CHAPTER 5: THE ROGUE PACK The forest was dark now, thick shadows stretching under the light of a rising moon. The Pennsylvania pines groaned in the wind, and the ground beneath my feet was slick with frost and fallen leaves. I had been training with Lucien for hours, learning to channel the silver energy in my chest, and to control it like a weapon. Yet despite my progress, my heart was pounding, not from exertion, but from the looming sense of danger. Lucien had been silent for most of the day, guiding me without words, letting my instincts lead me. But now he stopped suddenly, raising a hand. “Something approaches,” he said softly. His amber eyes scanned the shadows, narrowing. I froze beside him. My wolf stirred, ears flicking, muscles tensing. The forest had become alive again, the quiet, predatory type of alive. Lucien pointed to a faint trail along the forest floor. “Rogues. Not like the ones you faced before. These are organized. They hunt in packs, coordinated, and they’ve smelled your power.” My stomach knotted. “How many?” “Too many,” he replied, his voice calm but his body rigid. “You are ready, but this will be your first true battle. Control your wolf, focus your energy, and trust your instincts.” The sound of leaves snapping reached us first, three quick, deliberate movements. Then more followed, like an advancing tide. I counted five at first. Then seven. Then a dozen shadows emerged between the trunks. Wolves, or humans? My senses couldn’t discern exactly, they were something in between, powerful, aggressive, dangerous. Lucien placed a hand on my shoulder. “Focus. This is not just about strength. This is about control. If you panic, they will kill you.” I inhaled deeply, feeling the warmth flare inside me. The silver energy pulsed, my wolf stirring in response, and I centered myself, letting instinct and power align. The first rogue lunged. Its fur was matted, its eyes yellow with hunger. I didn’t think. I let the energy flow. Silver light erupted from my chest in a controlled burst. The wolf was thrown back, landing heavily on the frozen ground. “Good,” Lucien murmured. “Control. Precision. Not force alone.” The remaining rogues circled us, snarling, testing our defenses. One moved to my left, another to my right, and the rest flanked us from behind. The forest seemed to close in, shadows moving unnaturally. I clenched my fists, letting the silver energy spread through my veins. My wolf snarled, but I held her back. This time, I was in control. I focused on one rogue at a time, sending a controlled pulse of energy that sent it tumbling backward. Another approached, teeth bared, and I leapt aside, letting the silver light follow my movement, striking it squarely across the chest. Lucien moved like a shadow, striking with precision, his own wolf energy flaring. Together, we began to drive the rogues back. My confidence grew with every move, the fear I had felt in the clearing hours ago replaced with something sharper: determination. Then, a sudden movement caught my attention, a rogue that was faster, stronger, and smarter than the rest. It darted around the flanks, closing in from the shadows. My wolf growled, but this time, I let her instincts guide my actions. I concentrated, letting the silver energy focus into a sphere in my hand. The rogue lunged. I threw the sphere with precise aim. It struck the wolf in the chest, sending it sprawling into a tree. But the force wasn’t enough to stop it completely. It rose immediately, eyes blazing with fury, and charged again. I barely had time to react. My wolf surged forward, teeth bared, energy flaring. I felt the raw power coursing through me, and in a single motion, I pushed the rogue backward with a burst of silver light so strong it knocked it unconscious against a tree. The forest was silent again, except for our breathing. I sank to my knees, exhaustion hitting me like a tidal wave. My chest heaved as the warmth of power still lingered. Lucien approached, his amber eyes calm but intense. “You did well. That was your first true battle. But do not mistake victory for safety. More will come. They will not stop hunting you. Your power is a beacon.” I nodded, barely able to speak. “I… I never knew I could do that.” He placed a hand on my shoulder, firm but reassuring. “Power is not given. It is awakened. You have only scratched the surface of what you are capable of. But the world will test you. And soon, Kael Blackthorn will realize what he has lost.” The mention of Kael made my chest tighten. I wanted to hate him. I wanted revenge. But the anger now carried something new: focus. I was no longer a weak girl waiting for validation. I was a Luna Queen in the making, and nothing would stand in my way. The sun began to rise higher over the Pennsylvania pines, casting long golden beams through the frost-covered trees. Lucien and I made our way back to the cabin, silent, both of us aware that the forest had been changed by tonight’s events. My wolf was calmer now, still alert, but proud of the control we had exercised together. Inside the cabin, I collapsed against the wall, shivering from fatigue. Lucien brought me a bowl of steaming broth. “Eat,” he said simply. “You’ll need strength for what comes next.” I ate slowly, the warmth spreading through my body. My mind replayed the events of the night, the rogues, the energy, the silver light, the fear that had transformed into control. Each moment reminded me that I was no longer just Aria Nightshade, the rejected mate. I was something greater, something dangerous. After I finished eating, Lucien sat across from me. “Tomorrow,” he said, “we begin your second lesson. You need to understand your lineage, your heritage, and how to harness your full power. There are secrets in the bloodline that have been hidden for centuries, and they will guide you, if you can survive the trials to unlock them.” I nodded. “And the rogues? They’ll come back, won’t they?” Lucien’s expression was grim. “Yes. And not just rogues. Others who covet your power, wolves who claim to be Alphas, hunters who prey on the weak, even your own pack. Power like yours does not go unnoticed. You must be ready.” I leaned back against the wall, letting the exhaustion and adrenaline wash over me. My wolf curled against my side, a comforting presence in the aftermath of the night’s chaos. For the first time, I felt a bond that was truly mine, my wolf and I, united, ready to face whatever the world threw at us. The thought of Kael lingered in the back of my mind. I had imagined confronting him, proving myself, showing him the strength he had overlooked. But that desire was no longer simple longing. It had evolved into something more, an unyielding determination to rise, no matter what obstacles he or the world placed in my path. Night fell again over the Pennsylvania forest. The moon hung low, silver and cold, casting shadows that twisted like living creatures. I stepped outside the cabin, letting the chill bite through my skin. Lucien followed, his expression unreadable. “This forest,” he said quietly, “is a testing ground. You survived your first trial. But the next ones will be harder. You will face enemies who know your weaknesses, and some who will not hesitate to kill you. Are you ready?” I inhaled deeply, the icy air filling my lungs. My wolf stirred inside me, alert, fierce, and impatient. The silver warmth pulsed through my chest, stronger than ever. “I am ready,” I said, my voice firm. “I will survive. I will rise. And no one… not Kael, not rogues, not anyone… will ever underestimate me again.” Lucien studied me for a long moment, then nodded slowly. “Good. Remember this, Aria Nightshade. The path ahead is long and dangerous, but you are no longer alone. Your bloodline, your wolf, and your strength will guide you. And one day, every Alpha, every pack, will recognize the name of the last Luna Queen.” I lifted my head, staring at the moonlit forest. Somewhere in the shadows, the distant howl of wolves echoed, carrying warnings and secrets. I could feel them watching, testing, waiting. But I was no longer afraid. Because tonight had proven one undeniable truth: I was awakening. And when I rose fully… the world would tremble.
