CHAPTER 6: THE HIDDEN BOND
The Pennsylvania forest was still alive with whispers of the previous night. The frost had melted under the morning sun, leaving dew on every branch and leaf, sparkling like tiny crystals. I moved carefully along the narrow path that Lucien had chosen for my training. Each step was deliberate; my wolf guided me, her senses alert to every movement, every shift in the wind, every faint trace of life nearby.
Lucien walked beside me, his amber eyes scanning the trees, analyzing, calculating. He was silent, but the weight of his presence was reassuring. I had learned over the past two nights that his quiet was not indifference, it was focus, precision, and a control that I aspired to match.
“This morning,” he said finally, breaking the silence, “you will learn about the bond you share with your wolf. Your power is not just silver light, or strength, or speed. It is the connection between your human self and the wolf inside you. Understanding this bond will allow you to control your power fully, even in the heat of battle.”
I frowned. “But I thought the wolf was supposed to take over automatically when I’m threatened. Isn’t that how all wolves fight?”
Lucien shook his head slowly. “Instinct alone is not enough. Your wolf is strong, yes. But if you allow her to act unchecked, you risk harming yourself, or the wrong targets. You must learn to communicate with her, to guide her, to merge your will with hers.”
I swallowed hard. I had been so focused on survival, on controlling the silver light, that I hadn’t considered the wolf inside me as anything but a tool. But Lucien’s words made sense. Power without guidance was dangerous.
He stopped near a clearing where sunlight filtered through the trees, illuminating patches of moss and frost. “Sit,” he instructed. “Close your eyes. Reach inside yourself. Feel your wolf. Do not fight her. Do not control her. Listen.”
I hesitated, then obeyed. My wolf stirred immediately, cautious at first, then curious. I could feel her heartbeat echoing alongside mine, her senses overlapping with mine. The forest became sharper, more vivid. I could hear the rustle of a squirrel three trees over, the distant splash of a deer drinking from the creek, even the faint vibrations of a rabbit digging in the snow.
“Good,” Lucien murmured. “Now, communicate. Ask her what she senses. Ask her what she wants. Let her guide you.”
I focused, sending a thought inward. Tell me what you see.
The answer came not in words, but as a sensation, a tingling along my spine, a flicker of silver light along my vision. Images appeared: shadows moving between trees, a larger presence approaching, something fast and powerful. The forest was alive with predators I had never noticed before.
“They are watching,” I whispered.
Lucien’s eyes narrowed. “Yes. And soon, you will meet them. But for now, understand this: your wolf and you are one. Your senses, your instincts, your power, they all flow together. Trust her, and she will guide you. Resist her, and you will be torn apart.”
I nodded slowly. It was a strange, almost intimate experience, feeling a being that was part of me, yet separate, communicate through instinct and energy. I realized then that the silver light, the strength, the power that had erupted in the forest was not only mine, it was ours.
“Now,” Lucien said, “we test this bond.”
Before I could respond, a shadow shifted among the trees. My wolf growled low in my chest, alert and tense. I opened my eyes to see three figures emerging, a small rogue pack. Unlike the last group, these wolves moved with calculated precision, circling us slowly, eyes glinting with hunger.
“Your wolf senses them first,” Lucien said softly. “You will react second. Trust her instincts. Let her guide your actions.”
The first rogue lunged, and my wolf reacted instantly. Silver light burst from my chest, controlled and precise, knocking the wolf backward. My body moved instinctively, merging my will with hers. Another rogue advanced, teeth bared, and I felt the wolf’s anticipation pulse through me. I released a controlled blast of energy, sending the wolf tumbling.
Lucien moved beside me, swift and lethal, taking out a rogue that tried to flank us. The forest became a blur of motion, wolves, silver light, instincts guiding every step. I realized that I was no longer a mere human controlling a wolf; I was a single entity, united with the creature inside me, and together, we were a force of nature.
When the last rogue fled into the shadows, panting and beaten, I sank to my knees, exhausted but exhilarated. My wolf curled against my side, a silent acknowledgment of our unity.
Lucien studied me, a faint smile on his face. “You are progressing faster than I expected. That bond you share with your wolf, it is rare, even among the strongest of the old bloodlines.”
I leaned against a tree, still catching my breath. “It feels… amazing. Powerful. But I’ve never felt anything like this before. How will I ever control it in the heat of battle?”
“You will,” Lucien said. “Because power is meaningless without purpose. Control comes from clarity. From knowing who you are, what you want, and what you are willing to do to get it. And Aria… you have already begun to understand that.”
The praise sent a shiver through me, though not the warmth of comfort, it was sharp, like steel. My anger toward Kael, the sting of rejection, the humiliation in the Blackthorn mansion, they all fueled the clarity Lucien spoke of. I was no longer a girl seeking approval. I was a predator, a leader, and the last heir of a bloodline that demanded recognition.
We moved through the forest in silence after that, training, communicating, testing boundaries. Every step, every movement, felt sharper, more precise. My senses heightened, my wolf attuned to the subtle shifts of energy around us. I was learning, not just to survive, but to dominate, to harness my inheritance.
By the time the sun began to set, casting the Pennsylvania forest in shades of gold and amber, Lucien stopped near a small stream. “Tonight,” he said, “we begin the most important part of your training, awareness beyond your immediate senses. You will learn to feel threats before they arrive, to sense intentions, and to strike preemptively. This is the essence of a Luna Queen.”
I nodded, determination burning in my chest. “I’m ready.”
Lucien studied me for a moment, then nodded. “Good. But remember, power attracts attention. Kael knows you exist. He may think you are weak, but he will feel the truth soon enough. And when he does…” His gaze darkened. “He will come for you.”
The mention of Kael made my chest tighten. I hated him for the pain, the rejection, the arrogance. And yet… I felt a flicker of something else, a dangerous curiosity. Even from a distance, he had power, influence, and a hold on my past that I could not ignore. But I was no longer the same Aria Nightshade he had rejected. I was stronger, more dangerous, and capable of turning the tables in ways he could never anticipate.
Night fell over the Pennsylvania forest, and the first howl of distant wolves echoed across the hills. I felt the wolf stir beside me, alert and ready, sensing the unseen movements in the darkness. Lucien placed a hand lightly on my shoulder.
“Rest tonight,” he said. “Tomorrow, you will begin your first solo mission. You will venture into the heart of the forest alone, using your bond and your power to survive. This is not a test, it is reality. And Aria… the world outside this clearing will not be forgiving.”
I nodded, feeling both fear and excitement surge through me. The forest was alive, dangerous, and full of opportunity. I was no longer a girl running from rejection. I was awakening.
And somewhere, far off in the distance, I knew Kael was unaware that the last Luna Queen was rising, stronger, smarter, and far more dangerous than he could ever imagine.
I took a deep breath, feeling the cold night air fill my lungs. My
wolf stirred beside me, and together, we stared into the Pennsylvania darkness, waiting for whatever came next.
The hunt was beginning.
And I would not fail.
