A blur of motion startled me as the shot echoed through the room. The pain came like a lightening bolt. I heard my body fall to the ground, the thud vibrating through my skull. Chaos erupted around me, more bullets, so many bullets or maybe it was the echo of mine in my brain. I expected peace, that’s what they told you, that in death there was peace, and you would be free of the horrors of this world. It didn’t come. Slowly I opened my eyes. Fuller was on the ground the blood pooling around his body, Lyle above him hunched over with a gun. My eyelids were so heavy, but I fought to keep them open. Looking down my hands gripped my stomach, so tight but the blood oozed from the wound. I heard the steps of other people but only one person mattered. “Lyle.” I whispered trying to get up
