queen bloodline. Your power is ancient, tied to the old ways of the wolves. The ones who walked before the Alphas. The ones who ruled not with fear, but with force, wisdom, and destiny. That power has been dormant… until tonight.”
I sank onto the edge of the bed, my head spinning. “Dormant…? So that light… the silver glow… that was me?”
He nodded. “It is only the beginning. You have only just scratched the surface of what you are capable of. But you must learn control. Power without control can destroy you, and everyone around you.”
I swallowed hard. “And the rogues?”
“They were attracted to it. Power like yours cannot go unnoticed. Tonight, they fled because they sensed it, but others will come. Stronger, smarter, more dangerous.”
A cold chill ran down my spine. “So… I’m a target?”
Lucien’s gaze hardened. “Yes. And your enemies are closer than you think.”
I sat back, trying to absorb everything he was telling me. Bloodline. Power. Enemies. A destiny I had never asked for. And yet, somewhere deep in my chest, a spark ignited. Not fear. Not despair. Determination.
I would survive.
I would rise.
And I would never allow Kael or anyone else to humiliate me again.
Lucien watched me carefully. “Your first lesson will begin at dawn,” he said. “But tonight, you must understand one thing, your wolf will guide you, but she is not you. You must decide who you will be. Weak and obedient, or strong and unyielding.”
I clenched my fists. “I… I will be strong.”
He nodded, as if he had expected nothing less. “Good. But strength alone is not enough. You must learn to sense danger, to manipulate the forest, to strike before your enemies realize what has happened.”
I nodded slowly, absorbing every word. It was overwhelming, yes, but also exhilarating. For the first time in my life, I felt… alive.
The fire crackled, and silence fell between us. For a long moment, I thought he might leave me alone, but instead, Lucien spoke again.
“There is one more thing,” he said, his voice lower now, almost a whisper. “Kael Blackthorn knows you exist. He may think you are gone, weak, and broken. But you are neither. When you master your power, he will realize the mistake he made.”
The words ignited something deep within me, a mix of anger, pride, and something darker: revenge.
I closed my eyes, letting the warmth of the fire seep into me. My wolf stirred, soft and curious now, no longer afraid. The silver light within me flickered faintly in the quiet of the cabin, a gentle reminder of the force that slept inside.
I could feel it… and I knew it was only the beginning.
Hours passed, though I wasn’t sure how long. My mind spun with the memory of Kael’s rejection, Selena’s triumphant smile, and the strange awakening in the forest. Sleep was elusive, yet I felt the pull of rest. The fire warmed my frozen limbs, and the forest outside whispered a lullaby of wind and frost.
Finally, exhaustion overcame me, and I drifted into a deep, dreamless sleep.
I woke before dawn. A faint silver light filtered through the frost-covered windows, illuminating the cabin with an ethereal glow. My body ached from the cold, but my mind was alert.
Lucien was already awake, standing by the window, observing the forest. His amber eyes reflected the first rays of morning.
“Time,” he said simply.
I nodded, still groggy. “Time for…?”
“Your first lesson. You cannot survive by instinct alone. You must learn to fight, to hunt, to sense the forest, and to awaken the true power of your bloodline.”
I shivered, both from the chill and anticipation. This was the moment that would define me. I could no longer be the weak girl who had been rejected by her mate. That Aria Nightshade had died in the Blackthorn mansion last night.
The new Aria would rise.
Lucien led me out of the cabin into the cold Pennsylvania forest. The snow crunched beneath my feet. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine, earth, and frost.
“Feel the forest,” he instructed. “Every sound, every smell, every movement is alive. Listen.”
I closed my eyes and focused. The rustle of leaves, the distant gurgle of a creek, the subtle shift of wind through branches, all came into focus. My wolf stirred inside me, recognizing the instincts she had once relied on but now enhanced by something far stronger.
A movement to my left caught my attention. A deer, its breath visible in the cold morning air, stepped cautiously through the underbrush. Another movement, smaller, sharper, was barely perceptible, hidden behind a tree. My senses tingled with awareness I had never experienced.
Lucien watched silently. “Good. You are learning quickly. But control is key. Focus your power. Control it, and it will become a weapon. Lose control, and it will consume you.”
I nodded. My chest burned with the warmth of power, the pulse of something ancient and dangerous within me.
Suddenly, a howl echoed through the trees. Sharp, threatening, urgent.
Lucien’s eyes narrowed. “You see? They are already aware of you. The rogues tonight were only the beginning. Others will come, wolves who have been waiting for centuries for your awakening. And they will not hesitate to strike.”
I felt my pulse quicken. Fear was still there, yes, but it was tinged with excitement. The first night of my awakening had passed. But this morning… this morning was the true beginning.
I looked up at the rising sun, the pale Pennsylvania light spilling over the frost-covered trees. And I promised myself, my wolf, and the power awakening within me:
I would survive.
I would rise.
And one day, the name Aria Nightshade would be feared, respected, and obeyed by every Alpha, every pack, every creature who dared to underestimate me.
For I was no longer the weak girl who had been rejected.
I was the last heir of the Luna Queen bloodline.
And this forest, this land, was only the first step in my rise to power.
