The Pack Revealed
The forest seemed to shift around them as they walked.
Rowan followed Kael through trees that looked familiar and strange at the same time. The path twisted in ways she did not recognize. The air grew cooler. The sounds of birds and insects faded until only the sound of their footsteps remained.
"Where are we going?" she asked again.
"Somewhere safe," Kael answered without looking back.
"How do I know I can trust you?"
He stopped walking and turned to face her.
"You do not know. But you came anyway. That means something."
Rowan frowned. "It means I want answers."
"Then keep walking."
They continued deeper into the forest. Rowan noticed that the trees were growing thicker. The sunlight barely reached the ground anymore. Strange markings were carved into some of the tree trunks. Symbols she had never seen before.
"What are those?"
"Border markers," Kael said. "They tell other wolves that this territory belongs to the Silver Ridge Pack."
Rowan stopped walking.
"Wolves?"
Kael turned to look at her. His amber eyes held hers.
"Yes. Wolves."
She shook her head. "That does not make sense. You are talking about-"
"I am talking about werewolves," he said calmly. "And you are one of us."
The words hung in the air like a storm waiting to break.
Rowan laughed. It came out shaky and wrong.
"That is crazy. Werewolves are not real. They are stories. Movies. Halloween costumes."
Kael did not argue. He simply stepped closer and held out his hand.
"Give me your hand."
"Why?"
"Just trust me."
Rowan hesitated. Then slowly, she reached out.
Kael took her hand gently. His palm was warm against hers. He turned it over so her wrist was exposed.
"Watch," he said.
His eyes changed. They shifted from amber to bright gold. His grip tightened slightly, not enough to hurt, but enough to hold her still. Then his fingers began to change. Claws extended from his fingertips, sharp and dark. His skin rippled with something that looked like fur beneath the surface.
Rowan tried to pull away. He held on.
"Look at me," he said softly.
She forced herself to meet his eyes.
"I am not lying to you, Rowan. This is who I am. This is who you are."
He released her hand. The claws retracted. His eyes faded back to amber.
Rowan stumbled backward. Her heart pounded so hard she could hear it in her ears.
"How did you do that?"
"I shifted," he said. "Just a little. Enough to show you the truth."
She shook her head again. Her mind was spinning. Nothing made sense. Wolves. Claws. Shifting. It sounded like something from a nightmare.
Kael watched her with patient eyes.
"I know it is a lot to take in. But we do not have much time. There are people who want to hurt you. People who have been looking for you since you were a baby."
Rowan's hand moved to her jacket pocket. The photograph was still there.
"Who are they?"
"I will tell you everything," Kael promised. "But first, we need to get you inside the territory. Once we cross the border, you will be protected."
Rowan looked at the tree line. The markings seemed to glow faintly in the dim light.
"What happens if I say no?"
Kael's expression tightened.
"Then you walk back to town alone. And I cannot protect you."
Something in his voice made her believe him. He was not threatening her. He was warning her.
She took a breath.
"Okay. Show me."
They walked for another ten minutes before the trees opened into a clearing.
Rowan stopped and stared.
A massive estate stood before her. It was built from dark stone and timber, with tall windows that caught the fading sunlight. Towers rose on either side, and a wide courtyard stretched in front of the main entrance. Wolves moved freely across the grounds. Some walked on two legs. Others ran on four.
It was like stepping into another world.
"This is Silver Ridge," Kael said. "My pack's home."
Rowan could not find words. She just stood there, taking it all in.
People were watching her now. Warriors in dark clothing stood near the gates. A tall man with short brown hair and serious eyes walked toward them.
"Kael," the man said. "She is here."
"Yes, Marcus. This is Rowan Carter."
Marcus studied her carefully.
"She looks just like her mother."
Rowan's breath caught.
"You knew my mother?"
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Everyone in this territory knew your mother, Rowan. She was the Luna of the Redwood Crown Pack. The most powerful pack in California."
"Was?"
Marcus exchanged a look with Kael.
"We will explain everything inside. Come."
They led her through the main doors into a grand hall. The ceiling was high and carved with images of wolves running beneath the moon. A fire crackled in a massive stone fireplace.
Rowan felt small in the middle of it all.
An older woman with silver-streaked hair and kind eyes approached her. Her presence was warm and calming.
"Rowan," she said softly. "I am Iris. Kael's mother."
She reached out and took Rowan's hands.
"I have waited twenty years to meet you."
Rowan's throat tightened.
"I do not understand any of this."
Iris smiled gently.
"I know, dear. And I am sorry. But you are safe now. That is all that matters."
Rowan looked around the hall. At the wolves watching her. At the fire. At the photograph still tucked in her pocket.
She had wanted answers her whole life.
Now she was finally getting them.
And she was terrified of what she might learn.
