The First Missing Truth

1287 Words
Amelie could not remember how she had made it home. Her mind was still trapped inside the Grand Imperial Hotel, replaying every painful moment with relentless clarity while the city passed unnoticed around her. When she finally entered her apartment and locked the door behind her, the silence felt almost suffocating because it forced her to confront a reality she could no longer escape. Only a few hours earlier, she had been a woman planning the happiest day of her life, discussing wedding flowers, guest lists, seating arrangements, and honeymoon destinations. Now she stood alone in the middle of a dark living room, wondering how much of her future had been built on lies. The image of Lukas standing beside Clara refused to leave her mind. No matter how desperately she tried to push it away, it always returned. Eventually, the betrayal felt less like a memory and more like a wound that reopened every time she closed her eyes. Her phone screen remained lit with missed calls and unread messages, and every notification reminded her that everyone else still believed her life was exactly the same as it had been that morning. Her mother had called three times. Two bridesmaids had left voice messages. Several wedding vendors were waiting for decisions regarding preparations that suddenly felt meaningless. Amelie stared at the glowing screen without opening a single message because she barely understood what had happened herself, and the thought of explaining it to others felt unbearable. Every unanswered call reminded her that somewhere beyond the walls of her apartment, people were still planning a wedding that would never take place. Every unread message reminded her that the future everyone believed in had collapsed within a single evening. The contrast was almost impossible to endure. While the world continued as though nothing had changed, everything she had believed in had already fallen apart. Eventually she sank onto the sofa, exhausted, but the stillness brought no relief. The moment she stopped moving, her memories came alive with painful clarity. She remembered introducing Lukas to her family and how warmly they had welcomed him, convinced they were embracing the man who would one day become part of their family. She remembered Clara standing beside her throughout the wedding preparations, laughing with her and helping her make decisions while secretly hiding something capable of destroying everything. She remembered evenings spent talking excitedly about the future, completely convinced she was surrounded by people who loved her and wanted the best for her. Looking back, every memory felt altered, as if someone had quietly rewritten the past while she had been too happy to notice. That realization hurt more than the affair itself because it transformed months of genuine happiness into something she could no longer trust. Eventually the tears came. Just as suddenly, they disappeared again, leaving behind a heavy numbness. Yet even in that state, one detail refused to leave her alone. The stranger's words at the hotel echoed persistently inside her mind. "Ask him what happened to the money." At the time, she had been too shocked to understand what those words meant. Now they seemed impossible to ignore because they pointed toward something the photographs could not explain. The affair explained Clara. It explained Lukas's growing distance. It even explained the humiliation she felt whenever she remembered the confrontation. What it did not explain was the money. And the fact that a complete stranger considered the subject important enough to mention suggested that beneath everything she had already uncovered, another layer of betrayal was waiting to be exposed. Driven by a mixture of curiosity and growing unease, Amelie unlocked her phone and opened the banking application connected to the wedding account she and Lukas had spent months building together. She expected reassurance. She expected familiar numbers that would prove not every part of her life had been touched by the disaster unfolding around her. Instead, the moment the account page loaded, an icy chill spread through her chest. The balance was significantly lower than she remembered. At first she convinced herself she must be mistaken. The emotional chaos of the day could easily lead to errors. But when she refreshed the page and saw the same figure staring back at her, denial began giving way to concern. Her breathing slowed as she examined the details more carefully. That was when she noticed a restriction notice on the account. It should not have been there. "No," she whispered. She refreshed the page again despite already knowing nothing would change. She tried accessing the transaction history, but several entries remained unavailable no matter what she did. Even after logging in repeatedly, the same restrictions remained in place. Panic slowly spread through her chest. This no longer felt like a technical issue or a temporary system problem. The restrictions seemed too deliberate. Too intentional. The longer she stared at them, the harder it became to ignore the possibility that someone had deliberately hidden information from her. The thought alone made her stomach tighten because only one other person besides herself had access to that account. And she now knew that person had been lying to her for months. Refusing to accept what she was seeing, Amelie opened another account connected to an investment portfolio she and Lukas had created for their future together. She hoped the wedding account was an isolated issue. It was not. What she found there was even worse. Several large transfers appeared in the records, and every single one had been authorized directly by Lukas. Her pulse accelerated as she studied the details more closely and realized the transactions stretched across weeks and even months while she had been busy planning a wedding Lukas might never have intended to go through with. The deeper she dug into the records, the more disturbing the pattern became. These were not accidental mistakes. They were not random financial movements. They were deliberate actions carried out over a long period of time and hidden behind the trust she had given him without hesitation. As the truth slowly took shape, Amelie felt genuine fear for the first time that evening. The discovery triggered a memory she had not thought about for months. During a family dinner, her father had raised his glass and smiled proudly at Lukas while discussing future business plans. His confidence had been unmistakable when he said, "You know, I trust this young man as if he were my own son." At the time, those words had made her happy because they meant the two most important men in her life respected each other. Now the memory returned carrying an entirely different meaning. Fear. If Lukas had access to more than just her personal finances, then the consequences of his betrayal could extend far beyond a broken engagement. The possibility terrified her enough that she immediately reached for her phone. Without giving herself time to reconsider, she called her father and listened to the ringing tone echo through the silent apartment. When he finally answered, the familiar warmth in his voice was still there, the same warmth that had always comforted her during difficult moments. Tonight, however, even that comfort felt distant because too many questions demanded answers. "Amelie, your mother is worried about you," he said gently. "Are you okay?" She closed her eyes briefly. There was no easy way to begin this conversation. "I need to ask you something," she said. The seriousness in her voice immediately caught his attention. His concern became more obvious. "What happened?" For a few seconds she considered softening the question. But fear pushed her forward. "Did Lukas have access to the company accounts?" "Did Lukas have access to the company accounts?"
