“Com'on Seraphina, you're too slow.” I said to my best friend through the mind link as we raced to the forest in our wolf form. We weren't having the exact perfect day, so I suggested we took a run.
“I’m holding back for your sake.” She said, huffing in reply. I laughed as I raced faster, letting the forest breeze kiss my brown fur.
“Meet you in front, you slowpoke.” I said, before accelerating again.
Running in my wolf form became one of my favorite things to do since the day I could change into my wolf form. Running with no fear, feeling the earth between my paws, nothing beats the feeling.
We raced for a few more minutes until we came across a river. There we stopped to just rest and enjoy the view.
“Feel better?” I asked her as we changed into our human forms.
“The best I've ever felt.”
“Told ya.”
“Lyra, guess what.” She said with a sudden glint in her eyes while we sat near the river bank. That glint in her eyes only stated one thing: gist!
“What is the latest?” I asked with a matching vibrance, my ears perking up to hear the gist.
“Our alpha’s heir is back”
“Back? Where’d he go?”
“Apparently, he mouthed off to his father and got banished for a while.”
I was quiet for a few seconds, letting the story sink into my soul, before I regained the mind to say a word.
“That’s sad.” I said. “I don’t know how I’d feel if my father banished me from our pack.”
“Don’t sweat it. Kael’s a nitwit anyway, he deserves whatever he gets.
If Seraphina said he deserved it, then he did. “So when will he arrive?”
“No one knows, we just know he's coming.”
“Hmm, I wonder the kind of person he is.”
“I just told you. Weren’t you listening?” Seraphina asked me, her brows creased in surprise.
“I did, but he might have changed. Being banished like that could do a lot to a person. Who knows he might just come back a better person than when he left.”
Ever the cynic, Seraphina said. “Let’s hope you're right. I mean if-”
Her words suddenly cut off as she started grinning like a fool. Instantly, I knew it was Oliver mind linking her. I felt a pang of jealousy in my chest as I stared at Seraphina.
“Oliver…”
She spoke to me after a few minutes of being silent. I didn't let her finish whatever she was saying as I knew what was about to fall off her mouth.
“I know, let's go.”
We made our way back to the pack, stopping a bit away from the pack to get dressed. Seraphina left me afterwards to meet her soul mate, while I became a lonely wanderer.
Living the life of an orphan wasn't an easy one, but I was already used to the fact that my parents had kissed the earth goodbye, and I had no relatives left. None who wanted me anyway.
Seraphina took me like a sister, even let me live with her. She was my best friend, the only friend I had.
Unlike me, Seraphina had every werewolf in Silverwood sniffing after her. It was amusing to watch, really, seeing as she was always ‘in love’ with a new werewolf every week. And the craziest part was that she actually believed she would end up with each of them, when we both knew who she really loved.
Once or twice, I’d seen him look back at her, I’d seen the longing in his eyes. But they were so far apart in rank, the chances of their ending up together was slim. I didn’t want to give her any hopes.
As for me, no one looked at me. I kept my head low, of course, and Silverwood was a safe haven for all werewolves. So no one paid me any mind.
I'm cursed.
The thought was always there in my head.
“Lovely day Lyra, isn't it?”
Well, no one paid me any mind, except Bruce.
I turned to him with a smile. “Hi, Bruce.”
“Have you given any thoughts to my proposal?”
I rolled my eyes. “You mean your proposition. Look Bruce, I've told you times without numbers that nothing can happen between us. We aren't mates and are not destined for each other.”
“But my heart longs for you.”
“No Bruce, we both know what part of you longs for me, and it’s not your heart. ” I said with a knowing look.
“What difference does it make?”
“Get lost.” I said with irritation before walking off.
Bruce was another wolf in the pack who was also yet to find his own mate, he kept on going after anything that wore a skirt, mated or not.
I spent exactly four hours tossing and turning in my bed, wandering aimlessly around the house, daydreaming of the day I finally met my own mate, before I heard a knock on the door.
“Oh Great! She finally returns.”
My tone dropped with sarcasm as I opened the door to see Seraphina finally back. I wasn't jealous of her, but I was bored out of my mind.
“Don't be a sour fruit, I'm sure you'll get to meet your own prince charming.”
“Yeah, whatever.”
“Maybe you'd meet him where we are going tonight.”
I paused in my tracks, my head turning slowly towards her direction.
“Where are we going?”
“Oliver asked me to invite you to the grand opening of this club.”
“A club?....not my type of place.” I said, refusing immediately.
“Com'on Lyra, just this one time.”
“You know how much I hate loud music and a lot of crowd, plus you'll have Oliver and I'll be alone.”
“You're a stunning young woman Lyra, guys would turn their head at your presence.”
“There goes the flattering.”
“ You know how true my words are.”
“Fine, just this once.”
Seraphina hugged me in happiness, before pulling me towards the kitchen.
“Are you sure this is not too short?” The discomfort and uncertainty was evident I'm my voice as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. We were already dressed for this ‘grand opening’, but I was skeptical about my dress.
“No, it's perfect. Just showing the right amount of flesh and accentuating your sexy shape. I'm in love with the dress!”
“I'll just change out of it.” I said, attempting to pull it off, but she stopped me and started pushing me towards the door.
“No, not while I'm here.”
We headed out and of course Oliver was the one who picked us up. The drive to the club was about 15 minutes, 15 minutes of watching the flirting between Oliver and Seraphina.
As soon as we got into the club, they left me alone as expected. I could do nothing but drown myself in the comforting embrace of alcohol.
I sat, sipping my drink, trying to ignore the headache that was taking root in my brain when a particular scent wafted through my nostrils. The scent was a mixture of cedar wood and lemon, and it was so strong that I could no longer ignore it.
I stood up from where I sat, following the direction of where the scent came from. I didn't need to make a long journey before my eyes met piercing forest green eyes.
My wolf leaped inside me.
