I didn't know how long we stood staring at each other, but I knew it was long enough for me to notice every single little detail about his physical appearance.
His hair was a deep blonde, smooth and shining with newly applied gel. His lips were the perfect shade of red, which all but made me want to pull him towards myself and crash my lips on his.
His pointed nose beautified his perfectly sculptured head. He was about 6 feet tall with a moderately built body. And damn me if I forget the color of his eyes; forest green eyes with flecks of gold.
How can a man be this perfect?
Just like me, I could tell he was feeling the pull of the mate bond, and was just as awestruck as I was. Okay, maybe not as much as I was. The wolf in me jumped about, wagging its tail in the presence of her mate.
Finally!
“Uhm, this is awkward.”
The moment I heard his voice, I knew I could spend the rest of my life listening to his voice if it was the only sound.
“I…uhm…we…”
Since when did I become a stammerer!
Seeing how speechless I was, he stretched his hand forward, grabbing a hold of mine as he led us somewhere I didn't give a damn to know as long as his hand stayed on mine. The instant purr from my inner wolf as the skin to skin contact left me fulfilled.
“All my life I've dreamt of this moment, but now that I'm living it, I've suddenly become speechless.”
My brain could finally function and the words left my mouth immediately we got to a private space in the club.
“It's cool, I know exactly how you feel… wow, you're so beautiful, and you look absolutely stunning in that dress.” My cheeks became a shade of pink in a matter of seconds as I stared shyly at my toes.
“Thank you.”
“Kael. My name is Kael.”
“Lyra. It's nice to finally meet you.”
Kael and I sat together, talking and getting to know each other better. We talked like we had known each other for a very long time, and I wanted nothing more than to remain in his presence.
“You're Alpha Axel's son?.... Like the one who… left?”
He laughed. “That’s one way of putting it.”
Wow! Wow again!
“Trust me, he kept it really discreet. Who would have thought the son of an alpha would be my mate, and not just any alpha, but the alpha of my very own pack.”
“It's exciting, isn't it?”
We talked some more, and before I knew it Seraphina started ringing me up. I silenced my phone without the notice of Kael and just continued talking with him. Yes, it was how much I wanted to be in his presence.
“I have to get home, I'll text you.” He said as he stood up and placed a light kiss on my cheeks.
He kissed me!!
I nodded my head slowly without uttering a word as I watched him walk out of my sight.
Is this how hypnotic love is, or is the mate bond just heightening it?
Oh, the heavens bless Seraphina for dragging me along with her, and for making me wear this dress.
I spent a few more minutes recalling the moments of the past hour with an absolute wide grin on my face.
“Where in the moon goddess's sake have you been?” Seraphina asked me as soon as I pushed open the door into the house.
She had a worried look on her face, and I should have felt guilty for ignoring all her calls and keeping her worried, but I was too caught up in my feelings to care about all that.
“Why is your smile so wide?”
“You won't believe it if I told you.”
“Did you meet the alpha and he asked you to come live with him in his house for free money?”
Where did this girl get her brains from?
“Stop looking at me like that, I'm only saying what you would say that I might not believe.” She said in defense, noticing the weird look I was giving her.
“You sure do think weirdly.”
“So what is it?”
The smile and blush returned to my face as soon as she brought us back on track.
“I met my mate.”
The bed dipped as I released my weight on it. The room was silent, and I had to open my closed eyes to be sure I wasn't talking to myself.
“What!!???”
I could swear that the intensity of her voice almost destroyed my eardrums.
“Oh my God! I'm so f*****g happy right now.”
“Ouch!” I screamed in pain as she landed her body in mine, pulling me into a hug.
“How? Where? When?”
I could finally breathe properly after she had released me from her bone crushing hug.
“It happened just like you said it.”
“At the club?”
“Yeah. And that's not even the juicy part of it.”
“Why are you keeping me in so much suspense?” She whined, shaking me vigorously.
“My mate is the Alpha's son.”
“Say what now?.....oh my…. Like the lost son we were expecting?”
“Yup, that's the one.”
I spent the rest of the night talking about Kael, and I never got tired. I didn't need the intervention of sorcery to tell me that I had fallen in love, too deeply.
Hours turned into days, and days turned into weeks, and Kael and I were completely in love, caught up in each other's world.
We usually met in my house or in the forest when we decided to take a run,but each time I suggested we meet at his house, he was quick to refuse it.
Too blinded by love, I saw this as nothing and believed in his lies.
‘I don't want my father to know I have a mate yet, I want to surprise him on the day I will be crowned as the new alpha.’
Those were the words he told me, and I decided to let it go after three failed attempts of trying to persuade him. And today, I was going to our favorite starting line for another fun race.
“Baby.”
I called, running into his open arms. Pulling away, I kissed him.
“Took you long enough.” He said before placing a light kiss on my nose.
“You ready?”
With just a single nod, we let our wolves take charge as we raced on. We ran freely, letting the cool breeze sink into our skin. No argument, he was a faster runner, and soon we came to the end of our race.
“Kael, can I ask you a question?”
We sat on the green grass, wrapped in each other's warmth when I asked that question.
“Sure darling, anything.”
“What would you do assuming your father doesn't accept me?”
10 seconds, for 10 seconds he was quiet as he thought of a reply.
“I don't know.”
“Why don't you know? I'm your mate, and we are destined for each other. You can't tell me you haven't thought of a situation like this.”
“But you know not every wolf ended up with their mates.”
The rate of my heartbeat accelerated as the words fell from his mouth.
What is he implying?
“What do you mean?”
I asked in irritation as I got off his body. He raised his hand up in defeat before giving me an answer.
“I'm just saying I'd have to make a decision that would be in the best interests of this pack.”
One part of me read in between the lines, but the other part of me that saw his selfless nature and saw him as a selfless man who thought about his pack before his own happiness overshadowed it, and in that moment, I deserved the ‘fool of the century award.’
Just as we were about to get back to our cuddling, the vigorous rustling of leaves echoed through the silent forest.
