CHAPTER 35: THROUGH THE HEART OF DARKNESS The Moon Temple groaned around them as if the ancient structure itself was crying out in pain. Massive cracks split the marble floors while chunks of stone crashed from the ceiling, sending clouds of dust into the sacred halls. Beyond the shattered entrance, Varok’s army advanced like a living nightmare. Spirit creatures poured through the corridors in endless waves, their bodies woven from black smoke and silver fire. Wolves immediately shifted into defensive positions while Seraphine barked orders to the remaining Hunters. Lucien clutched the rescued crystal records tightly against his chest, refusing to abandon centuries of history to destruction. At the center of the chaos stood Aria. Silver energy danced around her fingertips, steady and controlled beneath her skin. For the first time since discovering the truth about her bloodline, fear no longer dictated her actions. The fear remained, but so did something stronger, purpose. “We hold this chamber,” she commanded, her voice clear and unwavering. “No one gets left behind.” The battle erupted instantly. Elara launched herself into the nearest spirit creature, claws slicing through black mist while Darius fought beside her with fierce determination. Seraphine moved like a shadow through the battlefield, her enchanted blades glowing silver each time they struck an enemy. Despite years of hatred between Hunters and wolves, they fought together with perfect coordination. Kael, weakened by the poison spreading through his veins, still refused to retreat. His wolf surged beneath his skin as he tore through the creatures threatening Aria’s position. Every movement cost him. Every breath seemed painful. Through the mating bond, Aria felt the agony he tried desperately to conceal. She glanced toward him just in time to see him stumble. Her heart lurched. Before another creature could strike, silver light burst from her hands and destroyed it instantly. “Kael!” she shouted. He looked toward her and offered a faint smile. “Still standing,” he replied hoarsely. “Don’t look at me like that.” Tears burned behind her eyes. “You don’t get to die,” she snapped. “Not today.” As the fighting intensified, Lucien called Aria toward the far side of the chamber. Hidden behind fallen stone lay another ancient doorway covered in Luna markings. “These symbols weren’t visible before,” he explained breathlessly. Aria pressed her hand against the cold surface. Instantly, silver runes illuminated beneath her touch. The wall trembled before slowly sliding open to reveal a narrow passageway descending deeper beneath the temple. Ancient moonlight shimmered within the darkness beyond. Lucien’s eyes widened. “The Chamber of Echoes,” he whispered. “According to the records, only the Luna Queens could enter.” Seraphine glanced toward the opening before returning her attention to the battlefield. “Then whatever answers you need are inside,” she said sharply. “Because we won’t survive much longer out here.” Aria hesitated. The sounds of battle echoed behind her. Her people needed her. But deep within her soul, she understood that the chamber held something essential to stopping Varok. Kael appeared beside her, breathing heavily. “Go,” he urged quietly. “We’ll hold the line.” Reluctantly, Aria stepped into the hidden passage. The doorway sealed behind her, muting the sounds of war outside. The corridor stretched endlessly beneath silver flames suspended in midair. The farther she walked, the stronger the ancient energy became. Memories flooded her mind without warning. She saw Luna Queens kneeling before the Moon Goddess. She saw spirit guardians swearing loyalty to protect balance between worlds. She saw ordinary wolves laughing beneath moonlit skies before fear and ambition poisoned everything they had built. Eventually, the passage opened into a breathtaking chamber unlike anything Aria had ever imagined. At its center floated an enormous silver sphere surrounded by streams of moonlight. Ancient voices echoed throughout the room. “Welcome, Final Luna,” they whispered in unison. Aria stared upward as spectral figures emerged from the light, every Luna Queen who had come before her. Some wore expressions of sorrow. Others looked ashamed. One stepped forward, her silver eyes filled with regret. “We failed,” she admitted softly. “We allowed fear to transform protection into control.” Aria listened as the spirits revealed the complete truth of the Great War. The Luna bloodline had never been created to rule. They were guardians of balance between the spirit realm and the mortal world, gifted with influence to unite others during times of crisis. But when fear of losing peace took root, some Luna Queens used their gifts to enforce obedience instead of earning trust. Varok and the spirit guardians had opposed them. Betrayal followed. War consumed both worlds. “The curse was never in our blood,” another queen confessed. “It lived in the choices we made.” Tears slipped down Aria’s cheeks as understanding settled deep within her heart. She wasn’t destined to repeat history. She wasn’t born evil. She had always possessed the freedom to choose differently. The first queen approached her carrying a silver staff crowned with moonstone. “The Heart of Luna,” she said. “Take it, and remember what true leadership requires.” Aria accepted the staff as warmth spread through her body. The silver sphere shattered into countless stars that flowed into her skin. The chamber trembled violently as Varok’s roar echoed through the temple. The hidden doorway reopened, revealing Kael kneeling just beyond the threshold. Blood stained his clothes, and the poison had spread across half his throat. Yet his amber eyes searched desperately for her. “Aria,” he rasped. “He’s coming.” The Heart of Luna glowed brightly within her grasp as she rushed to his side. Through the mating bond, she felt his exhaustion, his pain, and the unwavering love he carried for her despite everything. Carefully, she touched his face. Silver energy flowed from her fingertips into his skin, slowing the poison’s advance. Kael’s eyes widened in shock. “You healed me,” he whispered. Aria smiled through her tears. “No,” she replied softly. “I chose to save someone I love.” Another deafening crash shook the temple as Varok’s fury drew closer. Tightening her grip around the silver staff, Aria turned toward the darkness awaiting them beyond the ruined halls. The Final Luna Queen had finally learned the truth. Now, she would decide how the story ended.
