Seraphina held my alarmed gaze with a rather serious one, her eyebrows creased together.
“Why is your expression so serious?” I asked, finally sitting up on my bed.
She said nothing and just stared at me without blinking an eye.
“What is Seraphina? You're beginning to scare me.”
“You don't love Kael more than you love me, right?”
Relief and disbelief washed over me after she dropped her question. I stared at her wide mouthed, unable to say a word. For some minutes I thought I was in trouble or maybe something bad had happened.
“Why are you staring at me like that?”
And she still held the expression on her face.
“You're kidding, right?”
“No I'm not kidding. I asked you a question and I need a very honest reply.”
I could no longer hold it in as I burst into fits of laughter. I laughed so hard my stomach began to hurt.
“My best friend is jealous of my mate.”
“I'm being serious Lyra, you're not allowed to love anyone more than you love me.”
I burst into another fit of laughter as I stared at her. It took a while for me to get over the joke and quiet down.
“Now you know how exactly I felt all the time you dumped me for Oliver."
“You barely have time for me, you could as well just start living with him.”
“Goodness Seraphina, he's my mate, I'm expected to feel that way. You know exactly how this feels.”
She pouted her lips a bit as if she was whining, before bursting into laughter. I joined her in her fits of laughter, and soon we grew tired.
“Kael and I finally did it.”
“Say what now??”
“Kael and I had s*x, Seraphina.”
She hastingly made her way towards me, collapsing beside me on the bed.
“Tell me about it.”
“Eww, no!”
She might be my best friend, but I didn't feel comfortable talking about my s*x life. It would totally be awkward.
“I don't get details?”
“Nope, no, never.”
“Why are you being wicked? You can't just leave me hanging.”
“I can and I will. That's all you get.”
Seraphina spent a good amount of time trying to persuade me to give her details. It didn't seem fair that I was holding out on her since we always shared. More accurately, she always told me about her… escapades.
“Why do you look so sullen?” Seraphina asked me as she pushed a spoonful of her dinner into her mouth.
8 hours, it's been exactly twelve hours since Kael and I had s*x, and I haven't heard a word from him. Normally, we texted almost every minute of every hour, but now, he was completely silent, not replying to my texts or calls.
“I'm worried about Kael.”
“Why, what happened?” She asked, dropping her cutlery to give me her full attention.
“He has not texted or called me at all since we had s*x, and neither is he responding to my calls or texts.”
“Since last night?”
“Yeah. Or did I perhaps rush things. Do you think he now degrades me because I easily gave in to him just weeks after we met?”
Every single fiber in me was trying to deny it, but I was panicking.
“Don't you dare say that again. You're not cheap and you didn't rush things. For f**k sake, he's your mate, the one destined for you. Maybe he's just busy, I'm sure he'll get back to you as soon as he can.”
I nodded my head, repeating her words in my head to console myself. Just as I was about to pick up my spoon, the notification sound of my phone had me bolting for it.
Finally!
Instantly, the frown on my face got replaced by a relieved smile.
“I'm guessing he has texted you.”
I only nodded my head, responding to Kael's text. The i***t came home and didn't know where he kept his phone, he had been looking for it since then.
“What was his reason for not reaching out to you?” Seraphina asked, finally able to resume eating her food, but I was too caught up in my texting to give her a reply.
“Lyra!”
“Yeah, sorry. Said he lost his phone, he just found it.”
She went back to her food while I resumed texting Kael. That night, I went to sleep grinning like a total fool, not thinking about the stupid excuse he gave me for not responding to my calls or texts.
The evening cool breeze kissed my fur gently as I ran with excitement through the forest. Going on a run with Kael had now become one of my favorite things to do. Who would have thought finding my own mate was all it took for me to feel totally complete.
“You're becoming slow.” I said to him as I turned my head to watch him run behind me.
“Oh no baby, I'm not slow. I'm just letting you enjoy the victory of being faster than me.” Pride was evident in his voice as he spoke. To be honest, he was faster than I was.
“Lies. You're just ashamed that a female is faster than you can ever be.”
To prove me wrong, he increased his pace, and before I could think of what to do, he jumped over my head, blocking my path.
“What were you saying?”
I rolled my eyes.
“Now someone is being a sore loser because she's a slow poke. The truth does indeed hurt.” He said, throwing me a teasing gaze.
“Why should I be? I'm way better than you regardless.”
He bursted out laughing and I joined him, just living in the moment. Oh how I wished to remain wrapped in his arms forever.
“Luna Lyra, sounds cool right?” I asked as we laid in each other's arms.
“Luna?”
“Yeah, Luna. If you completely claim me, when you ascend the throne as alpha I'll be your Luna, and we'll lead the pack together. I can't wait.” Excitement coloured the tone of my voice as I played the scenario in my head.
“Woah, woah, we'll take it one at a time.”
“I can't just help but dream about life by your side. How many pups are we gonna have?”
“Lyra… why don't you wait till my father gets to know you before we make all these plans.” His tone was coming out a bit off, but I was too caught up in my dream world to notice it.
“Nope, allow me to make plans. A girl is allowed to dream, right?”
“Yeah…..dreams.”
“Maybe three girls and two boys. Don't you agree?”
He was quiet.
“Kael?” I called for him, but I didn't get a reply. I was laying on his chest, so it made his face move out of my line of sight.
As I stood up to look at his face, my blood totally ran cold. Two arrows were buried deep in his neck, suffocating the little air that was in his lungs.
The whole world suddenly became unstable as I began to lose focus. I was too shaken by panic to make a move, watching as he struggled for his life.
My eyeballs rolled frantically in my head as I searched around for the impending danger. I didn't need to search for too long when I heard the rusting of leaves.
From behind a tree, the person stepped out. I tried to identify who the person was, as she was trying to hide in the shadows, but her silver hair gave her away.
